ROH Pure Championship: Lee Moriarty VS Angelico!
#TAIGASTYLE has dominated the division for the better part of two YEARS, going to other countries and defending against rising stars, icons, and legends. One challenger has stood out, and that is the South African Stud who came the closest anyone has to ending the historic run. Angelico gets a second chance, can he make good on it? Or will Lee Moriarty still be the top of the food chain?
The introductions are made, the belt is raised, and we see who is truly Pure!
The Code of Honor is upheld, but then turned into a wristlock by Angelico! The bell rings, Lee wrenches and hammerlocks. Angelico spins Lee, spins through, and has both a behind-the-back wristlock, but he also pulls on Lee’s beard! Lee breaks free, spins through, and wrenches to then reel Angelico in. Angelico fights the Cobra Twist, breaks the wristlock, and the fans cheer. The two circle, the fans rally up, and the two tie up again. Angelico wrenches to hammerlock, but Lee squats, squats, then uses the British Escape. Lee switches the hammerlock onto Angelico, but Angelico drops, rolls, rolls, and slips around to a full nelson.
Lee powers up but Angelico holds on. Angelico then brings the arm over, and he adds a top wristlock to the full nelson! Lee uses his leg for leverage and breaks free. Lee then spins Angelico to a cravat, and the fans applaud the technical exchange. Angelico endures, drops down to roll, but Lee rolls it back to stand back up. Angelico hooks a leg with a leg to trip Lee, and he has the top wristlock. Lee headscissors but Angelico fights free. Lee stands, Angelico hammerlocks, but Lee spins and spins and trips Angelico to then float and facelock. Angelico rolls to facelock, then wrench and wristlock, and the fans applaud again.
Lee rolls, but Angelico wrangles Lee with another top wristlock. Lee kips up, hooks a leg, but Angelico wrenches to wristlock back. Lee spins, slips through, wrenches and wrangles Angelico. The fans cheer while Lee flexes. Angelico fights up, spins and opens the wristlock to use a sprinkler kick to break the grip. Angelico has the wristlock, but Lee jumps, jumps and rolls, handsprings, then slips through to wrench and wristlock again. Lee kneels on Angelico while he flexes, and the fans applaud. Angelico fights up, spins again, another slip through and spin to then arm-drag! Lee handsprings through, but Angelico sweeps the leg! ONE, Lee sweeps, ONE!
Angelico spins and does the Bernie Lean and the fans applaud. Lee stays cool and resets with Angelico. The fans rally, and Angelico literally takes the gloves off. The two feel things out, knuckle lock, but Angelico pushes Lee so he can reel him in and slip through, straitjacket straight arm lever combo! Lee endures, powers up, but Angelico spins him to a half nelson hammerlock combo! Lee hooks a leg but Angelico steps over and cravats. Angelico snapmares, then pulls the arms for the motorcycle stretch! Lee tells the ref to leave him alone, stop asking if he quits! Angelico then rolls and jackknife bridges with the stretch!
The fans rally as Lee endures, but Angelico lets go to go for a leg! Roll into the CALF KILLER ANKLE LOCK SPLADLE! Lee scrambles to a ROPEBREAK, just his first, at six minutes deep. The fans cheer while Angelico backs away. The two reset, knuckle lock, and the two go shoulder to shoulder in a Test of Strength. Lee makes Angelico bridge, but Angelico powers back up to his feet! Angelico makes Lee bridge, but Lee kips up! Lee rolls, breaks a grip, wrenches the other, then steps over to flip and arm-drag! The fans cheer, Angelico comes back, and Lee trips Angelico to float and cover, TWO! But into the BORDER CITY STRETCH!
The fans rally as Angelico fights forward, and makes the ROPEBREAK! Lee makes a point of how they’re even as we hit seven minutes. The two reset, circle, and Angelico trips Lee. Angelico ties up the legs, then rolls, INDIAN DEATHLOCK! Lee’s shoulders are down, ONE as he sits up. Lee rolls, hooks an arm, and frees himself as he clamps on. Lee wrenches, hammerlocks, steps through to hook a leg, but Angelico chinbars. Lee wrenches that arm, but Angelico tries to waistlock. Lee wrenches again, wrangles Angelico, then traps that arm. Lee grabs the other arm, bends the fingers, but Angelico kicks his way to the ROPEBREAK!
