Kingdom Hearts IV gets a 2027 window and Coco world, Robert Downey Jr. returns as Iron Man and Star Wars connects Disneyland directly to Fortnite.

D23 closed with one especially useful gift for Kingdom Hearts fans: actual information about a game they have been waiting years to play.

Disney and Square Enix finally showed an extended look at Kingdom Hearts IV, while Robert Downey Jr. found another way to play Iron Man and Disney launched its first direct connection between a physical theme-park attraction and Fortnite.

Kingdom Hearts IV Targets Late 2027 and Adds Coco

Square Enix and Disney unveiled approximately four minutes of new Kingdom Hearts IV footage at D23, confirming a late 2027 release window and revealing Pixar’s Coco as the game’s first announced Disney world. Sora remains trapped in Quadratum following Kingdom Hearts III, while Donald, Goofy, King Mickey and Maleficent are confirmed to return. The presentation also revealed a stylized “Paper Mickey Mouse” world that allows players to control Mickey inside a storybook-inspired environment.

For Kingdom Hearts fans, “late 2027” may be the most beautiful phrase Square Enix has ever put on a screen.

The Coco world is also almost suspiciously perfect for this franchise. A story built around hearts, memory, death and maintaining connections with people who are gone fits naturally into everything Kingdom Hearts has spent decades talking about.

And yes, explaining exactly how it connects to Sora’s current metaphysical predicament will probably require seventeen cutscenes and somebody in a black coat.

That is part of the charm.

Robert Downey Jr. Is Iron Man Again — At Disneyland

Robert Downey Jr. will reprise Tony Stark/Iron Man for Avengers: Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab, two attractions coming to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure in 2028. Infinity Defense will also feature Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, while Downey, Mackie and Brie Larson will appear as instructors in Stark Flight Lab.

Apparently Doctor Doom does not prevent somebody from picking up an occasional shift as Tony Stark.

The important distinction is that Disney Parks do not have to obey the MCU’s current timeline in the same way a movie does. Tony Stark can remain alive indefinitely inside Avengers Campus without Endgame suddenly becoming meaningless.

That is probably the ideal place for Downey’s Iron Man now.

The character remains available to generations of fans without Marvel needing to resurrect him every time nostalgia gets expensive enough.

Star Wars Connects Smugglers Run Directly to Fortnite

Disney and Epic Games have launched Smuggler’s Gambit, a new Fortnite island connected directly to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Guests can accept missions through Disney’s park apps before riding the physical attraction, with their performance aboard the Millennium Falcon capable of unlocking rewards inside Fortnite. Disney describes it as the first experience directly connecting gameplay inside one of its theme-park attractions with a digital game world.

This may eventually become much more important than one Star Wars crossover.

Disney invested heavily in Epic because it wants something larger than another collection of character skins.

Connecting something a person physically does at Galaxy’s Edge to what happens later inside Fortnite is the first real glimpse of what that strategy could become.

Today it is the Millennium Falcon.

If this works, there is no reason Avengers Campus, Pixar properties or entire Disney park events could not eventually operate the same way.

Lanterns Officially Begins the Next Major Chapter of the DCU

DC Studios’ Lanterns premiered Sunday night on HBO and HBO Max, with Kyle Chandler starring as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart. The eight-episode series centers on the pair investigating a murder in Nebraska that develops into a larger extraterrestrial mystery, with episodes scheduled weekly through October 4.

This is the DCU test I have been most curious about.

Not because Green Lantern is bigger than Superman, but because Lanterns has been sold as something structurally different: a grounded detective story that happens to involve two men carrying the most powerful weapons in the universe.

If that works, James Gunn and Peter Safran suddenly have proof that “DCU project” does not have to describe a genre.

Superheroes can simply be characters who wander into completely different kinds of television.

That opens a lot more doors than another traditional cape show.

The Physical and Digital Disney Worlds Are Getting Harder to Separate

The Smugglers Run/Fortnite connection arrives more than two years after Disney announced its $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games and its plan to build a broader persistent digital universe around Disney properties. The new Star Wars integration represents the first time performance inside a Disney park attraction directly carries over into a Fortnite experience.

This is where “metaverse” stops being a buzzword on an investor slide and becomes something normal people can actually understand.

Ride the Millennium Falcon.

Get something in the game.

That sentence does more to explain Disney’s Epic strategy than a thousand-word corporate presentation ever could.

The question now is whether fans find the connection genuinely fun—or whether it eventually becomes another reason everyone needs three apps open while visiting a theme park.

D23 spent much of the weekend showing fans what Disney will release over the next several years.

Sunday’s biggest announcements were more interesting because they showed how Disney wants its worlds to connect.

Kingdom Hearts IV is literally built around Disney universes colliding. Tony Stark can live forever in Avengers Campus even while Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom on movie screens. A Star Wars ride can now follow you home into Fortnite.

For fans, that increasingly means the boundaries between movies, games, streaming and theme parks are becoming less important.

Whether that sounds exciting or exhausting will depend entirely on how good the experiences are.
