Tomoaki Honma Announces Retirement After Neck Concerns
At a non-televised New Japan Pro Wrestling event in his hometown of Yamagata on Saturday, Tomoaki Honma addressed the live crowd and announced he has decided to retire after recent physical examinations raised renewed concerns about his neck. Honma, who suffered a serious spinal injury in 2017 that left him temporarily paralyzed, said he agonized over the decision but is grateful for a 30-year career in professional wrestling.
Honma told fans he plans to improve his conditioning with the aim of holding a retirement match in Yamagata next year. The 1997 Big Japan Pro Wrestling debutant is a former IWGP Tag Team Champion with Togi Makabe and co-winner of NJPW’s World Tag League in 2015 and 2016; NJPW returns to Korakuen Hall before beginning G1 Climax 36 in the United States on July 11.
