Vita Vea Requests Trade From Buccaneers

Vita Vea has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after negotiations over a new contract failed to produce an agreement.

The two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle is entering the final season of the four-year, $71 million extension he signed in 2022. He is scheduled to earn a $17 million base salary, but none of that money is guaranteed. He can also earn up to $1 million through per-game roster bonuses.

Vea attended Tampa Bay’s mandatory minicamp but did not participate in practices. Head coach Todd Bowles said at the time that Vea was healthy and described the hold-in as part of the business side of football.

The 31-year-old started all 17 games last season, recording 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hits.

Tampa Bay can continue negotiating, deny the request and require Vea to play the final season of his contract or determine what another team would surrender for an established interior defender.

Trading him would create an immediate weakness in the middle of the Buccaneers’ defense. Extending him would require Tampa Bay to guarantee significant money to a player who will turn 32 during the season. Neither option comes without risk.

Micah Parsons Expected to Miss Time Until October

The Green Bay Packers expect to place Micah Parsons on the physically unable to perform list because of his knee injury.

Parsons was not placed on the list Monday because of procedural and timing considerations, but the Packers expect to add him Tuesday. He is currently expected to remain unavailable until October.

Green Bay also placed tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave, guard Aaron Banks, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and defensive back Kamal Hadden on the PUP list.

The Packers have time to prepare for the absence, but replacing Parsons requires more than assigning additional snaps to one reserve. His ability to rush from different alignments changes protections and creates opportunities for the rest of the defense.

Green Bay must build an early-season pressure plan without knowing exactly when Parsons will be ready to return or how quickly he will regain his normal workload.

Daniel Jones Cleared for Full Training-Camp Participation

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones says he will be a full participant when the team opens training camp Wednesday. Jones tore his Achilles against Jacksonville in Week 14, giving him approximately seven-and-a-half months to recover before the Colts’ first practice.

He participated in seven-on-seven work during organized team activities and completed additional running exercises after practices. Jones now expects to participate in full 11-on-11 drills without limitations.

Before the injury, Jones passed for 3,101 yards and 19 touchdowns while adding five rushing scores in 13 starts.

Indianapolis does not need Jones to prove everything during the first week of camp. The Colts need him to demonstrate that his mobility, timing and confidence have returned without creating a setback before the preseason begins.

His clearance is an important milestone, but sustaining that availability through repeated practices will provide a better indication of whether the offense can regain its early-2025 form.

Vikings Agree to Deal With Jamal Adams

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with three-time Pro Bowl defender Jamal Adams.

Adams spent most of his career at safety before playing linebacker with the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He recorded 45 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble while appearing in all 17 games.

The 30-year-old has accumulated 546 tackles, 22.5 sacks, four interceptions, 36 passes defended and eight forced fumbles during his career.

His exact role has not been determined, but his arrival comes while veteran safety Harrison Smith continues considering retirement.

Minnesota is not asking Adams to become the centerpiece of its defense. The Vikings are giving defensive coordinator Brian Flores another experienced player who can line up in multiple positions, attack the line of scrimmage and disguise pressure.

Adams’ recent production has not matched his peak seasons with the Jets and Seahawks, but a specialized role may allow Minnesota to use what he still does well without exposing him as a traditional full-time safety.

Commanders Fire Tight Ends Coach Ben Steele

The Washington Commanders have fired tight ends coach Ben Steele on the eve of training camp.

The move followed Steele’s June arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He also faces charges connected to refusing a blood or breath test and obstructing or resisting an officer without force.

Steele informed the team of the arrest and had been placed on leave. Offensive assistant Wes Welker handled the tight ends during mandatory minicamp.

Steele joined Washington’s coaching staff earlier this year after spending three seasons in the same position with the Arizona Cardinals.

Washington acted before the situation could remain attached to the opening of camp. Welker’s previous work with the position group gives the Commanders an immediate internal option while Dan Quinn determines whether to make a permanent reassignment or add another coach.

Vea’s request creates the largest immediate decision. Tampa Bay must balance its chances of competing in 2026 against the financial risk of extending an aging defensive tackle or the competitive damage created by trading him.

Green Bay and Indianapolis face opposite injury situations. The Packers know their most disruptive defender will not be ready when the season begins, while the Colts are receiving their starting quarterback back earlier than many expected.

Adams gives Minnesota another flexible defensive option, but his signing is not a complete answer to any potential change involving Smith. The Vikings still need to determine whether Adams is best used as a safety, linebacker or designated pressure player.

Training camp has barely begun, but contract disputes, injury timelines and coaching decisions are already changing plans. Teams that handle those disruptions without forcing immediate solutions will give themselves the best chance to enter September with functional depth.
