NFL owners prepare another Roger Goodell extension, Green Bay signs Devonte Wyatt, Tampa Bay resumes Baker Mayfield negotiations and more.

NFL owners are expected to finalize another contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell as the league prepares for major negotiations involving its schedule, labor agreement and broadcast rights.

Elsewhere, the Packers secured Devonte Wyatt through 2029, the Buccaneers are preparing to resume contract talks with Baker Mayfield, and the defending champion Seahawks opened training camp with several players on the physically unable to perform list.

It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for July 21, 2026!

NFL Owners Expected to Extend Roger Goodell

Goodell’s current contract expires in March 2027, but league owners reportedly expect to complete another extension within the next several months. There is no known opposition to retaining the commissioner, who will mark 20 years in the position in September.

A new agreement would keep Goodell in control as the NFL prepares for another collective bargaining negotiation and considers reopening its lucrative media contracts. The current CBA runs through the 2030 season, with an 18-game regular season expected to become one of the central issues during future talks.

The extension could be discussed during the August 26 owners’ meeting in Atlanta, when the record-setting sale of the Seattle Seahawks is also expected to receive formal approval.

ESPN Parts Ways With Ryan Clark

ESPN laid off longtime NFL analyst Ryan Clark on Monday, ending his 11-year run with the network.

Clark reportedly learned of the decision while appearing on a live episode of NFL Live. His departure is expected to be part of a larger round of ESPN and NFL Network staffing cuts following ESPN’s acquisition of NFL Network.

The former Steelers safety became one of ESPN’s most visible NFL personalities through appearances on NFL Live, First Take, Get Up and Monday Night Countdown. He also won a Sports Emmy during his tenure.

The timing is particularly notable because ESPN is preparing for an expanded NFL role that includes its first Super Bowl broadcast. Clark had appeared positioned to be a prominent part of that coverage before the network abruptly ended the relationship.

Packers Sign Devonte Wyatt to $57 Million Extension

Green Bay agreed to a three-year, $57 million extension with Wyatt that includes a $20 million signing bonus. The agreement keeps the former first-round defensive tackle under contract through the 2029 season.

Wyatt produced four sacks and 27 tackles in 10 games last season before fibula and ankle injuries ended his year. He had been scheduled to play the 2026 season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract.

The Packers are betting that Wyatt’s pass-rushing production will become more consistent if he remains healthy. He joins Micah Parsons, Javon Hargrave and Edgerrin Cooper as an important part of a Green Bay defense expected to carry championship expectations.

Buccaneers Preparing to Resume Baker Mayfield Negotiations

Tampa Bay is reportedly preparing another attempt to complete an extension with Mayfield before training camp begins.

The Buccaneers’ initial offer was not close to Mayfield’s asking price, and the quarterback previously indicated that he did not want negotiations continuing once camp opened. Both sides remain interested in completing a deal, but they have limited time to close the financial gap.

Mayfield is entering the final season of the three-year, $100 million agreement he signed after revitalizing his career in Tampa Bay. A potential new contract could approach three years and $165 million, although that figure remains a projection rather than an agreed price.

Mayfield’s injuries and Tampa Bay’s late-season collapse complicate the discussion. The Buccaneers must decide whether his toughness and three years of stability outweigh the risk of committing top-level quarterback money to a player entering his age-31 season.

Seahawks Place Three Players on PUP List

Seattle placed safety Nick Emmanwori, running back Kenny McIntosh and cornerback Tyrone Broden on the active/PUP list as the defending champions began training-camp preparations.

Emmanwori injured his ankle before the Super Bowl but played in the championship game and participated in offseason work. McIntosh continues recovering from the torn ACL that ended his 2025 season.

Players placed on the active/PUP list can return at any point during training camp once medically cleared. The designation does not require them to miss regular-season games unless they remain on the list when rosters are finalized.

Emmanwori’s status will receive the most attention because of his importance to Seattle’s secondary. The Seahawks do not need to rush him in July, but they will want him fully involved well before beginning their championship defense.

Jordan Whitehead Cleared to Resume Career

Veteran safety Jordan Whitehead has been fully cleared following neck surgery and recently worked out for the Colts and Texans.

Whitehead has not played since suffering a fractured neck in a January 2025 automobile accident. He has started 101 of his 105 NFL appearances and was a member of Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl LV championship team.

The 29-year-old would likely compete for a reserve position rather than immediately receive a starting job. His experience should nevertheless create additional interest once teams begin practicing and evaluating their secondary depth.

NFL Transactions — July 20, 2026

  • Green Bay Packers signed defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt to a three-year, $57 million extension
  • New England Patriots signed defensive tackle Isaiah Iton
  • Seattle Seahawks placed safety Nick Emmanwori on the active/PUP list
  • Seattle Seahawks placed running back Kenny McIntosh on the active/PUP list
  • Seattle Seahawks placed cornerback Tyrone Broden on the active/PUP list

Goodell’s expected extension is less about maintaining the current league structure than controlling what comes next. The NFL is approaching another fight over the length of its season, player compensation and the value of media rights, and owners clearly prefer continuity during those negotiations.

Wyatt and Mayfield represent opposite stages of the extension process. Green Bay removed uncertainty before camp, while Tampa Bay risks allowing its starting quarterback to enter the season with his future becoming a weekly storyline.

Seattle’s injury designations are not yet reasons for panic. The active/PUP list is designed to give teams flexibility during camp, but Emmanwori’s progress will still be closely watched because repeating as champion becomes considerably harder when important players begin the season behind schedule.
