The first SmackDown after SummerSlam gave CM Punk no shortage of challengers, but Kevin Owens walked away with something concrete: a WWE Championship match.

Elsewhere, Tatum Paxley made a surprise main-roster debut alongside the returning Alexa Bliss, while new details emerged regarding Vince McMahon’s financial responsibility in the WWE shareholder lawsuit settlement.

Kevin Owens Challenges CM Punk for WWE Championship

Kevin Owens wasted little time establishing his intentions after returning to WWE at SummerSlam.

Owens confronted WWE Champion CM Punk during Friday’s SmackDown and challenged him to a championship match when WWE visits Toronto on August 21. Punk accepted, putting another major match on WWE’s Canadian swing.

Punk’s championship picture became increasingly crowded throughout the night. Cody Rhodes confronted him regarding Randy Orton’s interference at SummerSlam, Sami Zayn expressed frustration with both Punk and Owens, and Orton made it clear his issues with Rhodes are far from finished.

Owens against Punk does not require much additional machinery. Both men can carry a rivalry through their personalities and history, and Toronto gives Owens an especially favorable environment for his first championship match since returning from neck surgery.

The more interesting development may be everything surrounding them. Rhodes wants another opportunity, Zayn does not appreciate being overlooked and Orton appears determined to make sure Rhodes never becomes champion again.

WWE suddenly has multiple stories orbiting the same championship without needing everyone involved in the same match.

Tatum Paxley Debuts Alongside Returning Alexa Bliss

Tatum Paxley made her SmackDown debut Friday night during the main event between Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill.

The match became increasingly chaotic when Michin and B-Fab became involved. Alexa Bliss then made her return, appearing with Lilly while still wearing a brace from her injury.

Paxley followed with the bigger surprise, attacking Michin and B-Fab and helping clear the way for Flair to defeat Cargill. Bliss, Paxley and Flair celebrated together after the match.

Pairing Paxley with Bliss makes considerable sense beyond their similar character aesthetics.

Paxley has repeatedly credited Bliss with inspiring her wrestling career, making Friday’s reveal something WWE can build around without inventing a connection between them.

Whether this becomes an actual faction with Flair remains to be seen. Either way, WWE has given Paxley something many NXT call-ups struggle to receive: an immediate association with established stars and a reason for viewers to care about what she does next.

• WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship – Fatal Influence (c) defeated Chelsea Green and Tiffany Stratton
• Charlotte Flair defeated Jade Cargill.

Next week already has several pieces in place.

Carmelo Hayes stepped forward after Corbin once again found a way past Williams, setting up another United States Championship match. Tiffany Stratton will challenge Jacy Jayne for the Women’s United States Championship, while the WWE Tag Team Championship picture will feature War Raiders, the Tongans and Damian Priest & R-Truth.

SmackDown did not overload its first post-SummerSlam episode with matches. Instead, WWE used the night to establish the rivalries that will carry the brand through August.

Vince McMahon’s Share of WWE Lawsuit Settlement Revealed

Vince McMahon and his insurers have agreed to pay $42.5 million as part of the settlement of a shareholder lawsuit stemming from WWE’s merger with UFC under TKO Group Holdings.

The litigation alleged that McMahon manipulated the sales process in a way that favored Endeavor because the arrangement allowed him to remain involved with the company following WWE’s sale.

The overall settlement had previously been reported at $375 million, with defendants not admitting wrongdoing as part of the agreement.

McMahon has been gone from WWE’s day-to-day operation for more than two years, but legal and financial matters connected to the end of his tenure continue producing significant developments.

For WWE itself, the separation is increasingly obvious on television. The company’s creative direction, presentation and roster construction have moved into a distinctly different era even as litigation tied to the previous one continues outside the ring.

CMLL Grand Prix Brings the Wrestling World Together

CMLL presented its annual International Grand Prix Friday night from a sold-out Arena México, continuing a massive week of international wrestling in Mexico City.

The 11-on-11 torneo cibernetico featured Team Mexico against Team World, with AEW, ROH, NJPW, MLW, RevPro and Maple Leaf Pro represented alongside CMLL talent.

Team World included PAC, Claudio Castagnoli, Orange Cassidy, Bandido, Roderick Strong, DOUKI, Yujiro Takahashi, Austin Aries, Blake Christian, Leon Cage and Rohan Raja.

Team Mexico featured Místico, Máscara Dorada, Hechicero, Soberano Jr., Último Guerrero, Templario, Titán, Volador Jr., Ángel de Oro, Bárbaro Cavernario and Xelhua.

The Grand Prix arriving only two nights after AEW Grand Slam Mexico demonstrates how valuable the relationship between AEW and CMLL has become.

Rather than treating international partnerships as occasional novelty appearances, the promotions are creating weeks where talent moves naturally between companies and major events.

For wrestling fans, that creates matchups that would have seemed nearly impossible only a few years ago.

Friday’s SmackDown made WWE’s direction after SummerSlam considerably clearer. Punk may be champion, but Owens, Rhodes, Zayn and eventually Orton give WWE enough credible personalities to keep that championship scene moving in several directions.

Paxley’s debut could be equally important over the long term. WWE gave her immediate visibility rather than asking viewers unfamiliar with NXT to figure out why she matters.

Outside WWE, CMLL continues showing why Mexico has become such an important piece of the international wrestling landscape. When AEW, NJPW, ROH and others can participate without CMLL sacrificing its own identity, everyone involved benefits — especially the fans watching combinations of talent they rarely get anywhere else.
