Swerve Strickland returns on Dynamite, MJF earns the No. 2 Casino Gauntlet spot, Jim Ross’ surgery succeeds and TNA has a World Title match.

AEW’s road to Wembley took several major turns Wednesday night, including the return of Swerve Strickland and a valuable All In advantage for MJF.

Away from television came much better news: Jim Ross successfully underwent brain surgery and is expected home within days.

And for Thursday night, TNA puts its World Championship on the line.

Swerve Strickland Returns on AEW Dynamite

Swerve Strickland returned to AEW television Wednesday night in Las Vegas, confronting World Trios Champions Hangman Page, Brody King and Bandido after their championship celebration. The Demand then arrived seeking another title opportunity, while Ricochet exchanged words with the returning Swerve. Earlier in the show, Kenny Omega saved Will Ospreay from an attack by the Don Callis Family but warned Ospreay that he would not do it again.

Swerve returning less than three weeks before All In gives AEW another top-level piece at exactly the right moment.

The Hangman connection is unavoidable because AEW spent years turning those two men into mortal enemies. But throwing Swerve immediately back into the same feud would also be the easiest choice.

The more interesting question is whether his history with Hangman becomes background tension while AEW sends him somewhere entirely new.

But it’s also worth noting that the man is starting to “return” as often as Roman Reigns.

Jim Ross’ Brain Surgery Is Successful

Jim Ross underwent successful brain surgery Wednesday. Conrad Thompson said Ross’ daughter informed him that the procedure went well and that the legendary broadcaster is expected to return home by Friday, August 14. The surgery involved inserting a shunt to help manage excess brain fluid that had contributed to Ross’ recent health problems.

That is the best wrestling news of the day, even though it has almost nothing to do with wrestling.

Tuesday’s report was about hoping JR made it safely through a frightening procedure.

Wednesday supplied the update everyone wanted.

Whether Ross ever calls another match is a distant concern. Getting home Friday is the next victory.

MJF Earns the No. 2 Spot in the All In Casino Gauntlet

MJF defeated Nick Wayne and “Speedball” Mike Bailey on Dynamite to secure the No. 2 entry position in the Casino Gauntlet at All In. Elsewhere, Jon Moxley defeated Jack Perry and Jay White defeated David Finlay to advance in the Continental Challenge Cup, while TNT Champion Kevin Knight successfully defended his championship against Chris Jericho. Mercedes Moné also attacked AEW Women’s World Champion Willow Nightingale during an interview segment.

For MJF, the No. 2 draw is almost as valuable as being handed the match itself.

Casino Gauntlets are unpredictable because nobody knows when the next entrant arrives or when the match will suddenly end. Starting second gives MJF maximum opportunity to control the match before the field becomes chaos.

AEW also protected Kevin Knight’s path toward Darby Allin by getting him through Jericho without changing champions. That story now has fewer obstacles between it and Wembley.

TNA World Championship Headlines Thursday’s Impact

Nic Nemeth will defend the TNA World Championship against Jeff Hardy on Thursday’s Impact from Philadelphia. The show also features Indi Hartwell against M by Elegance in a Knockouts Television Championship Tournament semifinal, Mustafa Ali, Special Agent 0 and John Skyler against Rich Swann, BDE and a mystery partner, Eddie Edwards against KC Navarro, Brian Myers against Ricky Sosa, and a “Face of the Franchise” speech from Moose.

Nemeth against Hardy is exactly the kind of match that gives a weekly television episode an obvious reason to matter. The larger wrinkle is Lockdown.

The Hardys and Nemeths are already scheduled to collide for the Tag Team Championships, meaning Thursday’s World Title match can either intensify that rivalry or completely alter its power structure before the cage event arrives.

The mystery partner in the six-man also gives TNA an easy second hook beyond the championship main event.

Cody Rhodes and Oba Femi Get a Tag Team Title Opportunity

WWE is advertising Cody Rhodes and Oba Femi against World Tag Team Champions Bron Breakker and Austin Theory for Friday’s SmackDown event in Boston. Femi and Breakker recently confronted each other on Raw, while Rhodes and Femi previously wrestled each other to a no-contest at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025.

Cody and Oba is a fascinating pairing because WWE does not need either man to suddenly become a tag-team wrestler. This is about putting Femi beside another established main-event star while continuing the tension with Breakker.

And that is increasingly what WWE appears to understand about Oba: he does not need to be protected from the company’s biggest names anymore. He belongs in the frame with them.

Of course it probably matters very little in the end–this is almost certainly a dark match for the live crowd in Boston. Someone check WrestleTix and see how sales are going!

Wednesday’s Dynamite featured two Continental Challenge Cup matches, a TNT Championship defense and MJF’s successful attempt to secure the No. 2 Casino Gauntlet entry.

Wednesday moved several pieces toward All In without requiring AEW to announce another dozen matches.

Swerve is back. MJF now owns a meaningful advantage. Knight survived Jericho. Moxley and White moved deeper into the Continental Challenge Cup.

For wrestling fans, Thursday offers a different kind of stakes. TNA has a World Championship match on television while WWE and AEW spend the remainder of the week positioning pieces for larger destinations.

That gives viewers something valuable this time of year: major shows that do more than simply remind you the pay-per-view is coming.
