Jeff Hardy and Nic Nemeth have signed the contract for their upcoming TNA World Championship match, but the challenger refused to give Nemeth the confrontation he wanted.

Buddy Matthews has also confirmed that he is finally cleared to compete, while WWE prepares for its first SmackDown after SummerSlam with Jade Cargill facing Charlotte Flair.

Jeff Hardy and Nic Nemeth Sign TNA World Title Contract

Jeff Hardy and TNA World Champion Nic Nemeth signed the contract for their upcoming championship match during Thursday’s Impact.

Nemeth attempted to provoke Hardy throughout the backstage segment, declaring that defeating him would cement Nemeth as the greatest. Hardy remained focused on his artwork, signed the agreement and never responded verbally.

Xia Brookside retained the TNA Knockouts Championship against NXT’s Wendy Choo. Brookside escaped Choo’s chokehold, used the ropes to stun the challenger and finished the match with a lifting DDT. Elayna Black entered afterward and confronted the champion.

Heather by Elegance defeated the departing Mara Sadè to advance to the Knockouts Television Championship Tournament semifinals, where she will face Jada Stone.

Mustafa Ali also challenged International Champion Jason Hotch to a steel-cage match at Lockdown after inserting himself into Hotch’s family celebration. Moose and Frankie Kazarian agreed to meet inside the cage under escape rules.

Hardy’s silence prevented Nemeth from controlling the segment. The champion wanted anger, doubt or evidence that his words had affected the challenger. Hardy gave him a signature and nothing else.

Brookside’s victory also strengthens her reign after TNA spent several weeks presenting the possibility that an NXT wrestler could leave with the championship. Black now appears positioned as the next challenger, although TNA has not officially announced their match.

The Lockdown card is also beginning to reflect the event’s identity. Ali against Hotch and Moose against Kazarian both involve personal issues that can be advanced by placing the wrestlers inside a cage rather than simply adding a stipulation to an ordinary rivalry.

Buddy Matthews Cleared After Lengthy Recovery

Buddy Matthews has indicated that he has received medical clearance following a nearly 18-month absence from regular competition.

Matthews suffered a severe ankle injury during his entrance before facing Kazuchika Okada at AEW Grand Slam Australia in February 2025. He completed the match but later required surgery after the injury proved more complicated than initially expected.

The former AEW World Trios Champion had previously teased that the necessary clearance had been signed and that only the timing of his return remained uncertain.

Matthews has not announced when he will reappear on AEW television, although he is scheduled to participate in World Series Wrestling’s Australian tour later this year.

The AEW landscape has changed considerably during Matthews’ absence. Malakai Black is gone, Brody King has found success alongside Bandido and Hangman Page, and Julia Hart has developed other alliances.

That uncertainty could benefit Matthews. AEW does not need to force him back into an old version of the House of Black simply because it is familiar.

He can return with an individual purpose, confront the wrestlers who moved forward without him or rebuild a group around a different identity. The most important step is ensuring his ankle can withstand regular matches after such a difficult recovery.

What to Watch on WWE SmackDown

Jade Cargill will face Charlotte Flair during Friday’s SmackDown from the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

Their rivalry intensified before SummerSlam when Flair repeatedly interfered in Cargill’s matches and attacked her arm. Both women later competed in the Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match, which Chelsea Green won.

Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk will address Kevin Owens’ return and victory in the SummerSlam No. 1 Contender’s Match. Owens returned from neck surgery to defeat Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor and Gunther, earning the next opportunity against Punk.

Green will also appear to explain her plans for the women’s division following her championship victory.

Cargill against Flair could easily have been saved for a premium live event. Placing it on SmackDown gives WWE an immediate attraction for the first Friday following SummerSlam, but the company must decide whether either wrestler can afford a decisive loss.

Punk and Owens carry the greater long-term importance. Both men have strong personalities, extensive histories outside WWE and an ability to make a championship rivalry feel personal without requiring elaborate circumstances.

Owens also presents Punk with a different challenge than Cody Rhodes. Rhodes pursued the championship as someone attempting to reclaim his place. Owens returned after fearing his career was over and immediately won the right to pursue the biggest prize available.

Green’s appearance should begin defining what the word “interim” means in practice. Rhea Ripley remains the recognized WWE Women’s Champion, but Green must receive legitimate programs and victories for her reign to matter before an eventual unification match.

Thursday’s Impact established TNA’s immediate championship direction. Hardy will challenge Nemeth, Brookside has another potential opponent waiting and Lockdown is gaining matches built around conflicts that belong inside a cage.

Matthews’ clearance gives AEW another experienced performer as it builds toward All In. The question is no longer whether he can return. It is whether AEW can find a role that reflects everything that changed while he was gone.

SmackDown now begins WWE’s next chapter after SummerSlam. Punk has a new challenger, Green has a division to lead and Cargill and Flair finally have the opportunity to settle a rivalry that has continued without producing a clear winner.
