Kit Connor is linked to Cyclops, GTA VI schedules an extended preview, Marvel Tōkon launches and Warner Bros. faces new pressure from its movie slate.

Marvel Studios may have found the leader of its next generation of X-Men, while Rockstar Games has scheduled the next major look at the most anticipated video game of the year.

A new Marvel fighting game has also arrived, and disappointing results from two franchise movies are creating more questions for Warner Bros.

It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for August 7, 2026!

Kit Connor Reportedly Eyed to Play Cyclops

Kit Connor is reportedly being lined up to play Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie.

The Heartstopper actor would join the MCU’s emerging mutant roster and potentially reunite with co-star Joe Locke, who previously entered the franchise as Billy Maximoff in Agatha All Along.

The new X-Men movie will be directed by Thunderbolts filmmaker Jake Schreier and is expected to begin the franchise’s next mutant era following Avengers: Secret Wars.

Cyclops is one of Marvel’s most important casting decisions. Wolverine may be the X-Men’s most recognizable individual character, but Scott Summers is traditionally the strategist responsible for turning a collection of powerful personalities into an effective team.

Connor would be a younger choice than previous live-action Cyclops actors James Marsden and Tye Sheridan. That could give Marvel enough time to let the character develop from a gifted but inexperienced mutant into the unquestioned leader the movies have rarely allowed him to become.

The larger question is whether Marvel will finally treat Cyclops as a central protagonist rather than the obstacle standing between Wolverine and Jean Grey. Casting the role carefully is only the first step.

GTA VI Extended Preview Scheduled for August 27

Rockstar Games will present an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI on August 27.

The presentation will become available to Netflix subscribers at 3 PM ET before streaming more broadly through Rockstar’s YouTube channel at 9 PM ET. The partnership gives Netflix a temporary window for one of gaming’s largest promotional events.

Grand Theft Auto VI remains scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a release date for a PC version.

Rockstar does not need to convince players that GTA VI is important. It needs to demonstrate that the game can satisfy expectations created by more than a decade of waiting and an enormous level of industry attention.

The Netflix arrangement is also worth watching. Game reveals traditionally belong to YouTube, Twitch and publisher-controlled events. Giving a streaming service early access suggests that major gaming announcements are becoming entertainment premieres rather than ordinary marketing drops.

August 27 should provide more than another cinematic trailer. With launch less than three months away, players need a clearer look at the open world, mission structure and systems that will separate GTA VI from an expanded version of GTA V.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Launches on PlayStation and PC

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched Thursday for PlayStation 5 and PC. The four-on-four tag-team fighting game was developed by Arc System Works in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games.

Its 20-character launch roster features reimagined versions of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Storm, Captain America, Doctor Doom, Iron Man, Deadpool, Blade and other Marvel heroes and villains.

The game also includes an Episode Mode presented through fully voiced motion comics. Its Deluxe and Ultimate editions include a Year 1 pass containing four additional characters and another playable stage.

Marvel has spent years trying to find another fighting game capable of generating the excitement once attached to the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. Partnering with the studio behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ gives Tōkon immediate credibility with dedicated fighting-game players.

The challenge will be reaching the wider Marvel audience. Recognizable characters create interest, but long-term success will depend on online stability, balanced competition and enough post-launch support to keep casual players involved after the initial novelty wears off.

The timing could also benefit the game. Marvel’s movie universe is approaching another major transition, while the X-Men are returning to the center of the company’s entertainment strategy. A fighting game capable of combining Avengers, mutants, street-level heroes and cosmic characters can take advantage of every corner of that resurgence.

Supergirl and Mortal Kombat II Weigh on Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported second-quarter revenue of $8.72 billion, falling below analyst expectations as its studio division experienced a 39 percent decline.

The company attributed part of the weakness to disappointing theatrical performances from Supergirl and Mortal Kombat II. Advertising revenue also fell, although the streaming business provided a brighter result as HBO Max helped produce a 10 percent increase in streaming revenue.

Warner Bros. Discovery is also attempting to complete a merger with Paramount while facing legal opposition in the United States.

These numbers matter beyond a single financial quarter. Warner Bros. controls DC, Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, HBO, Warner Bros. Games and several of entertainment’s most valuable properties.

A disappointing result for Supergirl does not mean the new DC Universe has failed, but it reinforces that audiences will not automatically support every character simply because the DC logo appears before the movie.

The studio’s response will reveal more than the box-office total. Warner Bros. can either retreat toward Batman, Superman and other proven names, or learn how to control budgets and create stronger reasons for audiences to support less established characters.

HBO Max’s growth offers another route. Not every franchise story needs a $150 million theatrical production. Television, animation and smaller streaming projects may provide more sustainable opportunities for characters who cannot currently support blockbuster expectations.

What to Watch This Weekend

Netflix releases the science-fiction thriller The Last House on Friday.

The Louis Leterrier film stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as parents whose family becomes mysteriously sealed inside its home. With resources disappearing and an unknown threat keeping them trapped, the house gradually becomes both their protection and their prison.

The production used practical effects where possible, while the first half of the movie was shot on 35mm film.

Disney+ is adding the first season of Pokémon: Indigo League on Friday, bringing Ash Ketchum’s original journey with Pikachu, Misty and Brock to the service.

Earlier this week, Disney+ also premiered Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, while the second season of X-Men ’97 continued with another episode.

The Last House is the weekend’s most intriguing new genre release because it takes a familiar survival premise and removes the obvious escape route. There is no distant planet, abandoned station or apocalyptic wasteland. The characters are trapped inside the place where they should feel safest.

The arrival of the original Pokémon series serves a different audience but demonstrates the continuing power of nostalgia. New games and generations have expanded the franchise, yet Ash meeting Pikachu remains the starting point recognized by millions of fans.

Marvel’s reported Cyclops decision may eventually shape the next decade of superhero movies, but the studio must do more than place the correct actor behind the visor. It must build an X-Men team whose relationships, conflicts and personalities matter as much as their powers.

Gaming has a more immediate test. Marvel Tōkon is available now, while Rockstar is preparing to pull the curtain back further on GTA VI. One title is attempting to establish a new franchise; the other is carrying expectations few entertainment products have ever faced.

Warner Bros. has the most complicated path forward. Its portfolio remains filled with recognizable brands, but recognizable no longer means automatic. The next stage of franchise entertainment will belong to studios that understand which stories require enormous spectacle—and which ones become stronger when the scale is reduced.
