Nick Aldis will face Gunther at SummerSlam, WWE announces Monday’s Raw lineup, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes clash, Sheamus gets a contract update and more.

Nick Aldis will step out of his authority role and face Gunther at SummerSlam after their increasingly personal rivalry erupted during WWE’s SummerSlam Kickoff event. Monday’s Raw will begin dealing with the fallout from Saturday Night’s Main Event while continuing the build toward WWE’s two-night event in Minneapolis.

Elsewhere, the tension between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes became openly hostile, Sheamus reportedly remains under WWE contract longer than originally believed, and Yuya Uemura scored an important G1 Climax victory over Zack Sabre Jr.

Gunther vs. Nick Aldis Made Official for SummerSlam

Gunther confronted Triple H during Sunday’s SummerSlam Kickoff at Fanatics Fest and demanded consequences for Aldis interfering in the Saturday Night’s Main Event main event. Aldis had struck Gunther with CM Punk’s championship belt, costing Gunther and Sami Zayn their opportunity to enter the Undisputed WWE Championship match at SummerSlam.

Aldis interrupted the confrontation and invited Gunther to settle their problem directly. Gunther attacked him, but Aldis quickly recovered and fought back until security separated them.

Triple H then made Gunther against Aldis official for SummerSlam. The match transforms what began as a conflict between a wrestler and an authority figure into one of the event’s most personal grudge matches.

For Aldis, this is first match in WWE, but he’s an extremely accomplished and talented former world champion in both TNA and the NWA. He fought Cody Rhodes over the latter at the first ALL IN in 2018.

What to Watch on WWE Raw

Seth Rollins will open Monday’s Raw following his confrontation with Roman Reigns at Madison Square Garden and his appearance during the SummerSlam Kickoff. Rollins continues to insist that the World Heavyweight Championship belongs to him and that Reigns has never proven he can defeat him when the stakes are highest.

Jacob Fatu will face LA Knight in the only match announced before the show. The two men will be on opposite sides of the SummerSlam six-man tag, with Fatu joining The Usos against Knight, Solo Sikoa and Royce Keys.

Chad Gable and Danhausen are also scheduled to appear. Gable will challenge Penta for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam, while Danhausen has unfinished business with Dominik Mysterio after defeating JD McDonagh with assistance from Karl-Anthony Towns.

CM Punk and Cody Rhodes’ Rivalry Becomes Personal

Punk and Rhodes survived their partnership at Saturday Night’s Main Event, but their relationship deteriorated after Punk’s championship belt struck Rhodes in the face during their post-match celebration.

The two argued backstage before revisiting the incident during the SummerSlam Kickoff. Punk described the contact as accidental and attempted to move forward by saying that brothers occasionally fight. Rhodes rejected the comparison, told Punk that he was not his brother and said he did not believe the incident was an accident.

Punk eventually apologized before deliberately shoving his hand into Rhodes’ face. He called the gesture intentional and referred to Rhodes as his “little brother” as police and security separated them.

The exchange finally gave their championship match a conflict beyond professional respect. Punk continues presenting himself as the experienced champion trying to reason with an emotional challenger, while Rhodes increasingly believes that Punk’s friendly demeanor is hiding his actual intentions.

Sheamus Remains Under WWE Contract Until October

Sheamus reportedly remains under WWE contract through October 1, delaying his expected entry into free agency.

Earlier reports indicated that the former world champion would leave WWE when his contract expired, but the specific timetable was unclear. It is also unknown whether WWE added injury time to the agreement or whether the October expiration date was always part of the contract.

Sheamus reportedly rejected a proposed restructured deal earlier this year, although the offer was not presented as an ultimatum. He has been with WWE for nearly 20 years and has held the WWE Championship three times and the World Heavyweight Championship once.

Yuya Uemura Defeats Zack Sabre Jr. in G1 Main Event

Uemura defeated Sabre in the main event of Sunday’s G1 Climax event in Hokkaido, earning his first tournament victory and moving to four points in the B Block.

Sabre remained at two points after suffering his first defeat of the tournament. HENARE, Gabe Kidd and Ren Narita also collected victories, leaving much of the block tightly grouped during the opening stage of the round-robin tournament.

Aldis against Gunther gives WWE a match that feels different from the rest of the SummerSlam lineup. It does not need a championship or complicated stipulation because the audience has already watched Gunther repeatedly push Aldis until the general manager finally responded.

Raw’s announced lineup is light on matches, but each advertised appearance connects directly to SummerSlam. Rollins must answer Reigns’ Madison Square Garden statement, Fatu and Knight receive an early opportunity to weaken one another, and Danhausen’s issue with Dominik has clearly continued beyond Saturday’s spectacle.

Punk and Rhodes may have produced the most important development of the weekend. Their matchup no longer feels like two respected stars politely competing for a championship. Distrust has entered the story, and both men now have two weeks to prove which one is misreading the other.
