The Grown Ass Man Podcast is back with Episode 3, and Greg DeMarco and Patrick O’Dowd continue proving that the best conversations are usually the ones that refuse to stay on schedule.

This week starts with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the surprisingly grown-up life lessons buried inside a superhero story. Greg and Patrick focus especially on Frank Castle telling Peter Parker that he cannot do life alone, that surviving everything by himself is not something anyone should aspire to, and that even the strongest people still need others around them. The conversation becomes less about superheroes and more about life itself, with Peter’s real opponent not necessarily being a villain, but the weight of everything he is trying to carry.

That discussion hits especially close to home as Greg talks about seeing the movie with his son and preparing to become an empty-nester when his daughter leaves for college in two weeks. Patrick brings plenty of family material of his own after returning from a cruise with his wife and son, although his trip apparently included far more karaoke fame and far fewer dead bodies than advertised.

Patrick explains how he became something of a cruise ship celebrity by singing karaoke and attracting a small group of enthusiastic college-aged fans. That leads Greg to question just how confident Patrick is about their ages, prompting the line that ultimately became the episode title: “God, I’m Hoping They’re Legal.”

The cruise stories only get more ridiculous from there. Patrick’s son accuses him of being a liar after one of their tours was supposedly going to include “bodies,” meaning actual dead bodies, only for none to appear. That disappointment turns into a running joke throughout the episode and produces another potential title: “This Cruise Was Built On A Web Of Lies.”

Greg also delivers his Grown Ass Moment of the Week, while the guys briefly touch on WWE SummerSlam before eventually making their way through all 12 possible episode titles they collected during the recording. Reviewing those titles becomes one of the funniest parts of the show, as Greg and Patrick are forced to retrace the strange path the conversation took and decide which throwaway line best represents the episode.

Episode 3 is positive, loose, thoughtful, and completely unwilling to follow the planned order. It is about Spider-Man, family, friendship, cruise ship karaoke, empty nests, false promises of dead bodies, and the realization that growing older does not mean figuring everything out alone. Sometimes it just means finding the right people to laugh about it with.