Lee lets go, and he points out that’s the second. Angelico is now at the disadvantage and we’ve only passed eight minutes. The two circle, feel things out, and Angelico shoots in. Angelico traps the arms as if Lee was going for the gut wrench, then Angelico adds a chinlock. Lee endures, so Angelico changes to pulling on a leg! Lee then ties up the legs, and he borrows a page from Xelhua with this Floating Cloverleaf! Lee powers free, sunset flips, TWO, and Lee traps the legs. Lee steps on Angelico’s arm, it’s a Cloverleaf Stack Cover! TWO, but Lee reels Angelico in, BALD EAGLE! Angelico reaches out, ROPEBREAK!
Lee lets go, and he says Angelico’s got nothing left! Angelico steps up and grabs Lee’s hand to wrangle him! Angelico traps the arm and has the HALF CRAB!! Lee endures, kicks, ROPEBREAK! That’s Lee’s second, and we hit ten minutes. Angelico says Lee should be more careful, he’s only got one left. The two reset, the fans rally, and Angelico shoots back in. Waistlock, trip, and then a roll, back to the CALF KILLER ANKLE LOCK! But Lee pushes back, moves to a facelock and gator roll! Cover, TWO, TRIANGLE HOLD! Angelico endures, powers out, and laces through to get the omoplata! Angelico traps that arm, gets the other, DOUBLE OMOPLATA CLUTCH!
Lee kicks, kicks, ROPEBREAK! That’s the final ropebreak for Lee, and now neither man can save themselves! Angelico points that out, Lee shoots in, but Angelico steps over to trip Lee. Angelico rolls Lee to his feet, scoops, but Lee slips free! Lee straitjackets Angelico just to push him forward into a roll, EURO CLUCTH! TWO!! Angelico escapes, runs, and arm-drags to the lateral press, TWO! Lee has the ghost pin, TWO! Both men sand, Lee fakes Angelico out to spin and- NO, Angelico cradle counters! TWO! Lee has it, TWO! Both men stand, Angelico dodges and Lee flips through the ropes! Lee slips under, roll up, TWO!!
Lee has Angelico in the BORDER CITY STRETCH!! Angelico endures, but he can’t escape! Angelico TAPS, Lee wins!
Winner: Lee Moriarty, by pinfall (still ROH Pure Champion)
Not one punch, not one chop, not one kick! Just 12 and a half minutes of Pure wrestling! And in the end, Angelico shakes Lee’s hand. Will anyone ever end the Era of Taiga Style?
Backstage interview with Bandido and Nick Wayne.
Lexy Nair is with The Most Wanted and The Prodigy, and she makes the official announcement: At Death Before Dishonor, it will be Bandido VS Nick Wayne for the ROH World Championship! Nick says hold on, hold on. “Just” Nick Wayne? Put some respect on his name! The youngest champion in AEW and ROH history! He held the ROH World TV Championship for 387 days, for God sake! Disrespectful. Bandido says Nick calling him a prodigy, is he serious? Nick is nothing without honor! Bandido has been champion for 481 days, and he’s beaten some of the best wrestlers from around the world! So please, stop talking, shut your mouth, boy, please.
Nick says that’s cute, but honor doesn’t win titles, talent does. Death Before Dishonor, Nick sets another record as he becomes the youngest and greatest ROH World Champion the world has ever seen. Bandido groans and says okay. Then Friday, August 21st, in Philly, Nick gets his shot. Nick calls himself a prodigy, but Bandido will prove why he’s The Most Wanted. Nick says bet. Keep your head on a swivel. Nick heads out, but is he going to get a reality check when the title is on the line?
Backstage interview with The Kingdom.
Sam Laterna is with Matt Taven & Mike Bennett as they’re on their phones… She brings up their coming 8 Man Tag match tonight. It will be Alec Price, Jordan Oliver and The Von Erichs on one side, but who is teaming with The Kingdom? They let the phones listen in, do some AI suggestions, and according to “Sparta,” it says The Kingdom has been on an unbelievable winning streak since returning to ROH. But it says Bustah & Brain have also been winning a lot, except Kingdom beat them. So while Price & Oliver wanna play “tummy sticks” with Marshall & Ross, they’re busy using AI to figure out who their partners should be.
