Elsewhere, Buffalo is dealing with another injury to Keon Coleman and Green Bay is finally getting Josh Jacobs back onto the practice field.

Tyler Biadasz Carted Off Chargers Practice

Los Angeles Chargers starting center Tyler Biadasz was carted off Tuesday after suffering a left-leg injury during an 11-on-11 period against the San Francisco 49ers. Biadasz was unable to put weight on the leg after 49ers defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez fell across his lower body. The severity of the injury was still unknown Tuesday night. Rookie Jake Slaughter replaced him at center.

That is exactly the kind of August scene that makes every coach question how much joint-practice work is worth. The Chargers signed Biadasz to a three-year, $30 million deal specifically to stabilize the middle of the offensive line in front of Justin Herbert.

If this turns into a significant absence, Los Angeles is suddenly asking a rookie to replace an established veteran at one of the positions where communication matters most.

The diagnosis is now considerably more important than anything else the Chargers accomplished Tuesday.

Najee Harris Expected to Join the Giants

Veteran running back Najee Harris is expected to sign a one-year contract with the New York Giants, adding another experienced option to a backfield that already includes Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Cam Skattebo.

This feels less like the Giants searching for a new featured back and more like adding insurance before September forces the issue. Harris has spent his entire career proving he can handle NFL volume.

That does not mean New York needs to hand him 20 carries every Sunday. It means the Giants now have somebody who can absorb that workload if injuries or performance require it.

For an offense that cannot afford to spend another year searching for answers every week, dependable depth has value.

Jets Expect Breece Hall to Be Ready for Week 1

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Breece Hall is expected to be ready for Week 1 after the running back suffered a groin injury during Monday’s practice. Hall underwent further evaluation after leaving the field, but New York does not currently expect the issue to threaten his regular-season availability.

That takes yesterday’s biggest Jets concern and turns the volume down considerably. There is still no reason for Hall to do much in August.

The Jets already know who their starting running back is. Braelon Allen needs the additional work more, and New York gains nothing by testing Hall’s groin before the games count. “Ready for Week 1” is the only timetable that really matters.

Keon Coleman Dealing With Foot and Toe Sprain

Buffalo Bills receiver Keon Coleman suffered a sprained foot and toe during Saturday’s preseason game against Carolina. The injury is not believed to be season-threatening, but Coleman’s immediate practice availability is uncertain.

Buffalo already knows what Coleman can do in the offense. That makes this another case where caution should win immediately. The Bills do not need their receiver proving he can fight through an August foot injury. They need him healthy when Josh Allen starts throwing passes that actually affect the standings.

Josh Jacobs Returns to Packers Practice

Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs returned to practice Tuesday after missing time with a groin injury. The Packers had previously held Jacobs out of team work while allowing MarShawn Lloyd and the rest of the backfield to absorb additional repetitions.

This is exactly how Green Bay wanted this progression to go. Jacobs misses meaningless preseason work. The younger backs get extra opportunities. Jacobs returns before the regular season is close enough for anybody to panic.

If Green Bay can maintain that timeline, the injury becomes something the Packers managed rather than something that actually affected their season.

Bears Rookie Kyle Monangai Is Week-to-Week

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai is considered week-to-week with a knee injury. The second-year back has been competing for work in Chicago’s backfield during training camp and preseason.

“Week-to-week” is one of those wonderfully vague NFL phrases that can mean almost anything. For Monangai, the real problem is timing. Established starters can afford to lose August repetitions.

Players competing for touches and roster positioning cannot. Every practice he misses becomes another opportunity for somebody else to make the coaching staff comfortable without him.

Falcons Sign Za’Darius Smith

The Atlanta Falcons signed veteran defensive end Za’Darius Smith to a one-year deal reportedly worth $6 million with incentives that can push the contract to $8 million. Smith previously played under Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski in Cleveland. Atlanta enters the season without Jalon Walker, who is out for the year, while James Pearce Jr. will serve an eight-game suspension.

This is a much different destination than the Cleveland return that had been discussed earlier. Atlanta has an immediate need. Smith has an existing relationship with Stefanski. And the Falcons are not asking him to become the future of the defensive line.

They need him to help bridge a problem that already exists in the present. At this point in his career, that is exactly the kind of role that makes sense.
