Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office during its third week in theaters.

The Universal release stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and has continued drawing audiences through standard screenings and premium presentations, including Nolan’s preferred IMAX 70mm format.

The milestone gives Nolan his third billion-dollar movie, following The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The film is also approaching the totals of those Batman blockbusters and could eventually become the highest-grossing release of Nolan’s career.

The achievement provides another reminder that audiences have not abandoned movie theaters. They have become more selective about which productions deserve the time, expense and effort of a theatrical visit.

Nolan did not need a cinematic universe or decades of sequels to convince audiences that The Odyssey mattered. His reputation, the scale of the production and the promise of an experience designed for theaters created that urgency.

Uli Latukefu has reportedly been cast as Ganondorf in Nintendo and Sony Pictures’ live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

Latukefu previously portrayed a younger version of Dwayne Johnson in Young Rock. His reported multipicture agreement suggests Nintendo and Sony may have plans for Ganondorf beyond the first movie, although additional Zelda films have not been officially announced.

The Wes Ball-directed production stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Dichen Lachman will reportedly play Impa, while Yvonne Strahovski and the late Sam Neill have also been connected to the cast.

Ganondorf may be the most important casting decision outside Link and Zelda.

The character cannot simply be presented as a large final boss waiting at the end of the adventure. Ganondorf is traditionally a political leader, manipulator and recurring threat whose connection to Hyrule extends across generations and timelines.

A multipicture agreement also provides the clearest indication yet that the studios may be thinking beyond one film. Zelda contains enough mythology, locations and characters to support a long-running franchise, but the filmmakers must first create a version of Hyrule audiences want to revisit.

Star Trek Anniversary Documentary Heads to Theaters

A feature-length documentary celebrating the 60th anniversary of Star Trek will receive a theatrical release through Regal Cinemas beginning October 9.

The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and the World is executive produced by William Shatner and will examine the franchise’s influence on entertainment, technology and popular culture.

Select presentations are also expected to include appearances and question-and-answer sessions with people connected to the franchise. The documentary arrives during the yearlong celebration of Star Trek, which premiered on television in September 1966.

Few franchises have a stronger argument for a documentary focused on cultural influence.

Star Trek did more than produce successful television shows and movies. It shaped how generations imagined communication, exploration, diversity and humanity’s relationship with technology.

The theatrical release is also appropriate for a fanbase that has always treated Trek as a community rather than something consumed alone. Giving fans a shared anniversary experience honors that history better than quietly placing another documentary onto a crowded streaming menu.

The Hobbits Reunite Tonight in Boston

Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd will reunite tonight at Fan Expo Boston for An Evening with the Hobbits: In Celebration of 25 Years.

The event begins at 7:30 PM ET and will feature conversations, stories and memories from the actors who portrayed Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Boston appearance is part of an 11-city anniversary tour celebrating 25 years since The Fellowship of the Ring began the cinematic journey through Middle-earth. Additional stops include Chicago, Toronto and Dallas.

The continued demand for these reunions illustrates how deeply Jackson’s trilogy remains connected to its audience.

The setup will only work if the mystery eventually provides satisfying answers. A strong premise can attract viewers, but the ending will determine whether The Last House becomes another disposable streaming thriller or a science-fiction story people continue discussing after the credits.

The Odyssey reaching $1 billion is the clearest reminder that familiar stories can still feel essential when filmmakers give audiences a reason to experience them differently.

That same challenge applies to Zelda. Nintendo and Sony have access to one of gaming’s richest worlds, but recognizable characters and locations will not be enough. Hyrule must feel like a real place, and Ganondorf must become more than an obstacle standing between Link and the final credits.

Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings represent the standard newer franchises hope to achieve. Their anniversaries matter because generations of fans still care about the characters, ideas and relationships at their center.