Taven says speaking of that intelligence, let’s reintroduce ourselves. This is Matthew Taven and Michael Bennett, they are The Computerized Kingdom, and thanks to Sparta, they’re wicked smaht. So they have a team they know there is an 87% chance of winning the match. Oh, hydration break. But see, you can’t spell “brain” without AI. Price & Oliver think they’re smart, but they’re not. And with you can’t spell this team’s name without an A and I, either! Ladies and gentlemen, Sparta has chosen Grizzled Young Veterans! Step aside, make room. Zack Gibson & James Drake step in, and Gibson wants them all to calm down.
Gibson says GYV is in desperate need of a big win, don’t let the stupid jokes and stupid phones get in the way of that. Gibson does not trust AI, and he doesn’t trust The Kingdom. Just don’t mess this up. GYV heads out, Taven has Sparta figure it out, and he reads, “Good call.” Oh, they’re gone… Can The Kingdom at least use their own intelligence when the bell rings? Or will there be a bit of lag going on later tonight?
Caprice Coleman Chops It Up with Shane Taylor.
Coleman welcomes us to the show and welcomes a man he has a lot of respect for, The CEO of STP, the baddest man in ROH, and- Shane says speaking of respect, since Coleman brought it up. A month ago, Coleman had Lee Moriarty here and told him that what STP does was “gangster activity.” Coleman of all people know better to tell Shane that, to speak about Shane and what he does like that. Everything he does for him and his people is good business, just like if anyone else did it. Do not make that mistake again. Now, conduct the interview.
Coleman takes a moment and says he didn’t know it came across like that, he apologizes. Some people can say things and get away with it, but with the role Coleman has, he has to be more careful with what he says about his people. He is sorry about that. But let’s talk about what’s happening now. They’re everywhere. Coleman is proud of Shane that he’s on Dynamite and Collision, going against Jon Moxley & The Death Riders. STP is doing everything. Lee is still the longest reigning Pure Champion, STP had the Six Man titles, doing everything they can do, everything they said they’d do it. Shane says he’s a man of his word.
Shane walks in, takes on “The Ace” of AEW, Jon Moxley. And on three separate occasions, Shane laid that man out. No one else can say that. There’s no other group in the history of AEW that has walked in and taken the fight to The Death Riders the way STP has. They walked in, punched Death Riders in the mouth, fought any way Death Riders wanted, and still walked out. This is what they do. Nobody can touch them. Then how does Shane feel about STP now? Where does he see them going? They’ve been running ROH, and that run will continue, and Coleman likes that, because Shane took people almost out of obscurity. Can Coleman put it like that?
Shane took those others might’ve turned their back on and put his arms around them. They’ve had titles, have different wavelengths of how they conduct themselves, all thanks to Shane. Shane says he enjoys finding the diamonds in the rough, finding the people that others said weren’t good enough, or just didn’t “see it.” Everyone that comes to Shane becomes a superstar, becomes a champion, and reaches the level of success that they dreamed about when they got into the industry. Coleman knows Shane doesn’t just choose anybody, they worked together before. So what does Shane look for? Because Shane has even surpassed what Coleman handed down.
Shane says he looks for heart and conviction, that’s all he needs. He needs to know they will be loyal to their goals. Not loyal to him, not even friendly, but if he can trust they’re being loyal to their goals, then he knows they will all get through. Coleman commends Shane, as he told Lee, that Shane can mentor these people while allowing them to be who they are. Of course. You can’t allow this society, industry, business, to change who you are. Shane hasn’t let it change him. At the end of the day, the money, the titles, the legacy, it’s great. But he still has to be his father’s son, his grandmother’s grandson, the person they raised.
That means his values, his vision, all of that has to stay. He lets everyone else be who they are. Then last question. The statement Shane once said, that they were raised to live in a society that doesn’t exist anymore. Tell us more about that. Shane says that is an answer they don’t have all the time for, but Shane says you gotta remain true to what you got into this business for. Chasing everything that comes with this, you can’t afford to lose yourself. Coleman says that’s a constant reminder of the dream they had, and he appreciates everything Shane is doing with STP. They shake hands, CH’YEAH! But what is next for STP as we head for Death Before Dishonor?
