The Browns have chosen Deshaun Watson for Week 1, while Houston continued rebuilding its receiver room by trading for Kayshon Boutte and New Orleans made another move at running back while Alvin Kamara recovers.

Deshaun Watson Wins Cleveland’s Starting Job

The Cleveland Browns will start Deshaun Watson over Shedeur Sanders in Week 1 against Jacksonville, ending an offseason-long quarterback competition. Watson completed 16 of 27 passes for 162 yards with no touchdowns and one interception during the preseason, while Sanders finished 15 of 22 for 153 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Browns are making the less exciting decision. That does not automatically make it the wrong one.

Sanders showed enough during the preseason to make Cleveland think about this considerably harder than most people expected. Watson, however, remains the veteran with significantly more NFL experience and will receive the first opportunity under Todd Monken.

The important phrase is “first opportunity.” If Watson resembles the quarterback Cleveland has seen since acquiring him rather than the quarterback Houston once had, the crowd will not need much convincing to start asking for Sanders.

Texans Trade for Kayshon Boutte

Houston acquired wide receiver Kayshon Boutte from New England in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick. Boutte caught 76 passes for 1,140 yards and nine touchdowns over the past two seasons with Drake Maye at quarterback and now joins a Texans receiver room that recently lost Jayden Higgins to a season-ending ACL injury.

Houston has gone from emergency shopping to legitimately rebuilding the room. Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones provided experienced depth. Boutte potentially provides considerably more.

He is only 24, already has experience producing in an NFL offense and does not need to be treated as a temporary replacement who disappears once everybody gets healthy. The Higgins injury forced Houston into the receiver market. The Texans may have found somebody useful well beyond 2026.

Saints Acquire Zamir White

The New Orleans Saints acquired running back Zamir White from San Francisco in exchange for veteran linebacker Deion Jones. White had signed with the 49ers earlier this month after previously spending four seasons with Las Vegas.

This trade makes considerably more sense when Alvin Kamara’s knee injury is sitting next to it.

New Orleans already added Travis Etienne during the offseason, but Kamara potentially missing the beginning of the season leaves the Saints needing another NFL-caliber runner.

White does not need to become the centerpiece. He needs to keep New Orleans from asking Etienne to become a 25-touch player simply because Kamara is unavailable. For San Francisco, Jones provides veteran defensive depth and reunites with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Sometimes August trades really are that practical.

Josh Sweat Returns for Arizona

The Arizona Cardinals activated edge rusher Josh Sweat from the physically unable to perform list Monday. Sweat had been sidelined throughout training camp by a knee injury after recording a career-high 12 sacks during his first season in Arizona.

That is one of the better pieces of August news Arizona could receive. Sweat was not simply productive last season. He was one of the few consistent reasons opposing quarterbacks had to worry about the Cardinals defense.

Arizona does not need him proving anything in the final preseason game. Get him comfortable. Get him through practice. Then unleash him when the games count.

Falcons Finally Split First-Team Reps Between Penix and Tua

Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa split Atlanta’s first-team quarterback repetitions Monday after Penix received full medical clearance over the weekend. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has not decided whether Penix will play Friday against Miami, although Atlanta’s other starters are expected to see action.

Now the competition is real. Everything before Monday came with an asterisk because Penix could not fully participate. That limitation is gone.

Tua has spent the summer establishing himself in Atlanta’s offense while Penix rehabilitated his knee. Penix now has a very short window to demonstrate that the starting job should still belong to him. This may be the most interesting quarterback competition remaining in football.

Panthers Expect Chuba Hubbard for Week 1

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales said running back Chuba Hubbard is expected to be available for Week 1 despite missing the preseason with a hamstring injury.

That is exactly how Carolina should handle this. Hubbard does not need preseason carries. He needs a healthy hamstring.

Running backs have enough unavoidable contact waiting for them once September arrives without manufacturing another fifteen collisions in August. If Carolina gets Hubbard to Week 1 at full strength, the preseason accomplished its job.

C.J. Uzomah Retires After 10 Seasons

Veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah announced his retirement Monday after ten NFL seasons. Uzomah spent seven seasons with Cincinnati and finishes his career with 192 receptions for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns. Uzomah will probably be remembered most for Cincinnati’s run to Super Bowl LVI.

That feels appropriate. Most NFL careers do not end in Canton. They are defined by the moments when a player mattered to a team and its fans. Uzomah mattered during one of the most memorable stretches in Bengals history. Ten NFL seasons is a hell of a career.

Some will land elsewhere, some will reach practice squads, byt some have played their final NFL snap without knowing it yet. Monday already gave us trades, releases and one retirement. The volume only increases from here.
