Coby Bryant will miss 8-10 weeks, Jahmyr Gibbs remains in a hold-in, Jadeveon Clowney returns to Houston and Monday’s NFL transactions reshape rosters.
A major injury has created an immediate problem for Chicago’s secondary, while one of the NFL’s most productive running backs remains off the practice field during contract negotiations.
Houston is also reuniting with a former No. 1 overall selection, and Buffalo has received encouraging news after Saturday’s frightening injury scene.
It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for August 4, 2026!
Jahmyr Gibbs’ Hold-In Reaches Fifth Practice
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs missed his fifth consecutive practice Monday while seeking a long-term contract.
Gibbs has remained present at training camp and spent portions of practice speaking with teammates on the sideline. When asked how long the hold-in could continue, he said only time will tell.
The three-time Pro Bowl selection is scheduled to earn a $1.1 million base salary and $2 million roster bonus this season. Detroit has already exercised the fifth-year option that guarantees him $14.29 million in 2027.
Gibbs has accumulated 5,029 yards from scrimmage and 49 touchdowns through his first 49 NFL games. Last season, he rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 77 passes for 616 yards and five more scores.
Detroit controls Gibbs’ contract for two more seasons, but that leverage does not eliminate the pressure to reach an agreement. Every productive season raises his value while also increasing the physical risk he assumes without long-term guarantees.
The Lions must also weigh Gibbs’ unique offensive importance against the league’s continued reluctance to give running backs market-setting contracts. He is more versatile than a traditional runner, but Detroit still has to decide how much that difference is worth.
Coby Bryant Expected to Miss Eight to 10 Weeks
Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant is expected to miss between eight and 10 weeks after suffering a left knee injury during Monday’s training-camp practice.
Bryant reportedly sustained a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture. A full 10-week recovery would place his potential return around Chicago’s Week 5 game against Green Bay on October 11.
The Bears signed Bryant to a three-year, $40 million contract in March following his Super Bowl season with Seattle. He started 15 games in 2025 and recorded 66 tackles, four interceptions and one forced fumble.
Chicago added Bryant to become an immediate starter rather than a depth piece. Losing him for the opening month would force the Bears to adjust their secondary before the regular season has even begun.
The diagnosis is better than a season-ending ligament tear, but the timetable still leaves little room for a setback. Chicago must determine whether its current depth can cover the absence or whether another veteran needs to be added.
Jadeveon Clowney Returns to Houston
The Houston Texans have signed Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year contract, bringing the veteran pass rusher back to the franchise that selected him first overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Clowney spent his first five seasons with Houston and earned three Pro Bowl selections before playing for Seattle, Tennessee, Cleveland, Baltimore, Carolina and New England.
The 33-year-old has recorded 66.5 career sacks, including 24.5 over the past three seasons.
Houston does not need Clowney to recreate his first run with the organization. The Texans already have Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter leading a talented defensive front.
Clowney can instead operate as a rotational defender who moves across the formation, strengthens the run defense and reduces the number of snaps Houston’s primary pass rushers must handle during the regular season.
The reunion also gives Clowney another opportunity to chase a championship with the franchise where his career began.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson Avoids Major Injury
Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson reportedly avoided an Achilles tear or another major lower-leg injury after being carted from Saturday’s practice.
Gardner-Johnson is dealing with a lower-leg strain, although Buffalo has not established a timetable for his return.
Veteran Sam Franklin Jr. received first-team repetitions Monday in Gardner-Johnson’s place. Rookie Jalon Kilgore and several other defensive backs remain part of the competition for additional snaps.
The update is a significant relief after the initial scene created concern that Gardner-Johnson could miss the season.
Buffalo can now evaluate Franklin, Kilgore and the rest of the safety group without treating the position as a long-term emergency. The Bills still need Gardner-Johnson back before the regular season, but they no longer appear to be searching for a permanent replacement.
NFL Transactions — August 3, 2026

- Indianapolis Colts – Released defensive back Cameron Mitchell
- New England Patriots – Signed defensive tackle Casey Rogers
- San Francisco 49ers – Placed defensive end Mikail Kamara on injured reserve
- Washington Commanders – Placed cornerback Tre Hawkins III on injured reserve.
Houston made the most consequential additions by signing Clowney and Takitaki. Both players give DeMeco Ryans experienced options for a defense expected to carry significant championship expectations.
Arizona continued reshaping the bottom of its roster by claiming two players and releasing two others, while injuries forced Dallas, San Francisco and Washington to remove players from their active competitions.
Bryant’s injury demonstrates why training-camp depth matters. Chicago believed it had secured an established starter in March, but the Bears may now need to open the season without him.
Detroit faces a different kind of uncertainty. Gibbs is healthy and under contract, but the Lions must decide whether his exceptional production justifies breaking from the NFL’s usual approach to paying running backs.
Houston has chosen experience over waiting. Clowney may not be the same player the Texans drafted 12 years ago, but he does not need to be. A productive rotational role could make an already dangerous defense even more difficult to manage.
