AEW’s Continental Challenge Cup reaches the quarterfinals, La Parka advances toward Roman Reigns, Hiroshi Tenzan retires and Yuya Uemura meets Ryohei Oiwa in the G1 final.

Saturday provided plenty of movement outside WWE’s main roster. AEW completed the opening round of its Continental Challenge Cup, AAA moved another wrestler closer to a World Heavyweight Championship opportunity against Roman Reigns, and New Japan eliminated its reigning champion from the G1 Climax, and Sunday brings one of wrestling’s biggest tournament finals.

Kyle O’Reilly, Nigel McGuinness and Hechicero Advance in the C3

Kyle O’Reilly defeated longtime partner Roderick Strong, Nigel McGuinness defeated Katsuyori Shibata and Hechicero defeated fellow Don Callis Family member Brian Cage on Saturday’s AEW Collision to complete the first round of the Continental Challenge Cup. O’Reilly, McGuinness and Hechicero join Jon Moxley, Jay White and the other first-round winners in the quarterfinals beginning Wednesday on Dynamite.

O’Reilly-Strong was the smartest match of the three because AEW did not need a betrayal to make teammates fighting matter.

They beat each other up, O’Reilly won, Strong was frustrated—and then they eventually embraced.

Tournament wrestling works best when advancement itself is enough motivation. AEW has several built-in relationships inside this bracket, and the company does not need to turn every one of them into a faction breakup.

Hangman, Bandido and Brody King Retain the Trios Titles

AEW World Trios Champions Hangman Page, Bandido and Brody King successfully defended against Jay Lethal, Blake Christian and Lee Johnson to open Collision. The Demand attacked the champions afterward, while Mercedes Moné later defeated Zayda Steel and continued attacking her until AEW Women’s World Champion Willow Nightingale made the save.

The Trios Champions are beginning to feel less like three singles wrestlers temporarily holding belts together and more like an actual unit.

That matters because Hangman remains one of AEW’s biggest singles stars. If the championships constantly feel like something he is carrying until his next World Title program, the division loses.

The Demand attacking afterward gives the champions an actual team rivalry—and lets Hangman’s singles history remain part of the character without swallowing the belts.

La Parka Advances Toward a Roman Reigns Title Shot

La Parka defeated Psycho Clown in AAA’s World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contender Tournament after a mysterious attacker targeted Psycho Clown. La Parka now advances to face Penta, with the eventual tournament winner earning a World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns when Raw comes to Mexico City on September 14. Rey Fénix also successfully defended the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship against Noisy Boy.

Penta against La Parka is where this tournament becomes especially interesting. The prize is not simply an AAA opportunity. WWE has attached Roman Reigns—and a major Mexico City Raw—to the end of it.

That means every tournament match now exists simultaneously inside AAA’s stories and WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship picture.

This is exactly the sort of crossover value WWE’s relationship with AAA should create.

Penta Gets an Offer From Los Perros del Mal

Los Perros del Mal offered Penta a place in the group Saturday as he prepares for the possibility of eventually facing Roman Reigns and The Bloodline. Penta declined because of his distrust of newer members Karmen Petrovic and Bronco Nima, leading to a challenge for next week: if Nima defeats Penta, Penta must join the faction and acknowledge him as family; if Penta wins, he remains independent.

That is a much better use of crossover storytelling than simply putting WWE wrestlers onto an AAA poster.

Roman having The Bloodline gives AAA a logical reason to ask who Penta would bring into battle with him.

Suddenly Los Perros del Mal are not just involved because somebody wanted another faction angle—they could become strategically important if Penta survives the tournament.

There are several steps before Reigns-Penta becomes real, but AAA is already making the potential destination feel larger.

Yuya Uemura and Ryohei Oiwa Reach the G1 Climax Final

Yuya Uemura defeated reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji and Ryohei Oiwa defeated Callum Newman in Saturday’s G1 Climax 36 semifinals at Ryogoku Sumo Hall. Uemura and Oiwa will meet Sunday in the tournament final, guaranteeing a first-time G1 winner. Saturday also marked the final match of Hiroyoshi Tenzan’s career, with longtime partner and rival Satoshi Kojima defeating him.

Uemura beating the World Champion changes the equation – he already owns a victory over Tsuji.

Oiwa now gets the opportunity to deny him the tournament and establish his own claim at the same time. New Japan wanted this G1 to create somebody new at the top. By Sunday afternoon, it will have done exactly that.

Hiroyoshi Tenzan Ends His In-Ring Career

Hiroyoshi Tenzan wrestled the final match of his career Saturday, losing to longtime TenKoji partner Satoshi Kojima at Ryogoku Sumo Hall. Tenzan closes a career that included four IWGP Heavyweight Championship reigns, three G1 Climax victories and one of New Japan’s most enduring tag-team partnerships alongside Kojima.

Ending against Kojima was the only finish that really made sense. Tenzan’s career stretches across multiple eras of New Japan, including periods when the company was nowhere near its modern international profile.

For newer fans, Sunday’s G1 final represents where New Japan is trying to go…whole Tenzan’s retirement Saturday was a reminder of the people who carried it here.

AEW Collision Results — August 15, 2026

Saturday’s Collision completed the opening round of the Continental Challenge Cup and featured an AEW World Trios Championship defense.

AEW used the C3 to create meaningful matches between people who normally stand beside each other. AAA used its tournament to connect Penta and La Parka directly to Roman Reigns. New Japan used the G1 to guarantee somebody new leaves Ryogoku fundamentally more important than he entered it.

Sunday is for Uemura and Oiwa – one of them is about to add his name to one of wrestling’s most important lists, and immediately change New Japan’s championship picture in the process.
