Randy Orton made his long-awaited WWE return during the Undisputed WWE Championship match between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, immediately reviving one of the most personal relationships of Rhodes’ career.

Oba Femi survived Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell, while the Bella Twins turned against Paige and SummerSlam now prepares for its second night in Minneapolis.

Randy Orton Returns and Costs Cody Rhodes the WWE Championship

Randy Orton returned during the Undisputed WWE Championship match between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. Rhodes accidentally struck the referee while attempting a Cody Cutter, leaving Punk down outside the ring and opening the door for Orton to appear.

The Viper entered the ring and dropped Rhodes with an RKO before disappearing. Punk returned, connected with another GTS and pinned Rhodes to retain the championship.

The result gives Punk a successful first defense while immediately reopening the unresolved issues between Orton and Rhodes. Orton was originally Rhodes’ mentor in Legacy, but their relationship became increasingly hostile before Orton disappeared from WWE television following WrestleMania 42.

Punk may have retained the championship without knowingly accepting Orton’s help, but Rhodes is unlikely to care about that distinction. The champion now has a controversial victory, while Orton has provided Rhodes with a more personal problem than another title loss.

WWE SummerSlam Night 1 Results — August 1, 2026

Morgan survived interference, a determined challenger and her first major title defense since WrestleMania. Solo, Knight and Keys earned a significant victory over The Bloodline, while Aldis proved he could still compete at a high level despite submitting to Gunther.

The results moved several stories forward without requiring championship changes. Punk and Morgan remain champions, but neither leaves Minneapolis without new questions surrounding the people involved in their victories.

Oba Femi Defeats Brock Lesnar and Receives His Endorsement

Oba Femi defeated Brock Lesnar in the Hell in a Cell main event, winning the rivalry’s decisive third match.

Lesnar delivered multiple F5s, attacked Femi with steel steps and used a tombstone piledriver during one of the most physical matches of the night. Femi survived the punishment and ultimately connected with the Fall from Grace to secure the victory.

Lesnar returned to the ring after the match, shook Femi’s hand and embraced him. The Beast referred to himself as the past and identified Femi as the future, creating the appearance of a passing-of-the-torch moment in Lesnar’s home state.

Lesnar did not formally announce his retirement, leaving his future uncertain despite the symbolism surrounding the conclusion.

Femi did not simply defeat Lesnar. He survived the type of match designed to establish whether he could become WWE’s next dominant heavyweight attraction.

Lesnar’s endorsement reinforces that message, but Femi must now carry the momentum into whatever comes next. Defeating The Beast creates expectations that cannot be satisfied by returning to ordinary programs.

Bella Twins Turn on Paige as Brie Bella Suffers Injury

Fatal Influence defeated Nikki Bella, Brie Bella and Paige after Jacy Jayne hit Paige with the Rolling Encore. The Bella Twins initially appeared to console Paige following the loss before attacking their partner. Nikki told Paige never to take her spot again, officially turning the Hall of Fame team against the woman who replaced her at WrestleMania.

The angle may already require an adjustment. Brie appeared to injure her right shoulder after taking a cannonball from Jayne near the steel steps and protected the arm throughout the remainder of the match.

Triple H confirmed during the SummerSlam post-show that Brie was at the hospital undergoing scans. He could not provide a diagnosis but said the injury appeared serious.

The turn established Paige against the Bella Twins, but Brie’s condition will determine whether WWE can immediately move forward with that rivalry.

Nikki could continue as a singles heel while her sister recovers, although the betrayal was clearly designed to reestablish the twins together. Paige may also need another ally if Fatal Influence remains involved.

WWE SummerSlam Night 2 Preview

SummerSlam Night 2 begins Sunday at 6 PM ET/3 PM PT from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins in the weekend’s final match. Rollins holds a narrow advantage in their career singles record and continues to claim that he understands Reigns better than anyone else in WWE.

An Interim WWE Women’s Champion will also be crowned in a five-woman ladder match. Lash Legend earned the final opening Friday and joins Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton and Chelsea Green.

Penta will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Chad Gable, while Trick Williams puts the United States Championship against the returning Baron Corbin.

Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor will compete for the next opportunity at CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. Danhausen and Dominik Mysterio will meet in a Human Monies on a Pole Match.

WWE SummerSlam Night 2 — Sunday, August 2

Reigns and Rollins carry the history and main-event position, but the ladder match may have the greatest immediate effect on weekly television. Its winner becomes champion until Rhea Ripley returns, creating a future unification match and giving SmackDown’s women’s division a temporary centerpiece.

Zayn against Bálor also gained additional importance after Saturday. The winner will challenge Punk, but Orton and Rhodes are now both positioned to remain involved in the championship picture.

SummerSlam Night 1 belonged to wrestlers confronting their pasts. Orton returned to punish Rhodes, Lesnar acknowledged that Femi had replaced him and the Bella Twins blamed Paige for taking Nikki’s opportunity.

Night 2 turns toward WWE’s immediate future. Reigns and Rollins must determine which former Shield member controls Raw, a new women’s champion will be crowned and Punk will learn the identity of his next official challenger.

The results will not close every story created during SummerSlam. They will decide which rivalries become the foundation for WWE’s direction through the remainder of the summer.
