Marvel brought Avengers: Doomsday back to the stage, Lucasfilm revealed Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter character and finally dated Ahsoka Season 2, while Kingdom Hearts is making a major jump from games to television. And let’s not forget the X-Men reveal…

Avengers: Doomsday Reveals New Footage at D23

Marvel Studios debuted a new special look at Avengers: Doomsday during D23, with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell appearing during the presentation. The footage puts Downey’s Doctor Doom opposite Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and again highlights the collision between the Avengers, Fantastic Four and legacy X-Men characters ahead of the film’s December 18 release.

At this point Marvel does not need to convince anyone that Doomsday is large.

The more important task is convincing audiences that all of these returning actors and universes belong in one story rather than one extremely expensive cast photo.

Doom confronting Reed is exactly the relationship Marvel should emphasize. Multiversal spectacle can make the movie enormous; Doom and Reed can make it personal.

That distinction may determine whether Doomsday feels like another crossover or the beginning of Marvel’s actual endgame for the Multiverse Saga.

Marvel Reveals Its New X-Men Cast at D23

Marvel Studios finally pulled back the curtain on its next generation of X-Men during the D23 Entertainment Showcase. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, Kit Connor is Scott Summers/Cyclops, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Maya Boyd is Storm, Inde Navarrette is Rogue and Christopher Abbott will portray Professor Charles Xavier. Adam Driver was also revealed as Mister Sinister, giving the MCU’s first full X-Men lineup an immediate major villain. Thunderbolts filmmaker Jake Schreier will direct the movie.

Sink and Connor give Marvel a younger Jean-and-Scott pairing it can potentially build around for years, while Weaving as Emma Frost feels like one of those castings that instantly makes sense the moment you hear it. Driver as Mister Sinister may be the most interesting choice of all—not only because he is a huge addition, but because Marvel is apparently resisting the temptation to immediately make Magneto the centerpiece again.

And Christopher Abbott as Xavier tells us Marvel may be aiming for a very different Professor X than either Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy.

This is really the moment the MCU’s X-Men stop being a future promise and start becoming an actual team. After years of legacy mutants, cameos and teases, Marvel finally has the actors who are supposed to carry the franchise forward.

Kingdom Hearts Is Becoming an Original TV Series

Disney has greenlit the first original Kingdom Hearts television series for Disney Channel and Disney+, extending the Square Enix collaboration beyond the game franchise as Kingdom Hearts celebrates its 25th anniversary at D23.

Of all the properties Disney owns, Kingdom Hearts may be both one of the most obvious and one of the most difficult to adapt.

The pitch seems simple: Disney characters meet an original fantasy adventure.

Then you remember that explaining Sora, Roxas, Xion, Nobodies, Heartless, Organization XIII and several versions of the same people has broken stronger minds than ours.

Television could actually help. A series has time to make the mythology understandable instead of asking newcomers to absorb decades of game continuity at once.

If Disney treats this as an adaptation rather than homework, it could bring Kingdom Hearts to an audience that has always liked the characters but never owned six consoles and a flowchart.

Ryan Gosling Is Kade Auberon in Star Wars: Starfighter

Lucasfilm revealed that Ryan Gosling plays Kade Auberon in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Gosling described Kade as someone from the wrong side of the galaxy whose mysterious past pulls him into a larger adventure. The standalone film also stars Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams and arrives in theaters May 28, 2027—50 years after the original Star Wars opened.

The phrase “standalone adventure” remains the most encouraging part of this project.

Star Wars has spent years trying to decide how far it can travel from the Skywalker family while still feeling like Star Wars. A new character, an unexplored period and no immediate requirement to explain how Kade Auberon is secretly related to somebody from 1977 gives Levy room to actually discover something.

Gosling is enough of a draw to get people through the door.

The movie will be more interesting if Kade is still a stranger when we meet him.

Pixar Introduces Gatto

Pixar used D23 to unveil more of Gatto, its upcoming original feature centered on Nero, a black cat living in Venice who begins questioning the life he has built while indebted to feline crime boss Rocco. Mark Ruffalo voices Nero, while Laurence Fishburne voices Rocco.

That premise sounds wonderfully specific.

Pixar is usually at its best when the elevator pitch sounds slightly bizarre before becoming emotionally obvious once the movie starts.

A Venetian cat involved with a feline mob boss certainly qualifies.

More importantly, this is an original movie rather than another sequel. For fans who keep asking Pixar to balance its enormously profitable franchises with new worlds, Gatto now has a chance to become evidence that both strategies can coexist.

Ahsoka Season 2 Premieres January 20, 2027

Lucasfilm revealed the first teaser for Ahsoka Season 2 and announced that the series returns to Disney+ on January 20, 2027. The footage features Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker continuing to challenge Ahsoka over whether she truly considers herself a Jedi, while Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return threatens the New Republic. Rosario Dawson, Christensen and Eman Esfandi appeared at D23 alongside creator Dave Filoni.

Putting an actual date on Season 2 matters almost as much as the trailer.

The first season ended with its characters scattered across galaxies and several enormous story threads unresolved. Fans have spent years knowing another chapter was coming without knowing when.

January now gives Lucasfilm a clear runway into Starfighter later in 2027.

And using Anakin to keep pressing Ahsoka on her relationship with the Jedi is considerably more interesting than bringing Christensen back purely because audiences enjoy seeing him.

D23 continues through Sunday, with Saturday featuring additional franchise programming and Sunday’s Kingdom Hearts 25th-anniversary deep dive among the most interesting remaining panels. The event concludes August 16 with the Disney Legends ceremony.

Friday already delivered enough announcements that the rest of D23 does not need to manufacture another giant surprise.

Fans now have actual dates, characters and projects to discuss rather than another list of logos arriving “someday.”

That is the biggest difference between useful convention news and franchise noise.

Doomsday showed more of the story Marvel is trying to build. Ahsoka finally gave viewers a date. Starfighter gave Ryan Gosling an identity. Kingdom Hearts expanded into an entirely new medium.

For fans, those are announcements that change the calendar instead of simply filling it.
