Ketchup Entertainment later acquired worldwide distribution rights for approximately $50 million, and the film debuted with an A CinemaScore and a 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score.

The opening is not enormous when judged against the original $70 million production budget, but that ignores the extraordinary route the movie took to reach a theater at all. Coyote vs. Acme spent years as the symbol of studios deciding that completed creative work could be worth more as an accounting decision than as something audiences were allowed to see.

The strong reception matters as much as the box office because it makes the original shelving decision even harder to defend creatively. At this point, the interesting question is no longer whether Brand New Day qualifies as a hit. The movie is now moving through the historical record book, where another weekend of ordinary blockbuster business can produce another extraordinary career milestone.

Its domestic performance may be even more impressive than the worldwide number. Modern blockbusters frequently build enormous totals through international markets, but reaching nearly $900 million in North America puts Spider-Man within range of a record The Force Awakens has held since 2015. Oscar-winning visual-effects pioneer Phil Tippett has closed his Berkeley-based Tippett Studio after approximately 40 years in operation following bankruptcy. A liquidation sale held August 28-30 included props, models, cameras, production equipment and memorabilia connected to work on Star Wars, Jurassic Park, RoboCop and Starship Troopers.

Tippett’s fingerprints are on some of the images that taught generations how movie creatures were supposed to move. His work stretched from stop-motion into the digital-effects era, making his career part of the bridge between the handcrafted techniques of earlier effects filmmaking and the computer-generated systems that eventually transformed the industry.

The studio closing is therefore more than another effects company disappearing. Physical pieces of that history are now being dispersed through an auction because the business that created them could no longer continue operating. That is a difficult ending for a studio whose work helped make impossible creatures feel tangible long before audiences stopped wondering how the trick was accomplished.

New Girl Reunion Talk Gets Shut Down

New Girl creator Liz Meriwether says there are currently no scripts or concrete plans for a reunion despite recent comments from Max Greenfield suggesting that he had read material for one. Meriwether said she has discussed the possibility with the cast but made clear that no reunion project is currently moving forward.

Forty-five additional Xbox titles have received handheld classifications, with 25 becoming officially handheld optimized and another 20 classified as handheld compatible. Upcoming games including Fable and Neon Abyss 2 are part of the latest group.

Microsoft’s handheld strategy becomes more useful as these labels move beyond older catalog titles and begin appearing on major upcoming releases. Players need to know whether a PC game technically launches on portable hardware and whether it has actually been designed to function comfortably on a smaller screen with controller inputs.

Fable receiving optimization this far ahead of launch suggests handheld support is becoming part of development planning rather than something addressed after release. That matters if Xbox intends portable Windows gaming to become a meaningful part of its broader ecosystem rather than another niche hardware category.

Gamescom Closes the Books on 2026

Gamescom concluded Sunday in Cologne after a week that included Opening Night Live, multiple Xbox broadcasts, the Future Games Show, Awesome Indies, Gamescom Awards and Games Done Quick’s European debut. The final Future Games Show presentation revisited major titles from throughout the event, including Gears of War: E-Day, Metro 2039 and Fable.

The week provided the usual mixture of major franchise announcements and games that barely existed in the broader conversation before arriving in Cologne. Alien: Isolation 2, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Witcher projects, Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Gears of War: E-Day all leave with greater expectations than they carried into the event.

Now the marketing showcase gives way to the less controlled part of the cycle. Release dates are approaching, previews will turn into reviews, and games that looked spectacular in carefully selected demonstrations eventually have to survive thousands of players doing things developers never anticipated.
