C.J. Gardner-Johnson Carted From Bills Practice

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted to the locker room after suffering an apparent right lower-leg injury during an 11-on-11 period Saturday.

Gardner-Johnson was unable to place weight on the leg and initially appeared to point toward the area near his Achilles. He was evaluated inside the medical tent before being transported from the field.

Offensive lineman Dion Dawkins later said coaches told him Gardner-Johnson was okay, offering some optimism after the concerning scene. Buffalo has not announced an official diagnosis or recovery timeline.

Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone received first-team repetitions after Gardner-Johnson left practice.

Buffalo signed Gardner-Johnson to provide experience, physicality and an edge to its secondary. Even a short absence would require the Bills to adjust the communication and rotation behind him.

The initial update is encouraging, but the results of further testing will matter more than optimism immediately following practice.

Bo Nix Will Not Abandon His Running Style

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix says he is fully recovered from the fractured right ankle that ended his 2025 postseason and does not plan to become a less mobile player.

Nix underwent surgery after suffering the injury during Denver’s divisional-round victory and required a second procedure to remove bone spurs.

The third-year quarterback has rushed for 786 yards and nine touchdowns across his first two NFL seasons. He believes his ability to extend plays and escape pressure remains an important part of Denver’s offense.

Sean Payton agreed that Nix should continue using his mobility, pointing to the quarterback’s ability to avoid sacks despite leading the NFL with 612 passing attempts last season.

The Broncos do not need Nix to become a stationary quarterback. They need him to recognize when extending a play is worth the physical risk and when protecting himself is the smarter decision.

Denver’s offense loses part of its identity if Nix stops running entirely. The goal should be better risk management rather than removing one of his most effective skills.

Geno Smith Delivers Perfect Practice for Jets

Geno Smith completed all 11 of his passes during team drills Saturday, including four touchdowns. Smith repeatedly connected with Garrett Wilson and produced his strongest practice since the New York Jets opened training camp.

Rookie Cade Klubnik also began well but struggled later in the session. Klubnik threw two interceptions, with Qwan’tez Stiggers and Marcelino McCrary-Ball recording the takeaways.

Right tackle Armand Membou delivered another encouraging performance by consistently containing rookie edge rusher David Bailey.

One perfect practice does not end a quarterback competition, but Smith is demonstrating the command expected from an experienced starter.

Klubnik’s mistakes are part of a rookie’s development. The Jets can remain patient as long as Smith continues showing that the offense is capable of functioning efficiently with him leading it.

Chiefs Rookie Cyrus Allen Suffers Leg Injury

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen was carted from Saturday’s practice after colliding with a teammate during a special-teams drill.

Allen had difficulty placing weight on his left leg before being taken to the locker room. The Chiefs had not determined the severity of the injury Saturday evening.

Kansas City selected Allen in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The rookie had impressed Andy Reid during the opening portion of camp, with the coach saying Allen had already earned the quarterback’s trust.

Allen was competing for a role at receiver while also attempting to secure his roster position through special teams.

Any extended absence would cost him valuable evaluation time during the period when young players establish themselves. Kansas City can afford to wait for the diagnosis before adding another receiver, but the injury interrupts one of its more promising rookie performances.

Lions Add Veteran Linebacker Devin White

The Detroit Lions have signed veteran linebacker Devin White to a free-agent contract.

White started all 17 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last season and recorded 174 tackles, the third-highest total in the NFL. He also contributed 2.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, one interception and one forced fumble.

The former fifth-overall draft pick has accumulated 759 tackles and 25.5 sacks across 100 regular-season games. His career also includes a Pro Bowl selection and a Super Bowl championship with Tampa Bay.

Detroit added White after rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder suffered a leg injury during training camp.

White’s tackle total demonstrates that he can still produce, although Detroit is not required to hand him an immediate starting position.

The Lions can use him as experienced depth behind Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez while determining how much of his former explosiveness remains.

Steelers Add Rayshawn Jenkins to Secondary

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly signing veteran safety Rayshawn Jenkins to a one-year contract. Jenkins appeared in all 17 games for Cleveland last season, starting three and recording 45 tackles with one interception.

The 32-year-old has played 139 games during his NFL career, including 92 starts. His stops have included the Chargers, Jaguars, Seahawks and Browns.

Pittsburgh selected Jenkins after also working out veteran safety Jordan Whitehead.

The Steelers are adding experience behind DeShon Elliott, Jaquan Brisker and Darnell Savage rather than asking Jenkins to immediately take control of the secondary.

His ability to contribute defensively and on special teams gives Pittsburgh another option if injuries force the team deeper into its safety rotation.

NFL Transactions — August 1, 2026

• Arizona Cardinals – Placed defensive tackle P.J. Mustipher on season-ending injured reserve
• Arizona Cardinals – Signed defensive tackle Brodric Martin

Mustipher suffered a significant foot injury during Arizona’s first padded practice. His absence removes another defensive lineman from a unit attempting to establish its rotation before preseason games begin.

Martin brings size and previous NFL experience, but he has appeared in only six regular-season games. Arizona needs him to remain healthy long enough to compete for snaps behind Darius Robinson and Dante Stills.

Saturday’s injuries created more questions than answers. Buffalo is waiting to learn whether Gardner-Johnson avoided a serious injury, while Kansas City must determine how much development time Allen will lose.

Denver and New York received more encouraging quarterback developments. Nix is healthy enough to retain the mobility that makes him dangerous, while Smith showed why experience still matters in a competition against a rookie.

Detroit, Pittsburgh and Arizona responded to roster needs by adding veteran help. Those moves may appear minor in August, but functional depth becomes increasingly valuable as camp injuries accumulate.
