Tanahashi Aims to Keep Retiring Legends Like Tiger Mask IV and Tenzan Involved in NJPW

NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi says he’s exploring ways to keep retiring stars contributing to the company after they leave the ring. Tanahashi, who retired from in-ring competition in January 2026 and now serves full-time as president, pointed to a strong atmosphere from Wrestle Kingdom to Dominion and said the promotion’s immediate in-ring focus is the G1, while outside the ring he wants roles for legends such as Tiger Mask IV and Hiroyoshi Tenzan.

Tiger Mask IV will hold his retirement show at Korakuen Hall on July 7 with two five-minute matches — Black Tiger (Rocky Romero returning to the character) and “Dynamite Kid” Tommy Billington — while Tenzan’s final bout is set for August 15 at Sumo Hall during the G1 semifinals undercard with an opponent still unannounced. Tanahashi called Tenzan’s potential continued presence “invaluable” as a mentor for younger talent.
