Bandwagon Nerds News Report (8/13/2026): DC Shelves Two Shows, Star Wars Goes Tactical and Amazon Leaves MMOs
DC slows Waller and Paradise Lost, Star Wars Zero Company reveals its tactical ambitions, and Amazon prepares to leave the MMO business.
DC slows Waller and Paradise Lost, Star Wars Zero Company reveals its tactical ambitions, and Amazon prepares to leave the MMO business.
DC Studios’ original roadmap continues evolving, with two once-prominent television projects moving much further down the priority list.
Meanwhile, Star Wars: Zero Company is making a serious pitch to strategy fans, Amazon is backing away from the MMO business, and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner keeps finding new corners of the DC Universe.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for August 13, 2026!
Waller and Paradise Lost Move to the Back Burner
DC Studios’ planned Waller series starring Viola Davis is no longer in active development at HBO, although the project remains alive at DC Studios. Paradise Lost, the planned Wonder Woman-adjacent series set on Themyscira, has similarly been deprioritized at HBO while remaining a possibility for the future. Both projects were part of the original DC slate James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled in 2023.
This is probably healthier than forcing the original roadmap to remain sacred.
Shared universes get into trouble when announcement dates begin dictating creative decisions years later. If DC no longer believes these are the right projects for right now, slowing them down is preferable to making them because somebody once put their titles on a presentation slide.
The larger test is whether “still in development” eventually means something—or simply becomes the gentler language franchises use before projects disappear.
Star Wars: Zero Company Wants to Bring XCOM to the Clone Wars
Star Wars: Zero Company launches August 27 as a single-player turn-based tactics game developed by Bit Reactor, a studio led by former Firaxis and XCOM developers. Set during the Clone Wars, players command a customizable squad whose relationships and tactical effectiveness evolve through the campaign, with the game emphasizing RPG-style storytelling alongside battlefield strategy.
This may be one of the smartest uses of the Star Wars license in years.
Not every game needs to hand somebody a lightsaber and ask them to become the galaxy’s chosen hero. The Clone Wars are practically designed for tactical storytelling: squads, specialists, dangerous missions and losses that can permanently change a unit.
If Bit Reactor can make players care about the members of Zero Company before putting those characters in genuine danger, Star Wars suddenly has something it has rarely explored in games—consequences that feel personal instead of cinematic.
Amazon Is Getting Out of the MMO Business
Amazon Game Studios will transfer Western operation of Throne and Liberty back to NC in the fourth quarter of 2026, while Smilegate will take full control of Lost Ark in early 2027. Both games will continue operating in the West, with most player progress transferring, but Amazon’s exit follows the previously announced shutdown of New World and effectively ends the company’s current MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) publishing operation.
A few years ago, Amazon looked determined to become one of the largest forces in online gaming. Now it is a reminder of how difficult that market actually is.
MMOs do not merely need a successful launch. They require years of content, community management and enough recurring players to justify an enormous permanent infrastructure.
Amazon certainly has the money to stay in that fight. Apparently, it no longer sees enough reason to.
Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Joins Mister Miracle
Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner in DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation’s adult animated Mister Miracle series. Fillion is the first confirmed member of the voice cast for the Tom King-led adaptation, which centers on Scott Free, Big Barda and the cosmic war involving Darkseid, New Genesis and Apokolips. DC’s approach allows actors to portray the same characters across animation and live action.
Guy Gardner is becoming the connective tissue nobody necessarily expected.
That is not a complaint. Fillion’s version of Guy works precisely because DC does not need him to become the center of every story. He can wander into somebody else’s project, immediately change the energy and leave.
More importantly, using Fillion in both animation and live action demonstrates that DC’s promised continuity across formats was more than theoretical.
Helldivers 2 Joins PlayStation Plus Extra
Helldivers 2 joined the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog on August 12, coinciding with the release of the Devoid of Liberty expansion. Sony’s August lineup will also add Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Vampire Survivors on August 18, followed by Hell Is Us, Two Point Museum, Metro Exodus, Dying Light 2 and other titles on August 25.
Putting Helldivers 2 into the catalog is particularly well timed because multiplayer games survive on population. Every subscriber who downloads the game becomes another potential squadmate for somebody who bought it years ago.
Subscription services are often judged by how expensive their monthly additions look. Sometimes the smarter move is adding a game that becomes more valuable because thousands of new people just received access to it.
DC’s changing slate and Amazon’s retreat from MMOs tell essentially the same story from different sides of entertainment. Announcements are easy. Sustaining something for years is harder.
Zero Company now gets its chance to prove a Star Wars game can succeed by doing something structurally different. DC is deciding which pieces of its original plan still deserve resources. Amazon is acknowledging that an entire gaming strategy no longer does.
For fans, that is not necessarily bad news. The strongest franchises are usually the ones willing to abandon a plan that stopped making sense instead of asking audiences to pretend it still does.
