Breece Hall Suffers Groin Injury at Jets Practice

New York Jets running back Breece Hall left Monday’s practice with a groin injury after catching a pass from Geno Smith during a red-zone period and going to the ground without contact. Head coach Aaron Glenn said Hall will undergo imaging but indicated afterward that he did not initially believe the injury was serious.

That final sentence is the encouraging part. Hall is coming off his first 1,000-yard rushing season and recently signed a three-year extension, so the Jets have absolutely no reason to test the limits of a groin problem in August.

Braelon Allen is also back after his own significant knee injury and has looked impressive during camp.

The Jets can survive Hall missing preseason work. What they cannot afford is turning a manageable August issue into something that follows him into September.

Saints Expect Jordyn Tyson to Miss Around Two Months

New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is expected to miss approximately two months because of the hamstring injury he suffered last week. The No. 8 overall pick could begin the regular season on injured reserve, although the injury is reportedly unrelated to the hamstring issues he experienced during his final college season at Arizona State.

That timetable changes this from preseason caution to a legitimate regular-season problem. New Orleans drafted Tyson eighth overall because it expected him to become an immediate part of the passing game.

If the two-month estimate holds, the Saints may be looking at an October debut instead. The encouraging piece is that doctors reportedly view this as a new injury rather than a continuation of the problem that already followed Tyson out of college.

The frustrating part is that New Orleans will now begin learning how its offense functions without one of its biggest offseason additions.

Von Miller’s Cowboys Contract Comes Into Focus

Von Miller’s agreement with the Dallas Cowboys is a one-year contract worth $5.5 million with incentives that can push the total value to $7.5 million. The two-time Super Bowl champion is returning to his home state for his 15th NFL season and will be eased into practice rather than immediately thrown into full team work.

The money makes this even easier to understand from Dallas’ perspective. Miller does not need to become prime Von Miller again for a $5.5 million investment to work.

He needs to provide situational pressure, veteran leadership and enough juice off the edge that opposing offenses cannot completely focus elsewhere.

Dallas has spent the offseason rebuilding a defense that desperately needed it. Miller is another calculated bet that reputation plus remaining ability can produce something valuable.

Keenan Allen Signs With Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Colts are signing veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen to a one-year deal worth up to $8.32 million. The six-time Pro Bowler gives Indianapolis another experienced receiving option as the Colts continue preparing an offense that includes Anthony Richardson at quarterback in a supportive role.

This feels like one of those signings that makes considerably more sense in August than it would have in March. Allen does not have to be treated as the long-term centerpiece of anything.

He can become a professional third-down target who understands spacing, leverage and how to make himself available when a quarterback needs an easy completion. For Richardson, that matters. Young quarterbacks benefit from explosive weapons. They also benefit from receivers who simply know where they are supposed to be.

Christian McCaffrey Dealing With Tightness

San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey is missing practice because of what the 49ers are describing as tightness, but NFL Network reported Monday that the issue is not believed to be serious. The injury is legitimate and is not related to any contract situation.

Nobody in San Francisco needs to be reminded what happens when McCaffrey carries an injury into a season. That makes extreme caution the correct response.

The 49ers already know what their offense looks like with a healthy McCaffrey. August should be about finding out what everyone else can do—not squeezing another handful of training-camp carries out of one of the most important players on the roster.

Jake Moody Released by Washington

The Washington Commanders are releasing kicker Jake Moody, clearing the way for Drew Stevens to win the starting job. Moody made a 29-yard field goal off the upright in Sunday’s preseason game and converted his only extra-point attempt, but Washington elected to end the competition following continued inconsistency in camp.

Kicker battles are some of the strangest competitions in football because the sample size can remain tiny right up until somebody loses a job.

Moody’s name and draft history were never going to guarantee him anything. Washington decided it trusts Stevens more. That is the entire job description.

Hall’s injury may ultimately be minor. Tyson’s already isn’t. McCaffrey’s situation deserves caution precisely because San Francisco understands the consequences of getting it wrong.
