Fernando Mendoza Las Vegas Raiders Contract Dispute

Fernando Mendoza throws a TD in his Raiders debut, Kurtis Rourke leaves for the hospital and Arizona fears a serious Chase Bisontis injury.

The first full Thursday of NFL preseason football delivered exactly what August usually promises: intriguing quarterback performances, unexpected roster heroes and injuries nobody wanted to see.

Fernando Mendoza finally made his Raiders debut, Kurtis Rourke’s impressive night ended at the hospital and Arizona left Las Vegas worried about one of its young offensive linemen.

It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for August 14, 2026!

Fernando Mendoza Throws Touchdown in Raiders Debut

No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown in his preseason debut as Las Vegas fell 27-14 to Arizona. Mendoza connected with Jack Bech for a six-yard touchdown and led the Raiders into scoring range on another drive. Veteran Kirk Cousins started and completed five of six passes for 50 yards and a touchdown on his lone series.

That is probably the ideal quarterback night for the Raiders. Cousins reminded everyone why a rookie is not simply going to be handed the job, while Mendoza looked comfortable enough to keep the competition interesting.

The touchdown matters less than how Mendoza handled extended NFL work. Five drives provide considerably more information than a handful of scripted snaps. Las Vegas can leave Week 1 of the preseason without needing to manufacture a quarterback controversy. Both guys gave the coaching staff something positive.

Kurtis Rourke’s Strong Debut Ends With Hospital Trip

San Francisco quarterback Kurtis Rourke completed 12 of 14 passes for 101 yards and added 14 rushing yards before leaving Thursday’s 19-13 loss to Tennessee with a rib injury. Rourke experienced difficulty breathing after the hit and was sent to the hospital for further evaluation; initial X-rays did not show a broken rib.

That is a brutal ending to what had been an excellent return to game action. Rourke had not played in 601 days after recovering from a torn ACL, and he looked remarkably composed before taking the hit.

The stat line will help his case in San Francisco’s quarterback room. The only concern now is making sure Thursday does not become another extended interruption. For a player fighting for an NFL future, availability matters almost as much as performance.

Cardinals Fear Significant Chase Bisontis Knee Injury

Arizona rookie guard Chase Bisontis suffered a knee injury during Thursday’s game against Las Vegas, and head coach Mike LaFleur described the initial outlook as “not good” before additional testing. Rookie quarterback Carson Beck sat out with minor rib discomfort, while running back Jeremiyah Love also suffered an ankle injury that is not believed to be serious.

The phrase “not good” is about the last thing anyone wants to hear in August. Arizona can survive sitting Beck for an exhibition game. It can manage a minor ankle problem with Love.

Potentially losing a young offensive lineman for significant time is different. Offensive-line depth disappears rapidly once the regular season begins, and every injury forces another player into a role the team may not have planned for.

Anthony Richardson Shows Both Sides of the Experience

Anthony Richardson completed 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards with one interception and rushed six times for 53 yards and a touchdown as Indianapolis tied New England 13-13. Daniel Jones did not play for the Colts, giving Richardson the entire first half to operate the offense.

That is almost the perfect Anthony Richardson stat line. The athletic ability remains impossible to ignore. So does the mistake.

For Richardson, preseason football matters because Indianapolis already knows about the physical ceiling. What the Colts need to see is whether the quarterback can stack controlled, efficient possessions without giving one back. Thursday was encouraging. It was not conclusive.

Patrick Mahomes Will Sit While Josh Allen Will Play

Kansas City will hold Patrick Mahomes out of Saturday’s preseason opener against the Rams, with Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun splitting quarterback snaps. Buffalo is taking the opposite approach: Josh Allen and the Bills’ healthy starters are expected to play limited snaps Saturday against Carolina.

There is no universally correct preseason philosophy.Andy Reid already knows what Patrick Mahomes looks like running his offense. Buffalo’s staff apparently sees value in letting Allen and the starters get a small amount of live work.

Both approaches make sense until someone gets hurt. That uncomfortable reality is why coaches spend every August answering the same questions about preseason playing time.

Seahawks Expected to Sign Terrion Arnold

Seattle is expected to sign former Detroit Lions first-round cornerback Terrion Arnold. Arnold started 22 games over two seasons with Detroit before being released in June and currently faces multiple felony charges stemming from an alleged February incident in Florida.

This is not a normal depth signing. Seattle is acquiring a 23-year-old former first-round pick with legitimate starting experience, but the legal situation will remain attached to every football conversation around him until it is resolved.

From a roster standpoint, the upside is obvious. Everything off the field is why he was available.

NFL Transactions — August 13, 2026

Thursday’s transaction wire included veteran additions, injury moves and continued preseason roster churn around the league.

  • Cleveland Browns – Signed CB Jeremiah McClendon
  • Cleveland Browns – Waived CB Tyron Herring with an injury designation
  • Denver Broncos – Signed C Lecitus Smith
  • Denver Broncos – Placed C Michael Deiter on injured reserve
  • Houston Texans – Released LB Sione Takitaki with an injury settlement
  • Los Angeles Rams – Signed LB Monty Rice
  • New England Patriots – Signed RB JaMycal Hasty
  • New England Patriots – Placed RB Terrell Jennings on injured reserve
  • New York Giants – Signed DB Ugo Amadi
  • New York Giants – Signed DB Sam Webb
  • New York Giants – Released DB DJ James
  • New York Giants – Released DB David Long
  • Pittsburgh Steelers – Officially signed LB Elandon Roberts
  • Seattle Seahawks – Expected to sign CB Terrion Arnold

The preseason scoreboard is far less important than what happened around it.

Mendoza showed why Las Vegas made him the No. 1 pick. Rourke reminded San Francisco why it kept waiting through his recovery. Richardson flashed the enormous ability that has always made Indianapolis hesitate to give up on him.

For NFL fans, Thursday finally replaced training-camp reports with real football.

Now comes the harder part: separating performances that actually change September from everything that simply looked good in August.
