ESPN and NFL Network suffer major layoffs, Miami extends Jordyn Brooks, Taylor Moton faces a serious health issue and Cleveland’s quarterback battle begins.

ESPN’s integration of NFL Network resulted in a sweeping round of layoffs that removed several familiar faces from football coverage and extended into baseball, combat sports and SportsCenter.

Elsewhere, Miami secured All-Pro linebacker Jordyn Brooks through 2029, Carolina announced that Taylor Moton will miss the beginning of the season because of a blood clot, and Cleveland’s quarterbacks prepared together before beginning their training-camp competition.

ESPN and NFL Network Announce Major Layoffs

ESPN began its largest round of layoffs in three years following the company’s acquisition and integration of NFL Network. ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro told employees that most of the affected positions were connected to overlapping roles created by the transaction, although other areas of ESPN and Disney were also impacted.

Among the reported departures were Ryan Clark, Tom Pelissero, Charles Davis, Stephania Bell, Cam Newton and Bart Scott from football coverage. Veteran baseball broadcaster Karl Ravech, longtime SportsCenter anchor David Lloyd, combat sports reporter Andreas Hale and writer Dan Hajducky were also among the names affected.

Clark learned about his departure while appearing on NFL Live and did not return to finish the program. Pelissero’s exit followed ESPN’s decisions to extend fellow NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, leaving less room for another prominent national newsbreaker following the merger.

The layoffs extend well beyond the recognizable television personalities. Production employees and other behind-the-scenes staff were also affected as ESPN consolidated two major football media operations into one organization.

Dolphins Sign Jordyn Brooks to $51.3 Million Extension

Miami agreed to a three-year, $51.3 million extension with Jordyn Brooks that includes $35 million guaranteed. The contract keeps the first-team All-Pro linebacker with the Dolphins through the 2029 season.

Brooks led the NFL with 183 combined tackles and 99 solo tackles last season. He has recorded 326 tackles and 6.5 sacks during his two seasons in Miami after beginning his career with Seattle.

The extension continues Miami’s effort to build around a smaller group of foundational players under new head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. De’Von Achane and Aaron Brewer also received extensions during the offseason, while the organization moved away from several expensive veterans.

Taylor Moton to Miss Beginning of Season

Carolina announced that Moton is dealing with a blood clot in his lung and will miss the opening portion of the regular season.

Moton was diagnosed in June and is receiving treatment with blood thinners. The Panthers said he is responding well, but the veteran right tackle will begin camp on the non-football injury list and does not currently have a firm return date.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn will also begin camp on the NFI list after suffering a cut on his foot that required stitches. Horn’s absence is expected to be significantly shorter, with Carolina anticipating that he will return during the early portion of training camp.

Moton has started 128 games since Carolina selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Losing him for any portion of the season removes one of the Panthers’ most dependable players from an offense that will need stability up front.

Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson Prepare Together

Sanders and Watson trained together in Miami before beginning their competition for Cleveland’s starting quarterback position.

Jerry Jeudy, Isaiah Bond, Cedric Tillman, KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston were among the receivers who participated. Sanders said both quarterbacks are focused on becoming the best versions of themselves rather than allowing the competition to damage their working relationship.

New head coach Todd Monken has not established a deadline for naming his starter. The workouts should allow Cleveland’s receivers to begin camp with experience catching passes from both candidates, but the real separation will occur once practices and preseason games begin.

Nico Collins Says He Is Healthy for Camp

Collins said his limited participation during Houston’s offseason program was not connected to an injury.

The Texans reduced his workload to ensure that their top receiver would be rested for training camp. Collins has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in three consecutive seasons, but injuries have prevented him from playing every game during any of his first five NFL campaigns.

Houston’s offense remains heavily dependent on Collins. He finished last season with 1,117 receiving yards, while no other Texans wide receiver reached 600, making his availability one of the team’s most important training-camp storylines.

Moton’s health outweighs Carolina’s immediate football concerns. The Panthers will have to replace him temporarily, but the larger priority is ensuring that a player dealing with a blood clot receives the time and treatment necessary to return safely.
