CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes is set for SummerSlam, Baron Corbin returns on SmackDown, Rhea Ripley gives an injury update, and AEW Collision airs tonight.
Welcome to The Chairshot Wrestling News Morning Report for July 11, 2026, bringing you the biggest wrestling news stories, results, and announcements from the past 24 hours. Today’s report starts with SmackDown officially setting CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes for SummerSlam, then moves through Gunther’s latest attack, Baron Corbin’s surprise return, Rhea Ripley’s injury update, Jim Ross’ health situation, AEW’s Brawl in the Ballpark results, and a busy Saturday watch list.
CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes Set For SummerSlam
CM Punk’s first SmackDown appearance as Undisputed WWE Champion immediately set the table for SummerSlam, as Cody Rhodes confronted Punk and emerged as his next challenger. WWE’s official SmackDown results note that Punk returned to the brand after replacing Rhodes on Raw and defeating Sami Zayn for the championship, with Rhodes then stepping forward to challenge “The Second City Saint.” That gives WWE a major SummerSlam title match right away, and it also makes the first week of Punk’s reign feel less like a celebration and more like a collision course.
WWE also added another layer to the chaos by announcing CM Punk and Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther and Sami Zayn for Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18. That match came together after Gunther confronted Nick Aldis, with WWE’s preview noting that Aldis made the tag team match after speaking with Zayn by phone, only for Gunther to attack the SmackDown General Manager afterward. Punk and Cody may be aligned for one night, but with SummerSlam coming, that alliance already feels temporary.
Gunther Attacks Nick Aldis After Saturday Night’s Main Event Decision
Gunther did not take the latest title-picture decision well. After learning he would team with Sami Zayn against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event instead of getting his own immediate title opportunity, Gunther attacked Nick Aldis with multiple sleepers, forcing Cody Rhodes to make the save. WWE framed it as an “unhinged” attack on the SmackDown General Manager, and that is exactly the kind of thing that can turn Gunther from title contender into weekly problem for the entire brand.
And we’re definitely getting Gunther vs Aldis at SummerSlam, right?
Baron Corbin Returns During Trick Williams vs. Carmelo Hayes
Baron Corbin is back in WWE, and he picked a loud spot for the return. Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes were headed toward a major SmackDown main-event moment when Corbin reemerged and attacked both men, causing their match to end in a no contest. WWE’s official results described Corbin’s return as coming “out of nowhere,” and the placement matters: attacking Trick and Melo puts him directly into a featured United States Championship orbit instead of easing him back in quietly.
Rhea Ripley Reveals Slight Meniscus Tear
Rhea Ripley has finally provided more detail on the knee injury that has kept her out of action. Speaking at Power Slap on July 10, Ripley said she has a slight tear in her meniscus and that the recovery timeline is still uncertain because of where the tear is located. Fightful notes that Ripley has been out just over a month, and WWE previously announced on the June 12 SmackDown that she had suffered a knee injury in Italy.
Jim Ross Set To Undergo Brain Surgery
Jim Ross revealed on Grilling JR that he is preparing to undergo brain surgery following a lengthy hospital stay that began after a fall. Ross said the procedure is intended to address fluid on his brain that has affected his memory, adding that he had to receive cardiologist approval before moving forward. Fightful transcribed Ross saying the surgery could happen in the next week or so, and while Ross remains Ross with the humor, this is a serious health story around one of wrestling’s most beloved voices.
AEW Holds Brawl In The Ballpark After Twins Game
AEW and the Minnesota Twins teamed up for Brawl in the Ballpark at Target Field, with the postgame wrestling event taking place after the Twins’ July 10 game. Fightful’s results list Orange Cassidy defeating Wheeler Yuta, Top Flight and Komander beating Action Andretti, Hook, and Anthony Bowens, Julia Hart defeating Hyan, Brian Cage defeating Serpentico, and The Hurt Syndicate beating Shane Taylor Promotions. For AEW, this was less about major storyline advancement and more about brand extension, putting wrestling in front of a ballpark crowd and creating another sports-crossover event.
SmackDown Quick Results And Fallout
- Finn Bálor defeated Tama Tonga.
- Jimmy Uso defeated Royce Keys.
- Jade Cargill defeated Alexa Bliss, then injured Bliss’ arm with a steel chair after the match.
- Trick Williams vs. Carmelo Hayes ended in a no contest after Baron Corbin returned and attacked both men.
- CM Punk and Cody Rhodes agreed to a SummerSlam WWE Championship match.
- Gunther attacked Nick Aldis after the announcement of Punk and Cody vs. Gunther and Sami Zayn for Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Tonight’s Watch List
Saturday’s biggest wrestling watch is AEW Collision, airing at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and HBO Max from the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The lineup is title-heavy, with Bandido defending the ROH World Championship against Katsuyori Shibata, Mark Davis defending the AEW National Championship against “Speedball” Mike Bailey, Hikaru Shida defending the TBS Championship against Harley Cameron, and Hangman Page advertised to return.
There is also AAA on FOX Latin America, with the show airing at 8 p.m. ET in Mexico and 10 p.m. ET in the United States on YouTube. The advertised lineup includes Dragon Lee vs. Jack Cartwheel vs. Mini Vikingo in a number one contender’s match for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship, plus appearances from AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano.
Whether you liked Punk’s win on Raw or not, SmackDown did exactly what it needed to do coming out of CM Punk’s title win: establish Punk as the champion, give Cody Rhodes the SummerSlam spotlight, keep Sami Zayn and Gunther involved, and create enough chaos to carry the story into Saturday Night’s Main Event. Add in Baron Corbin’s return, Rhea Ripley’s injury update, Jim Ross’ health news, plus a stacked Collision lineup and a fun AAA on FOX tonight, and we have a loaded Saturday ahead.
