Cowboys Trade for Broderick Jones

This is considerably more than a late-August depth move because Dallas paid meaningful draft capital for a 25-year-old former first-round selection. The Cowboys clearly believe there is still something to unlock in Jones, whose versatility gives them immediate value even if he initially settles into a swing-tackle role.

The price will look expensive if Jones becomes only a backup. If a change of scenery turns him into the player Pittsburgh originally thought it drafted, Dallas may have added a long-term offensive-line piece at a point on the calendar when most teams are simply trimming their rosters.

Jaguars Acquire Quinn Ewers

Jacksonville acquired quarterback Quinn Ewers from Miami in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round pick. Ewers appeared in four games and made three starts for the Dolphins last season, completing 66.3 percent of his passes for 622 yards and three touchdowns.

Backup quarterback rarely attracts much attention until a starter gets hurt, which helps explain why Jacksonville did not wait to see whether Ewers reached waivers. The Jaguars were willing to give up a future draft pick because they preferred certainty behind Trevor Lawrence.

Ewers also gets a useful opportunity without immediately being asked to carry a franchise. He can continue developing in a defined backup role while Jacksonville gets a young quarterback with recent starting experience already on the roster.

Panthers Add Bobby Okereke

Carolina agreed to terms with veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke as the Panthers continued strengthening their linebacker room before the regular season. Okereke spent the past three years with the Giants after beginning his career in Indianapolis.

The attraction here is reliability more than upside. Okereke has spent years functioning as a full-time NFL linebacker, and Carolina enters the season knowing exactly what kind of player it is adding rather than hoping a developmental option becomes ready quickly.

Late-August veteran additions often work best when the role is uncomplicated. Okereke can provide experience, tackling and defensive leadership without needing the Panthers to redesign the defense around him.

Patriots Trade for Corey Kiner

New England acquired running back Corey Kiner from Arizona in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round draft pick and released Hassan Haskins in the corresponding move. Kiner rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns during the preseason after appearing in four games for Arizona late last season.

The Patriots could have waited to see whether Kiner reached the waiver wire, but the small draft investment guaranteed they would not have to compete with another team for him. That suggests New England sees a specific role for Kiner behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.

The move also demonstrates how quickly roster competitions can change during cutdown weekend. Haskins had been fighting for the same depth job, and one trade effectively ended that competition before the final roster was submitted.

Bills Release Mecole Hardman

Buffalo released veteran receiver and return specialist Mecole Hardman as part of its roster reductions Saturday. The Bills also moved on from veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky while continuing to shape their initial 53-man roster.

Hardman’s clearest path onto Buffalo’s roster always involved special teams and creating explosive plays in a limited offensive role. That approach makes sense for a contender with an established quarterback and offensive identity. Depth along the line becomes much harder to find once the season starts, so Kansas City is using cutdown weekend to address the problem before injuries force it to.