Athena speaks.
“You know it’s hard enough just being me. The Minion Overlord, the American Joshi, the Fallen Goddess, the Forever ROH (Women’s World) Champion, the most dominant champion in all of history, the longest reigning champion in the modern day era… Without dealing with all these desperate hussies trying to live in my wake. Women calling themselves ‘gods’ but they’ve done nothing to prove themselves. Champions calling themselves ‘forever’ when they’ve been around for a hot minute. But now it’s you, Hazuki. You not only cost me money, I put a big bet on myself because I had that in the bag, MIT was gonna beat The Brawling Birds.
“But you got the gleam of my Forever ROH Championship. At Death Before Dishonor, I’m gonna do one thing no one is ever gonna expect. I’m gonna bet on you, Hazuki. I’m gonna bet this quarter, because the odds are so stacked against you in this match, that even if you pull off a miracle, I will be a multi-millionaire by the end of the match. You’re gonna learn the same thing that everyone always learns, Hazuki: No man can touch my reign, no woman can live up to my legacy, because I am FOREVER the Forever ROH Champion. And at Death Before Dishonor, you and all your little supporters are gonna have to get over it.”
The match is made, and now Hazuki has her shot! But will she bring an end to forever? Or will the Minion Overlord break the Wildheart?
ROH shares footage from after Collision.
Last night, Juice Robinson returned backstage and asked, “You see that right there? You see that glisten? You see that glisten on those nipples? That’s the sweat I just worked up by getting a big W on AEW Collision! And I’m coming to ROH and I wanna put it to the test. Let’s see how good of a ‘wrestler’ I am. So Anthony Henry! You call yourself a Workhorseman? Well, let’s see how hard you can work, horse man! Let’s wrestle! Let’s get down and dirty! And let’s see who can get whose shoulders on the mat for a three count! I’m coming to ROH, brother, and you better be ready to wrestle!” The Stray Bullet is taking aim, but will he hit the mark?
Steph De Lander speaks.
“ROH, it’s been awhile. Things have changed. I have changed. I’m the best Pure Rules wrestler in ROH. Deonna, I know you know that, and you know that I know that you know that. Because I went out there and I beat Rachael Ellering, and that means I deserve a shot at the ROH Women’s Pure Rules Championship. If you’re the fighting champ that you say you are, you’ll put that title on the line, because you’ve been sitting pretty at the top for far too long, and that’s just cuz I wasn’t here. Things are about to change, because ROH is SDL.” Will Steph prove she really is the best when she takes down the best? Or will The Virtuosa paint another masterpiece?
Nigel McGuinness speaks.
“They say life is about timing. And no one knows that better than me. I earned a ROH Pure title opportunity at Supercard of Honor, and at Death Before Dishonor, I’m gonna take my shot. When you talk about timing, the last two times I faced Lee Moriarty, under Pure Rules and an Ironman match, he beat me. He was the better man. But if I can’t beat Lee Moriarty after three attempts, I shouldn’t ever challenge for the ROH Pure title again. In fact, y’know what, Lee? I’m gonna up the stakes. If I can’t beat you for the ROH Pure title, I will leave Death Before Dishonor, and I will never wrestle in ROH again.”
Nigel takes a breath after putting that weight on himself, then heads out. It is Nigel’s last chance, will he make the most of it?
8 Man Tag: Alec Price, Jordan Oliver & The Von Erichs VS The Kingdom & Grizzled Young Veterans!
Four teams all hungry to get at the ROH World Tag Team Championships are teaming up and facing off in an 8 Man Tag that is supposedly optimized thanks to AI. But will the combination of Bustah & The Brain with Ross & Marshall prove AI can’t do everything yet? Or will even “Sparta” agree to #GritYourTeeth?
The teams sort out, and Taven checks with Sparta. It seems Sparta suggests to let someone from GYV start, so Mike obliges. Mike- Er, Michael lets James Drake start against Price. The Code of Honor is not upheld as Drake slaps the hand away. The bell rings and the two tie up. Drake CLUBS Price, ROCKS him again and again, then wrenches an arm to a wristlock. Price goes around and around and around, then uses the ropes to flip through! Price arm-drags, then slips around to CROSSBODY! The fans fire up and Price brings Drake in. Drake fights the suplex, reaches out, tag to Gibson. Price suplexes but Gibson saves Drake.
