Disney enters D23 weekend with plenty to celebrate—and a couple of projects it has decided it no longer wants to pay for.

The planned live-action Power Rangers series is dead at Disney+, a new report sheds light on why Marvel reversed course on Wonder Man, and Marvel Comics is sending the X-Men into battle against Xenomorphs.

Disney+ Drops Its Live-Action Power Rangers Series

Disney+ will not move forward with the live-action Power Rangers series that had been in development with Percy Jackson and the Olympians producers Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz. The project had been set up at 20th Television, but Disney reportedly decided the economics did not justify a high-budget series built around an IP owned by Hasbro.

That is a brutally practical reason to kill a show.

Power Rangers is recognizable enough to require expensive expectations but apparently not valuable enough for Disney to accept all that financial risk while somebody else owns the franchise.

And this is now another failed attempt to reboot the property after Netflix previously tried developing its own version.

The Rangers will return eventually. The question is whether anyone has figured out what a modern Power Rangers project is supposed to be besides “the thing adults remember liking as kids.”

Wonder Man Season 2 Reportedly Died Because of Viewership

Marvel’s Wonder Man was reportedly canceled because Disney did not believe the show’s audience justified the cost of a second season. The series had initially been renewed in March before Disney reversed course months later, with the cancellation occurring before a Season 2 writers room opened.

This is the ugly side of streaming television becoming more financially disciplined.

A few years ago, Marvel could treat Disney+ as a place where almost every character deserved an ongoing series. That era is clearly over.

Critical praise and an Emmy nomination are nice. They are not enough if the audience is not large enough to make the budget work.

For fans who want Marvel to keep experimenting with smaller, stranger projects, that creates an uncomfortable equation: those shows now have to perform like investments, not just creative exercises.

Alien vs. X-Men Becomes Marvel’s Next Franchise Collision

Marvel Comics announced Alien vs. X-Men, a four-issue crossover series that pits mutantkind against the Xenomorph species. The series continues Marvel’s recent run of licensed Alien crossovers and begins in September 2026.

This one barely needs a sales pitch.

The X-Men have spent decades fighting creatures that want to wipe them out because of what they are. Dropping Xenomorphs into that mythology gives Marvel something more interesting than “superheroes fight movie monster.”

The best version of this story leans into mutant biology.

What happens when a Xenomorph encounters an X-gene? What does a facehugger create from Wolverine, Nightcrawler or Colossus?

Those are horrifying questions, which means Marvel has probably chosen exactly the right crossover.

Madden NFL 27 and Hell Let Loose: Vietnam Hit the August Release Calendar

August 13 brought several notable game releases, including Madden NFL 27 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, along with tactical shooter Hell Let Loose: Vietnam. The latter expands the large-scale 50-versus-50 formula with helicopters, patrol boats, tunnels and Vietnam-era environments.

This is a weirdly complementary release day.

Madden represents one of gaming’s most predictable annual traditions.

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is practically the opposite—deliberate, punishing multiplayer built around communication and players actually doing their assigned jobs.

There is room for both, but only one of them will make you discover exactly how angry you can become at a stranger who refuses to play medic.

D23 Opens With Disney’s Entertainment Showcase

D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event begins August 14 in Anaheim and runs through August 16. Friday’s Disney Entertainment Showcase is expected to focus on film, television and streaming, with Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Disney Animation and other company brands positioned for potential announcements throughout the weekend.

This is the obvious storm cloud hanging over every entertainment story today.

Anything Marvel or Star Wars fans think they know on Friday morning could be outdated by Friday night.

D23 has also become more important because Disney has spent the past few years becoming more selective. When fewer projects are being greenlit, the ones actually announced on the company’s largest fan stage carry more weight.

What to Watch

D23 runs from August 14–16 in Anaheim, with Friday’s entertainment programming the biggest immediate target for movie and streaming announcements. Sunday also brings the premiere of DC Studios’ Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

For Marvel and Star Wars fans, D23 is the obvious priority.

For DC fans, Sunday is arguably even more important.

Lanterns is one of the first major tests of whether the new DC Universe can make a superhero show feel like something other than a superhero show. If the promised detective-drama approach works, DC suddenly has another lane available besides giant theatrical spectacle.

Disney walked away from Power Rangers. Marvel reversed a Wonder Man renewal. Studios are increasingly deciding that recognizable names alone are not enough reason to spend hundreds of millions of dollars.

For fans, that can mean fewer projects—but potentially more attention on the ones that survive.

D23 now gets to show us exactly which ideas Disney believes are worth betting on next.
