Independent wrestling is full of people chasing an opportunity. Thugnificent decided a long time ago he would rather create his own.

The reigning IZW 3D Sports Fighting Champion joins PC Tunney for the first edition of the Chairshot Indy Spotlight, giving fans a look at a career built on considerably more than what happens between the ropes.

Thugnificent wrestles. He makes his own gear. He creates gear for other wrestlers. He records music. He promotes himself. And, depending on who you ask—or more specifically, whether you ask him—he still runs IZW.

With Psycho Circus 4 coming to Bull Shooters in Phoenix on August 22, Thugnificent has plenty happening in the present. But his conversation with Tunney also shows exactly how someone goes from being a kid obsessed with wrestling to building a place for himself in the business.

From The Rock To The Wrestling Ring

Every wrestling fan has that moment. For Thugnificent, The Rock helped create it.

His fandom grew through watching wrestling and playing games that became staples for an entire generation of fans, including WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain and the SmackDown vs. Raw series.

But there were signs early on that Thugnificent wasn’t interested in simply watching wrestling.

Before there were championships and wrestling gear, there were stuffed animals being turned into characters and placed into wrestling storylines. Backyard wrestling followed. Then amateur wrestling in eighth grade.

Eventually, fantasy started turning into something real. More than a decade later, Thugnificent isn’t pretending to be a professional wrestler anymore. He’s built a career as one…and he built a lot of it himself.

There isn’t much uncertainty when Thugnificent talks about his position in IZW. Bryce Saturn may have the heavyweight championship, but Thugnificent still believes IZW belongs to him.

Most wrestlers order their gear. Thugnificent learned how to make his.

What started as another necessity eventually became another part of his wrestling identity. He taught himself how to sew, learned how different fabrics behave, and figured out the frustrating little details that separate wrestling gear that looks good from wrestling gear that can actually survive a match.

A design can be perfect on paper and still become a disaster once someone starts running, bumping, sweating, stretching, and throwing themselves around a wrestling ring.

Thugnificent learned those lessons through experience. Eventually, he wasn’t only creating his own looks. He started making gear, masks, and coordinated designs for other wrestlers as well.

It’s a part of professional wrestling fans don’t always think about. The finished product walks through the curtain, but someone had to create that finished product first. For Thugnificent, sometimes that person is the wrestler himself.

Because apparently wrestling and gear design weren’t enough. Music has become another outlet for Thugnificent’s personality, including rap battles, diss tracks, albums, and the online content that helps extend the character beyond whatever happens during an IZW event.

It’s also another example of something that runs throughout his entire story. If Thugnificent has an idea, his first instinct isn’t necessarily to find somebody who can make it happen. It’s to figure out how to do it.

That’s a valuable mentality anywhere in wrestling, but especially on the independent scene where performers frequently don’t have an entire production department, costume team, marketing staff, or record label waiting behind the curtain.

Sometimes the person responsible for making you interesting is you. Thugnificent figured that out early.

The Independent Wrestling Hustle

That’s ultimately what makes Thugnificent a fitting first subject for the Chairshot Indy Spotlight. The independent wrestling scene isn’t just a smaller version of WWE or AEW. It’s its own ecosystem.

The wrestlers who thrive in it often become performers, promoters, marketers, designers, editors, salespeople, and entrepreneurs at the same time. You learn what you need because nobody is guaranteed to do it for you.

Thugnificent’s career represents that mentality almost perfectly. The championship matters. The matches matter. Psycho Circus 4 matters.

But so does everything that happened before Thugnificent ever walked through the curtain wearing gear he made himself, performing as a character he developed himself, and promoting a career he continues to shape himself.