Price waistlocks Gibson but he RAMS Price into the corner. Drake runs up to ELBOW! Gibson LARIATS! Feed to the WHEEL KICK! The fans are torn, and Taven says Sparta says this is going just as planned. Gibson CLUBS Price, brings him up, and back suplexes, but Price lands out! Tag to Oliver, they double kick and whip to DOUBLE ELBOW! High ten and Oliver runs, SENTON DOUBLE LEG DROP COMBO! The fans cheer, but then Gibson hot tags Taven! The Kingdom attacks Bustah & Brain, then they whip Oliver into a BOOT! BOSTON BAYONET! LARIAT! The fans are torn but Taven says Sparta was right about the game plan.
Taven whips, Oliver reverses, but Taven goes up and over, slides under, then DROPKICKS! Taven shouts, “IIIII’M Matt Taven! Matthew Taven!” Taven turns around into Marshall’s CHOP! Marshall whips, BACKDROPS, and Taven staggers into a scoop and SLAM! Mike runs up, but into a scop and SLAM! GYV mugs Marshall, DOUBLE SUPLEX, but Ross with the save! Then the Von Erichs both scoop and SLAM! Then they DOUBLE DROPKICK! The fans cheer as Kingdom and GYV regroup outside. They argue if Sparta’s plan is really working, but Drake still tags in. Drake runs up, but Ross dodge and arm-drags!
The fans cheer as Ross grinds the arm, but Drake fights around. Drake rises, Gibson reaches out, but Kingdom pushes him into the ring? Gibson asks what’s going on, the ref reprimands Gibson, but this lets Drake CLAW Ross’s face! Drake TOSSES Ross, then Taven says see, it worked out! Drake tags Gibson, Gibson picks up Ross, and they hit the ELBOW DROP BACKBREAKER COMBO! The fans boo but Mike cheers “the algorithm.” Gibson puts Ross on the apron, and SLAMS him off the edge! The fans boo more but Gibson puts Ross back in. Gibson keeps Ross from his team, then ROCKS him! Gibson stomps Ross, tags Taven, and they mug Ross.
Taven bumps Ross off buckles, digs his boot in, but the ref counts. Taven stops at 4, wrenches the arm, but then Mike is too busy checking with Sparta to tag. Taven snap suplexes, covers, TWO! Now Mike tags in because Sparta said so. Mike keeps Ross down with a facelock, then a scoop and SLAM! ELBOW DROP! Cover, TWO! The fans rally for Ross as Mike bumps him off buckles. Tag to Gibson, Taven gets a choke in before Gibson CLUBS Ross. Gibson UPPERCUTS Ross, and tag to Drake. Kingdom says double suplex is the suggested move. GYV ignores that, they kick and whip Ross to the corner. Drake runs up, but into an ELBOW!
Ross BOOTS Gibson, BOOTS Drake, then goes up! DOUBLE MISSILE DROPKICK! The fans fire up as Ross and GYV are down, and Taven says he told them! Taven tags in, and he BOOTS Marshall first! But Ross slips under Taven to hot tag Bustah! Price & Oliver both rush in, throw hands on Kingdom, but Kingdom whips, only for Bustah & Brain to DOUBLE LARIAT! Drake is back but Price whips. Drake reverses, but Price jumps up the rope to turn things back around on Drake. Oliver BODY BLOWS, Price KNEE SMASHES, then Oliver DROPKICKS! Price keeps moving so he can FLY onto Mike and Gibson!
The fans fire up as Oliver now Electric Chair Lifts Taven! Price is up, BUSTAH DOOMSDAY! Cover, Mike breaks it! But Oliver hits the RUNNING DDT! Gibson ROCKS Price! Gibson then clinches Oliver, Drake ENZIGIRIS Oliver down! But Price is up, DOUBLE BLOCK BUSTAH! The fans fire up as Taven LEG LARIATS Price! Oliver BOOTS Taven! BOSTON BAYONET on Oliver! Oliver just roars! But Mike dodges, fireman’s carries, DEATH VALLEY DRIVER! Taven hits JUST THE TIP of the knee! Price JUMP KNEES Mike! Taven SUPERKICKS Price! Taven whips, Price dodges, DROPKICK and CROSSBODY in one go!!
