Wednesday brought some genuinely sad news alongside the usual Gamescom chaos.

Tim Curry, whose career ran from Rocky Horror to Clue to Pennywise, has died at 80.

Elsewhere, Amazon found its new RoboCop, the Future Games Show produced another wave of gaming announcements and PlayStation revealed what subscribers are getting in September.

Tim Curry Dies at 80

Tim Curry died Tuesday at his home in Toluca Lake at age 80, according to his longtime manager. Curry became a pop-culture icon through roles including Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pennywise in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It and Wadsworth in Clue, while continuing to work after suffering a stroke in 2013.

There are actors remembered for one generation. Curry somehow kept collecting generations.

Rocky Horror fans knew him one way. Kids terrified by Pennywise knew him another. Clue fans can probably recite entire scenes without realizing how much Curry’s increasingly frantic performance makes the movie work. Then there is an enormous voice-acting résumé sitting underneath all of that.

The common thread was always commitment. Curry could play something completely absurd and never appear to believe it was beneath him. That is why so many of those performances lasted.

Dan Stevens Will Be RoboCop

Dan Stevens has been cast as Alex Murphy and RoboCop in Prime Video’s upcoming television adaptation of the MGM franchise. The series is being developed for Amazon under showrunner Peter Ocko, with James Wan among the executive producers.

Stevens is a really interesting choice. RoboCop is obviously a physical role. The character also works because there is a human being trapped underneath the corporate hardware.

That tension is more important than simply finding somebody who looks convincing inside armor. Stevens has spent enough of his career choosing strange genre projects that this feels like a natural next swing. The bigger question is tone. RoboCop becomes considerably less interesting when somebody forgets it is satire.

Worms Goes Galactic

Team17 revealed Worms Galactic Tactics during Wednesday’s Future Games Show at Gamescom. The spinoff takes the long-running franchise into tactical strategy on PC and consoles in 2027, while Team17 also confirmed that a new mainline Worms game is in development.

Worms has always technically been a strategy game. It has also always involved accidentally firing a bazooka into the wall directly in front of you while everybody laughs.

Galactic Tactics leaning harder into the strategy side feels like a reasonable experiment without sacrificing the franchise itself. The bigger news may be the other announcement.

A new traditional Worms game is coming too. That means Team17 gets to experiment without asking longtime fans to accept the experiment as the replacement. Everybody wins. Except probably whichever worm gets hit with the Holy Hand Grenade.

PlayStation Plus Reveals September Games

Sony announced that September’s PlayStation Plus Monthly Games will include Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Wobbly Life and Chained Echoes. All four games become available to subscribers on September 1 and remain claimable through October 5.

That is a surprisingly varied month. You have sniper rifles. Baseball. A deliberately ridiculous physics sandbox. And one of the better modern attempts to recreate the feeling of a 16-bit JRPG.

Subscription lineups work best when they do not assume everybody subscribed for the same reason. September definitely does not.

Future Games Show Reveals Dungeons & Dragons Tavern Sim

Dotemu revealed Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern during the Future Games Show, a fantasy life simulator scheduled for PC in early 2027. Instead of entering dungeons, players run the establishment where adventurers presumably complain about whatever happened inside those dungeons.

This is an extremely smart use of the Dungeons & Dragons license. Not every game needs to make the player the hero. The tavern is one of the most recognizable pieces of fantasy role-playing culture anyway.

It is where parties meet. Quests begin. Rumors spread. And somebody inevitably starts a fight.

Turning that into the actual game instead of the place players visit between adventures is exactly the kind of smaller idea a giant franchise should be willing to try.

Ridley Scott Still Wants More Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott says discussions continue around another Alien film connected to Covenant, with Michael Fassbender’s David remaining central to the concept. Scott also expressed frustration over no longer controlling the Blade Runner property as Amazon moves ahead with Blade Runner 2099.

Alien remains in the unusual position of having several different generations of fans who want completely different versions of Alien.

Some want horror. Some want action. Scott still appears fascinated by David, artificial intelligence and the creation mythology explored in Prometheus and Covenant.

That does not mean another Covenant follow-up is guaranteed. It does mean Scott has not finished arguing for one. Considering Alien has survived for nearly fifty years by repeatedly reinventing itself, another strange chapter would hardly be out of character.

Coyote vs. Acme Finally Reaches Theaters Friday

Coyote vs. Acme opens in U.S. theaters Friday, August 28, nearly three years after Warner Bros. originally shelved the completed movie. Cast members have now revealed that the filmmakers once held what amounted to an emotional “funeral screening” when they believed audiences might never see it.

There may not be a more appropriate movie character for this story than Wile E. Coyote. The movie got dropped off a cliff. Blown up. Buried. Declared dead. And somehow kept crawling back into frame.

Whether Coyote vs. Acme is actually good is now almost a separate question from how remarkable it is that people finally get to judge it themselves. Movies are supposed to reach audiences. This one had to survive its own studio first.

What to Watch: Gamescom Keeps Going

Gamescom continues Thursday with another Xbox broadcast from Cologne and additional demonstrations across the show floor. The convention runs through August 30, with hands-on impressions continuing to emerge for several major upcoming releases.

Opening Night Live gave us the large announcements. The Future Games Show gave us the weirder ones.

Now comes the portion where fans start hearing from people who actually played these games. That matters more. Trailers are promises. Gamescom’s show floor is where some of those promises start getting tested.
