Josh Allen christens the new Highmark Stadium, Devon Witherspoon lands a massive extension and Minnesota fears a significant Jamal Adams knee injury.

Buffalo opened its new home with exactly the quarterback performance Bills fans wanted to see.

Elsewhere, Seattle made Devon Witherspoon one of the NFL’s highest-paid defensive backs, Minnesota received troubling news about Jamal Adams and Deshaun Watson returned to live game action for Cleveland.

It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for August 16, 2026!

Josh Allen Opens New Highmark Stadium With a Touchdown

Josh Allen completed six of eight passes for 111 yards and a touchdown as Buffalo defeated Carolina 29-14 in the first game played at the new Highmark Stadium. Allen connected with Keon Coleman for a nine-yard touchdown, while the game also marked Joe Brady’s first preseason appearance as Bills head coach following the departure of Sean McDermott.

There are meaningless preseason scores, and then there are preseason moments that still matter to a fan base.

The first touchdown pass in a new stadium coming from Josh Allen qualifies.

Buffalo did not need Allen to prove anything Saturday. The value was getting several live possessions, giving the building its first real football memory and getting the franchise quarterback back to the sideline healthy.

Mission accomplished.

Devon Witherspoon Lands a Four-Year, $132 Million Extension

Seattle agreed to terms with cornerback Devon Witherspoon on a four-year, $132 million contract extension Saturday. The deal secures the former No. 5 overall pick as a cornerstone of the Seahawks secondary beyond his rookie contract.

Seattle is paying for the player Witherspoon already is rather than waiting for the market to become even more expensive.

That is generally the smarter approach with elite young defensive backs.

The Seahawks have spent the post-Legion of Boom years trying to rebuild an identity on defense. Locking up one of the players capable of defining the next version of that identity is considerably easier than trying to replace him.

Vikings Say Jamal Adams’ Knee Injury Is “Not Good”

Minnesota linebacker Jamal Adams was carted to the locker room after suffering a knee injury during Saturday’s 13-10 preseason victory over the New York Giants. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said afterward that the initial outlook was “not good.”

That phrase carries considerably more weight in August than the final score.

Minnesota brought Adams in because his versatility can change how a defense uses pressure packages and handles certain personnel groups.

If testing confirms a significant injury, the Vikings lose more than one name from the depth chart—they lose a piece the defense could use in several different ways.

For now, Minnesota can only wait for the diagnosis.

Deshaun Watson Returns as Browns Fall to Chicago

Deshaun Watson returned to game action Saturday as Cleveland lost 34-10 to Chicago. Bears veteran Case Keenum completed nine of 10 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns, while Cleveland continues preparing to give Shedeur Sanders the start in its second preseason game against Buffalo next weekend.

The Browns have deliberately created separate preseason opportunities for Watson and Sanders, which means this is less about comparing one box score against another than seeing whether either quarterback can take control of the offense.

Next week Sanders starts, and ff he performs well in extended work, Cleveland’s quarterback conversation gets considerably more interesting than it was when camp opened.

Ravens Rookie Joe Fagnano Throws for 224 Yards

Baltimore rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano completed 18 of 27 passes for 224 yards as the Ravens defeated Philadelphia 24-7. The Eagles rested several prominent starters, while Baltimore received an extended look at Fagnano after injuries altered its quarterback depth behind Lamar Jackson.

This is exactly what preseason football is for: nobody is confusing a strong August game with an argument that Fagnano should challenge Lamar Jackson.

The question is whether Baltimore has discovered another quarterback worth developing.

Two hundred-plus yards against NFL competition earns another look. For players living at the bottom of a 90-man roster, another look is often the entire goal.

Zach Wilson Makes His Case in New Orleans

Zach Wilson continued his attempt to secure New Orleans’ backup quarterback job during the Saints’ 24-20 loss to Jacksonville. Wilson produced an encouraging performance while trying to establish himself behind Tyler Shough, even though Jacksonville erased a 14-point deficit and won on a late J’Mari Taylor touchdown.

Wilson’s story has changed considerably from the expectations that followed him into the NFL.

He no longer needs to justify where he was drafted.

He needs to demonstrate that he can function reliably inside an NFL offense, protect the football and become someone a team trusts if the starter misses time.

That is a more modest goal—but it could also keep him in the league for a long time.

NFL Transactions — August 15, 2026

Saturday’s roster activity included Seattle’s massive Witherspoon extension, Houston adding another quarterback and multiple teams making injury-related moves.

  • Arizona Cardinals – Signed RB Tre Stewart
  • Arizona Cardinals – Signed TE Baylor Cupp
  • Arizona Cardinals – Signed DL Keveion’ta Spears
  • Arizona Cardinals – Placed OL Chase Bisontis on injured reserve
  • Arizona Cardinals – Placed LB Austin Keys on injured reserve
  • Cincinnati Bengals – Signed DB Matthew McDoom
  • Cincinnati Bengals – Activated DT B.J. Hill from PUP
  • Green Bay Packers – Released QB Kyron Drones
  • Houston Texans – Signed QB Brett Rypien
  • Houston Texans – Placed QB Graham Mertz on injured reserve
  • Las Vegas Raiders – Signed DT Foley Fatukasi
  • Las Vegas Raiders – Placed LB Brennan Jackson on injured reserve
  • New England Patriots – Signed OL Darrian Dalcourt
  • New England Patriots – Signed OL Joseph Michalski
  • Philadelphia Eagles – Signed LB Brandon George
  • Seattle Seahawks – Agreed to terms with CB Devon Witherspoon on four-year extension

Allen gave Buffalo’s new stadium its first signature moment. Witherspoon became part of Seattle’s long-term plan. Fagnano and Wilson gave their teams reasons to keep evaluating them.

Minnesota experienced the other side of August.

For NFL fans, that is the tradeoff every preseason weekend brings: young players can earn careers in a handful of snaps, while one bad play can alter an established veteran’s season before the games even count.
