John Cena reportedly mentored Austin Theory in the build-up to their WrestleMania 39 United States Title match, working out and dining together while urging the younger star to be himself rather than an over-the-top heel. Theory, who grew up idolizing Cena, said Cena even spoke to Vince McMahon after the match to argue that Theory “wasn’t a bad guy” and should be positioned as a face moving forward, though Theory ultimately stayed a heel.

In an interview with Logan Paul, Theory recalled Cena calling spots in the ring — including a planned Evander Holyfield-style ear bite — and offering a key piece of advice: treat every show like a live event, even the biggest one. Despite Cena’s guidance and public support, Theory continued his heel run as a singles competitor, later forming a tag team with Grayson Waller before joining The Vision.
