The NFL’s roster deadline arrived Sunday, but the biggest transaction had nothing to do with a player being cut.

Aaron Donald is coming back.

After more than two years away from football, one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history is rejoining a Rams defense that already added Myles Garrett this offseason. Elsewhere, Tampa Bay handed its backup quarterback job to an undrafted rookie, Miami completely rebuilt the depth chart behind Malik Willis and Cleveland made an unexpected move with Dillon Gabriel.

Aaron Donald Comes Out of Retirement

Aaron Donald is ending his retirement and returning to the Los Angeles Rams after last playing during the 2023 season. Donald agreed to a one-year deal worth $20 million with incentives that can push the value to $30 million, putting the three-time Defensive Player of the Year on the same defensive front as reigning DPOY Myles Garrett.

Donald retired while he was still one of football’s dominant interior defenders, which makes this different from a veteran simply deciding he wants one more season. The real question is how much of the player who accumulated 111 sacks, 10 Pro Bowls and eight first-team All-Pro selections remains after more than two years away.

The Rams do not need Donald to reproduce his absolute peak because Garrett changes the equation. Offensive lines now have to account for two players who have combined to win five Defensive Player of the Year awards, along with a defensive front that already includes Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske. Donald returning at even 80 percent of what he once was could dramatically change what Los Angeles is capable of defensively.

Jalon Daniels Wins Tampa Bay’s Backup Quarterback Job

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released veteran quarterback Jake Browning on Sunday, leaving undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels as Baker Mayfield’s backup. Daniels completed 27 of 44 preseason passes for 239 yards and a touchdown while adding 37 rushing yards and another score after signing out of Kansas with a $25,000 bonus.

Tampa Bay entered camp expecting Browning to provide experienced insurance behind Mayfield. Daniels changed that plan by playing well enough that keeping the veteran simply because he was the safer option became difficult to justify.

There is obviously more risk involved if Mayfield misses meaningful time, but Daniels gives the offense a different athletic dimension and earned the opportunity rather than receiving it as a developmental favor. An undrafted rookie beating out an established veteran for QB2 is one of the better examples of a training-camp competition actually producing consequences.

Dolphins Trade for Kyle McCord

The Miami Dolphins acquired quarterback Kyle McCord from Green Bay for a 2028 sixth-round pick one day after trading Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville. Miami also waived Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski, leaving McCord as the expected backup to Malik Willis.

Miami essentially turned Ewers into McCord without changing its number of 2028 draft picks, but the more interesting part is how aggressively the Dolphins reshaped the quarterback room behind Willis. Three backup options from Saturday were gone by Sunday, and McCord arrived without having taken a practice rep in Miami’s offense.

The trade makes more sense when the organizational connections are considered. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley both came from Green Bay, while Miami passing-game coordinator Kevin Patullo previously worked with McCord in Philadelphia. The Dolphins are betting that familiarity can accelerate a transition that normally would be uncomfortable this close to Week 1.

Dillon Gabriel Opens the Season on Injured Reserve

The Cleveland Browns placed quarterback Dillon Gabriel on injured reserve with a back injury, making him unavailable for at least the first four games. Deshaun Watson will start the season with Shedeur Sanders and rookie Taylen Green also on Cleveland’s initial 53-man roster.

The injury was unexpected because Gabriel had just completed 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns in Cleveland’s preseason finale. Back pain developed afterward, and an MRI ultimately revealed an issue significant enough for the Browns to use injured reserve.

Cleveland spent much of the summer dealing with questions about how many quarterbacks could realistically survive the final cut. The answer became clearer through injury rather than evaluation, buying the Browns at least four weeks before another decision involving Gabriel becomes necessary.

Odell Beckham Jr. Completes His Giants Comeback

Odell Beckham Jr. made the New York Giants initial 53-man roster after returning to the franchise where his NFL career began. Beckham strengthened his case during the preseason finale with three catches for 53 yards.

The reunion always carried more emotional appeal than certainty. Beckham is no longer the receiver who produced three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, and the Giants could not afford to keep him simply because seeing No. 13 in blue again felt familiar.

Making the roster means he convinced New York there is still a football role available. If Beckham can contribute as a rotational receiver while providing another experienced option around the Giants’ younger pass catchers, the reunion can become more meaningful than nostalgia.

Transactions as NFL Rosters Reach 53

Sunday was the league-wide deadline for teams to reduce their rosters to 53 players, producing hundreds of releases, trades and reserve-list moves. Waiver claims and practice-squad construction now become the next stage of roster building.

The initial 53-man roster is never actually final, and Monday’s waiver claims will immediately change some of the teams announced Sunday. What cutdown day does provide is the clearest indication yet of which summer evaluations became genuine organizational decisions.

Tampa Bay trusted an undrafted rookie over an experienced backup, Miami replaced nearly its entire reserve quarterback room in 24 hours, and Cleveland found temporary relief from its crowded quarterback situation through an injury nobody expected. Then Los Angeles changed the entire complexion of its defense by bringing back one of the best defensive players ever to play the position.

The preseason is officially finished. The decisions being made now are about winning games that count.