The fans fire up as everyone is down! Gibson and Marshall rise, the fans rally up, hot tags to Gibson and Marshall! Marshall LARIATS Gibson, fires haymakers, then ROCKS him in the corner. Marshall climbs but Drake yanks him down! Ross is there to CLUB Drake and bump him off buckles. The Von Erichs coordinate and trade, LARIATS in the corners! Then they trade again, DROPKICK and a CANNONBALL! The fans cheer as the Von Erichs wind up, IRON CLAWS IN STEREO!! The fans fire up for the Claw! Oliver keeps Taven out, but Taven POSTS Oliver! But then Bustah grabs Taven! Taven grabs the ref!
Mike steps in, LOW BLOW on Ross! LOW BLOW on Marshall! Gibson rolls Marshall, GYV & Kingdom win!!
Winners: The Kingdom & Grizzled Young Veterans, by pinfall
Taven says he told you so! Sparta figured it all out for them, and now they’re all winners! But will the AI truly be their salvation? Or will it be their enslaver?
Backstage interview with Deonna Purrazzo.
Sam Laterna is now with The Virtuosa and brings up Steph De Lander’s challenge. What is her response? Deonna says they are how many months into Deonna’s own open challenge, and she has yet to back down. So if Steph wants to challenge her for the title, and claim she’s the greatest Pure Rules wrestler ever? C’mon. Deonna watched the match with Rachael, Deonna saw no evidence of that. But when Deonna says it, the proof is right here on her shoulder. So “SDL,” consider the challenge accepted. It doesn’t how big you are, how tough you are, what your initials are, when you step in the ring with THE Virtuosa, the outcome is always the same: You become fluent in Purrazzo.
And so, made for Death Before Dishonor, Deonna and Steph are going to step into the 2300 Arena, ready to prove who is truly the best! Who comes out the other side having backed up their words with actions?
My Thoughts:
A good episode for ROH, though another case where they went over two hours for no relevant reason. And a little surprised that Moriarty VS Angelico went first. I get that in kayfabe, they want to give the match room if it were to go the full hour, but no Pure Rules match has even gone half an hour. It’d be great if they did, especially for occasions like this. Granted, Lee and Angelico did amazing work for just over 12 minutes, really getting creative with their holds, and it’s always great when ropebreaks are exhausted. But I still wonder, what’s the point of a gigantic time limit if you’re not even gonna come close?
Great win for Lee, though, and finally, we’re getting Lee VS Nigel 3. Nigel putting that pressure on himself, does that mean he wins and brings the Pure Title to All In? Or is Nigel’s All In moment going to be the Continental Cup finals? There’s only like 10 days between the two events, it’d be amazing if Nigel could do it all. Very good promo from Athena to announce and hype up the match with Hazuki. But chances are, Athena wins, this match with Hazuki feels like an improvised idea after they decided Maya World would become TBS Champion. Good promos from Steph and Deonna to set up their match, and I would think Deonna wins that, unless Steph finds a way to cheat.
Very good Chop It Up from Coleman and Shane. Maybe STP gets going again on ROH, maybe they get more traction on AEW, but they should get back up on title opportunities either way. For that matter, Shane should make more of a case for the ROH World title because even throwing Nick Wayne at Bandido feels like it’s own improvised idea. Good promo from Nick and Bandido, but unless Nick cheats, I don’t see him taking the title. And while The Kingdom “using AI” is a cheesy idea that pokes fun at the idea of AI in everyday life (and perhaps poking fun at the story of WWE using AI for creative), they’re making it work. They won out to get some heat, and I’m sure the story will end with Sparta failing them at the most critical moment.
My Score: 8.5/10
Also, if you’re wondering where my coverage of the YouTube special is, it ain’t happening. They are doing too much, not even properly advertising those specials, and it’s also in an effort to counterprogram NXT. I have way too much on my plate for more, and you see I’m already trimming ROH down as it is. Frankly, I might have to trim it even more, maybe throw Evolve into that boat, not sure.
