Peter Cullen dies at 85, Miami Vice ’85 adds Danny Ramirez and Gamescom delivers Alien Deathstorm, Dumpster Gang and more.
Peter Cullen, the voice that defined Optimus Prime for generations of Transformers fans, has died at 85.
Elsewhere, Danny Ramirez joined the increasingly stacked Miami Vice ’85 cast and Gamescom continued producing exactly the kind of strange game announcements that make giant industry showcases fun.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for August 28, 2026!
Peter Cullen Dies at 85
Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor best known as Optimus Prime across decades of Transformers animation, films and games, died August 26 at age 85. Cullen also voiced Eeyore in numerous Winnie the Pooh projects during a career spanning more than five decades.
Some voice performances become associated with a character. Cullen’s became the character. Optimus Prime has been redesigned, rebooted and reimagined repeatedly since the 1980s.
That voice remained the constant. Calm. Authoritative. Kind.
Capable of making a speech about giant alien robots fighting over Energon somehow sound like a statement about morality. Generations of Transformers fans heard Cullen and immediately knew who had entered the scene. That is about as permanent a legacy as voice acting can produce.
Danny Ramirez Joins Miami Vice ’85
Danny Ramirez has joined Universal’s Miami Vice ’85 alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. Details surrounding Ramirez’s role remain under wraps as the film continues assembling its cast.
The casting is becoming the easiest part of this movie to get excited about. Jordan. Butler. Ramirez.
There is plenty of charisma available. The bigger challenge is figuring out what Miami Vice means as a movie in 2026. Copy the television series too closely and it becomes cosplay.
Strip away too much style and there is no reason to call it Miami Vice. The title “’85” suggests the filmmakers understand that the era is not background decoration. It is part of the entire point.
Alien Deathstorm Shows How Bad Its Storm Really Is
Rebellion revealed new Gamescom footage for Alien Deathstorm, its first-person survival shooter set on an off-world mining colony being torn apart by a massive planetary storm while intelligent alien creatures hunt the player. Rebellion says the aliens dynamically adapt to scenarios and player behavior, with the game scheduled for spring 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The best detail may be that you are not playing a super soldier. You are an engineer. That changes the fantasy.
Alien games become considerably scarier when the player feels like somebody trying to survive the problem rather than somebody who was specifically trained to solve it with a machine gun.
Rebellion knows shooters. If Deathstorm can combine that experience with genuine vulnerability, the studio may have something more interesting than another corridor full of targets.
Dumpster Gang Lets You Become the Problem
Coyote House Games and Curve Games revealed Dumpster Gang during Xbox’s Gamescom broadcast. The one-to-four-player sandbox game lets players control raccoons breaking into buildings, stealing junk, raiding food and escaping an exterminator. It launches on Xbox PC in December and will join PC Game Pass on day one.
Finally. Video games have spent decades allowing us to become soldiers, superheroes, assassins and professional athletes. Now technology has evolved enough to deliver the fantasy civilization actually needed: Being a tiny criminal with hands.
The best co-op games usually understand that players will create their own comedy if developers give them enough systems to misuse. Raccoons stealing household garbage already sounds like the correct foundation.
Scott Pilgrim EX Gets the Band Back Together
Tribute Games released the Back in the Band DLC for Scott Pilgrim EX, adding Stephen Stills, Kim Pine and Knives Chau as playable characters and completing the Sex Bob-omb lineup.
This is exactly the kind of DLC that fits Scott Pilgrim. The characters matter as much as the mechanics. Stephen, Kim and Knives should not simply be three differently animated versions of the same moveset.
Tribute says it approached each character around personality first, which is the right instinct for a universe where every punch, pose and ridiculous reaction is part of the joke. Sometimes “more characters” is enough. Here, the characters are the reason.
Roblox Agrees to Stronger Child-Safety Measures in the Philippines
Roblox and Meta agreed to strengthen child-safety protections for users in the Philippines after discussions with the country’s government. Measures include enhanced age verification, parental controls, faster removal of harmful content and greater cooperation with law enforcement.
This is considerably more important than another feature update. Roblox has become less a traditional game than an enormous online social environment occupied by millions of children. That brings responsibilities closer to those faced by social platforms than by ordinary game publishers.
Better age verification and parental controls will not eliminate every safety problem. They are still the minimum kind of infrastructure platforms this large should be expected to build.
Gamescom’s Indie Showcase Gets Weird
Thursday’s Gamescom Awesome Indies presentation highlighted dozens of smaller projects, including CAAAHR!, a November 2 PC game where two players share control of one vehicle—and one player controls the accelerator by literally making noise into a microphone.
This is why giant gaming events still need indie showcases. AAA developers spend years trying to perfect familiar systems. Indie developers occasionally ask:
“What if screaming made the car go faster?”
That does not mean every weird idea becomes a great game. It means the medium remains healthier when somebody is still willing to try something ridiculous simply because nobody else has.
What to Watch
Gamescom continues through Sunday, August 30, with the Best of Gamescom presentation scheduled for Sunday and additional hands-on impressions continuing to emerge from Cologne.
The biggest announcements are mostly behind us. That does not mean the useful information is. Fans now get several days of people actually playing games that publishers spent months presenting through carefully edited footage. That is where expectations start becoming informed opinions.
And after a week full of Witcher, Gears, Final Fantasy and giant franchise news, it is worth remembering that sometimes the most memorable Gamescom idea is still just four raccoons robbing somebody’s kitchen.
