Jacy Jayne and the MFTs win WWE gold on SmackDown, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton erupt in Boston, and the G1 Climax reaches its final four.

Boston produced two championship changes Friday night and another violent escalation between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.

Meanwhile, CM Punk and Kevin Owens made their Toronto title fight even more personal, and New Japan enters the weekend guaranteed to crown a first-time G1 Climax winner.

Jacy Jayne Captures the Women’s United States Championship

Jacy Jayne defeated Tiffany Stratton to win the Women’s United States Championship on Friday’s SmackDown. Stratton entered the match after being attacked earlier in the show by Nia Jax and Lash Legend. Jayne survived the Prettiest Moonsault Ever by getting her knees up, and after Stratton became distracted helping Chelsea Green against Fatal Influence, Jayne caught her with the Rolling Encore for the championship.

That is a lot of moving pieces surrounding one title change, but the result gives Jayne a significant singles accomplishment and immediately strengthens Fatal Influence.

Stratton also has a legitimate argument that she never entered the match at full strength, which means WWE can revisit this without making the former champion look like she simply got beaten.

The more interesting development may be where Nia and Lash fit. They created the injury that helped change the championship without needing to interfere directly in the finish.

MFTs Take the WWE Tag Team Championship

Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga captured the WWE Tag Team Championship from Damian Priest and R-Truth in a Triple Threat Match that also included The War Raiders. With Haku at ringside, the MFTs used a rake of the eyes before hitting The Brother’s Keeper on R-Truth for the victory.

The important part is that WWE did not simply add another team to the division—it moved the championships into a larger faction story.

Tama and Talla holding gold gives the MFTs something tangible to protect and gives every team chasing them an obvious target.

For Priest and Truth, the Triple Threat structure also provides an easy road back. They lost the championships without a clean two-on-two defeat, which means Friday can end one reign without necessarily ending the rivalry.

Nick Aldis Gives Chelsea Green 30 Days to Defend Her Championship

Chelsea Green will remain the Interim WWE Women’s Champion despite suffering a broken orbital bone. SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis initially told Green on Friday that she would have to relinquish the championship because of the injury, prompting an emotional plea from Green about how hard she had fought to finally reach this position. Aldis ultimately reversed his decision and gave Green 30 days to become medically cleared and defend the championship. If she cannot do so within that window, she will be stripped of the title.

Green’s injury already created the bizarre possibility of WWE needing an interim champion for an interim champion. Instead, the 30-day deadline turns a legitimate injury into an actual storyline with a clock attached to it.

And Chelsea is almost uniquely suited for this situation. Whether she returns wearing a protective face mask, spends the next month desperately trying to convince doctors to clear her or finds increasingly ridiculous ways to extend the deadline, WWE now has a story instead of another tournament.

The question becomes part of the appeal: Can Chelsea Green actually make it back in time to defend the championship she fought so hard to win?

Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton Tear SmackDown Apart

Randy Orton attacked Cody Rhodes before Rhodes could wrestle Sami Zayn in Friday’s main event, sparking a prolonged brawl that spilled around ringside and ultimately ended the show. Earlier, CM Punk and Kevin Owens exchanged another highly personal confrontation one week before their Undisputed WWE Championship match in Toronto, while Baron Corbin retained the United States Championship against hometown challenger Carmelo Hayes.

WWE did not need Cody and Randy to wrestle Friday.

The rivalry is working because every interaction makes the eventual match feel less like something scheduled by management and more like something officials will eventually be forced to contain.

Punk and Owens are reaching the same point. Their Toronto match already has enough history behind it; the final week should be about tension rather than adding another complicated reason for them to fight.

G1 Climax 36 Guarantees a First-Time Winner

The G1 Climax 36 semifinals take place Saturday at Ryogoku Sumo Hall with Yota Tsuji facing Yuya Uemura and Callum Newman battling Ryohei Oiwa. None of the four semifinalists has previously won the G1, guaranteeing a first-time tournament champion when the final takes place Sunday.

That makes this one of the most consequential G1 weekends New Japan has had in years.

There is no fallback to an established tournament winner. Whoever survives Sunday immediately adds his name to a list that helps define generations of New Japan main-event talent.

Tsuji has the obvious wrinkle as the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion. If he wins the entire tournament himself, New Japan suddenly has to approach the traditional post-G1 championship picture from an entirely different direction.

Xelina Sets House of Glory Debut

Xelina, formerly known in WWE as Zelina Vega, will make her House of Glory debut at the promotion’s Fallout event on September 4 at the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles. The appearance comes as HOG takes one of its events outside its traditional New York market.

That is a useful booking for both sides.

House of Glory gets a recognizable name for an important market expansion, while Xelina continues building the post-WWE portion of her career without immediately tying herself to one major company.

Independent wrestling becomes considerably more interesting when recently available talent treats it as a destination rather than a waiting room.

Friday’s SmackDown featured two championship changes, two successful title defenses and the Cody Rhodes-Randy Orton brawl that closed the show.

For wrestling fans, Saturday’s biggest focus is overseas. Four wrestlers enter Ryogoku knowing one of them will leave the weekend with his career permanently elevated as a first-time G1 Climax winner.
