Wednesday was another rough day for NFL medical staffs.

New Orleans learned Alvin Kamara could miss the start of the regular season, Houston lost an important receiver for the entire year, and Indianapolis added Tyler Warren to the growing list of August injury concerns.

Seattle, meanwhile, made one of the day’s most recognizable veteran additions.

Alvin Kamara Expected to Miss At Least a Month

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is expected to miss at least one month after suffering a sprained MCL during Tuesday’s practice. The timetable puts Kamara’s availability for the beginning of the regular season in jeopardy, with offseason addition Travis Etienne positioned to receive the bulk of the immediate backfield work.

This is exactly why New Orleans adding Etienne mattered. Kamara remains one of the most important players in the Saints offense, but they now have somebody with legitimate starting experience instead of immediately asking a depth back to replace him.

The larger question is not whether Kamara can return. It is whether New Orleans can avoid rushing him back simply because Week 1 arrives before his knee is completely ready.

An MCL injury in August should be treated like an August injury. September panic cannot be allowed to turn it into an October problem.

Texans Lose Jayden Higgins for the Season

Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins will miss the entire 2026 season after suffering a torn ACL during Tuesday’s joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders. Higgins caught 41 passes for 525 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie last season while starting 10 games.

This one hurts considerably more than a normal preseason injury. Higgins was no longer a developmental player Houston was hoping might contribute.

He had already contributed. The Texans now lose an ascending receiver before he gets the chance to take the expected second-year jump.

August injuries always create opportunities for somebody else. That does not make losing a 23-year-old receiver for an entire season any less brutal.

Trevon Diggs Signs With Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks signed former Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs to a one-year contract on Wednesday, adding another experienced defensive back while Seattle continues dealing with uncertainty surrounding Terrion Arnold.

Diggs comes with a résumé and obvious ball-production ability. He also comes with enough recent injury history that Seattle should not need him to become the player Dallas once built its secondary around.

That is what makes the move interesting. If Diggs becomes even a strong rotational or matchup corner, Seattle just found useful veteran talent in late August.

If he looks closer to his previous Pro Bowl form, the Seahawks may have found significantly more.

Tyler Warren Leaves Colts Practice

Indianapolis Colts tight end Tyler Warren left Wednesday’s practice with an apparent groin injury, according to head coach Shane Steichen. The severity was not immediately known.

This is another situation where the calendar should dictate the response. Warren does not need another training-camp rep badly enough to make a groin problem worse. The Colts already entered Wednesday with Keenan Allen officially joining the offense.

Adding weapons only matters if the ones already on the roster reach September healthy. Until Indianapolis knows exactly what Warren is dealing with, caution should win.

Vita Vea Gets a $30 Million Extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to a one-year, $30 million extension with defensive tackle Vita Vea, resolving his contract situation even though Vea remains sidelined by a back injury.

Thirty million dollars for one additional year tells you how Tampa views the center of its defense. Vea is not a flashy edge rusher generating weekly highlight clips. He is the enormous reason other people get favorable situations around him. The Buccaneers decided preserving that infrastructure was worth paying for. Now the only remaining issue is getting him healthy enough for the contract to matter on Sundays.

Bo Nix Will Make His Preseason Debut

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is expected to play approximately 14 snaps Friday against Green Bay, which would be his first live game action since suffering an ankle injury during last season’s AFC Divisional Round.

Fourteen snaps is almost the perfect August number. Enough to get hit. Enough to move inside an actual pocket. Enough to remember that practice jerseys do not tackle. And then get him out.

Denver does not need to evaluate whether Nix is the quarterback. The Broncos need him comfortable and healthy when the games start counting.

The preseason is supposed to help teams figure out what they have. Sometimes it tells them what they have lost instead.

Houston now has to replace Higgins for an entire season. New Orleans has to prepare for meaningful football without Kamara. Indianapolis waits on Warren.

Meanwhile, Seattle and Tampa made moves with September clearly in mind.

At this stage of August, protecting the roster is becoming every bit as important as improving it.
