AEW opens the Continental Challenge Cup, Lola Vice says goodbye to AAA and WWE Raw heads to Norfolk in the post-SummerSlam fallout.

AEW launched its newest tournament Saturday night, while one of NXT’s most prominent names appears ready to close the door on her time in Mexico.

WWE also moves deeper into its post-SummerSlam landscape Monday night when Raw arrives in Norfolk.

AEW Continental Challenge Cup Gets Underway

AEW began the Continental Challenge Cup on Saturday’s Collision from Colorado Springs, with Claudio Castagnoli defeating Ace Austin and Orange Cassidy advancing past Matt Sydal in first-round tournament action. Eddie Kingston also defeated Jake Doyle to advance.

The tournament uses a 16-man field with blind-draw matchups, no outside interference and no time limits. Four wrestlers will eventually advance to the semifinals in Glasgow on August 26 before the final takes place at All In, where the winner will also become AEW Continental Champion.

Castagnoli and Cassidy advancing gives AEW two established tournament threats immediately, but Kingston may be the more interesting name moving forward. His return to meaningful singles competition gives the Cup another potential emotional centerpiece as AEW begins narrowing the field toward All In.

The format also creates something AEW tournaments have occasionally lacked: uncertainty. Without a traditional bracket, viewers cannot immediately map out the obvious path to the final.

Lola Vice Says Goodbye to AAA

Lola Vice has formally said goodbye to AAA after a year working regularly in Mexico.

Vice recently relinquished both the NXT Women’s Championship and AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship. In an interview with WWE’s Andrea Bazarte, she thanked the Mexican audience and said the experience taught her confidence and helped her learn to enjoy the moment rather than constantly worrying about what came next.

Nothing about a Raw or SmackDown move has been officially announced, but the timing makes the possibility difficult to ignore.

Giving up championships in two promotions and then publicly closing the AAA chapter creates the kind of clean break WWE typically wants before moving a performer into a new role.

Vice’s time in Mexico may prove particularly useful if that promotion comes. She leaves NXT with more than developmental television experience; she has worked in front of a different audience, within another wrestling culture and alongside performers with styles she would not encounter every week at the Performance Center.

Oba Femi Advertised for August 21 SmackDown

Oba Femi is being advertised for the August 21 edition of SmackDown at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

The appearance comes after Femi defeated Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell at SummerSlam, giving WWE an obvious opportunity to begin moving one of its most protected young stars deeper into the main-roster picture.

An advertisement is not the same thing as an official roster move, but Femi has reached the point where keeping him isolated from Raw and SmackDown becomes increasingly difficult.

Beating Lesnar at SummerSlam was not merely another victory. WWE attached Femi to one of the most recognizable dominant performers of the last 25 years and allowed him to emerge on the other side.

Toronto could therefore become another important marker in his transition from developmental centerpiece to somebody WWE expects its larger audience to accept as a major player.

Raw Heads to Norfolk After SummerSlam

WWE Raw comes to the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia, on Monday night.

WWE’s event page lists Seth Rollins, Oba Femi, Liv Morgan, Dominik Mysterio, Sol Ruca and Penta among the featured stars for the August 10 show. The episode follows last Monday’s immediate SummerSlam fallout and gives WWE another week to establish the programs that will carry Raw into the remainder of August.

SummerSlam settled several major questions, but the more important work now is establishing what those results actually changed.

Oba Femi’s victory over Brock Lesnar demands a meaningful next step. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins need direction after their SummerSlam main event. Raw’s women’s division also has to continue reshuffling around its champions and emerging challengers.

The post-PLE episode gets the surprises. The following week often reveals the actual plan.
