Nintendo unveils Metroid Ravenous, Persona 6 joins Switch 2 and Keanu Reeves signs on for the sci-fi adaptation Kill Current.
Nintendo spent Wednesday proving that Switch 2 is no longer living primarily on launch momentum.
A new 2D Metroid is coming in January, Persona 6 is officially heading to Nintendo hardware and Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Revelation and several other major third-party games are joining the lineup.
Outside gaming, Keanu Reeves found another science-fiction project and Amazon is experimenting with AI-powered dubbing technology.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for September 10, 2026!
Nintendo Reveals Metroid Ravenous
Nintendo announced Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D action-adventure starring Samus Aran, for Switch 2. The game launches January 28, 2027 and continues the side-scrolling style revived by Metroid Dread while adding new mechanics centered around Samus absorbing energy from enemies. Metroid returning to 2D this quickly is significant.
For years, fans waited long stretches between meaningful releases while Nintendo seemed uncertain about how much investment the franchise justified. Dread changed that conversation by demonstrating there was still a substantial audience for traditional Metroid design.
Ravenous now feels less like a revival experiment and more like Nintendo treating Metroid as an active franchise again. That may be the biggest win of the announcement.
Persona 6 Is Coming to Switch 2
Atlus confirmed that Persona 6 will launch on Switch 2 alongside previously announced PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC versions. A release date has still not been announced. Yesterday’s Steam leak made the PC version feel increasingly inevitable. Nintendo answered a different question entirely.
Persona has become one of Atlus’ most valuable global franchises, and bringing the next numbered game to Switch 2 means Nintendo players will not have to wait years for a port after everybody else has already finished discussing the story.
That also reflects the larger third-party shift happening around Switch 2.
Nintendo’s previous hardware often asked publishers to decide whether major multiplatform games could realistically survive the technical compromises required. Switch 2 is increasingly appearing in announcement lists from the beginning.
That is a healthier position for Nintendo than simply dominating through first-party exclusives.
Monster Hunter Wilds and Final Fantasy VII Revelation Join the Lineup
Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct confirmed Monster Hunter Wilds will launch for Switch 2 on December 4, while Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives April 8, 2027. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival and several Resident Evil releases were also highlighted during the presentation.
That collection may matter more than any individual announcement.
Switch 2 does not need every major game released on competing consoles. It does need enough of them that owning Nintendo hardware no longer automatically means maintaining another machine solely for large third-party releases.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation arriving on Switch 2 alongside other versions would have sounded considerably less likely during the original Switch generation.
Mega Man Brings Proto Man Back
Capcom revealed that Proto Man will be playable in Mega Man: Dual Override when the game launches in spring 2027. Proto Man uses a close-range fighting style built around his shield and melee attacks, while Mega Man remains focused more heavily on ranged combat.
Making Proto Man mechanically distinct is the right approach.
A second playable character is considerably more interesting when it changes how stages are approached rather than simply replacing the character model and weapon animations.
Mega Man has spent enough time disappearing between releases that Dual Override already carries expectations simply because it exists.
Adding Proto Man makes the project feel more ambitious than a cautious attempt to recreate familiar NES-era mechanics with modern graphics.
Keanu Reeves Signs On for Kill Current
Keanu Reeves will star in and produce Kill Current, an adaptation of the science-fiction property being developed through Two Dragonflies. Reeves is producing alongside Alexandra Grant.
Reeves has reached the point where almost every new genre project invites immediate comparisons to John Wick or The Matrix. Kill Current gives him another chance to operate closer to science fiction, where his career has always had a particularly natural home.
The more interesting part may be his producing involvement. Reeves has increasingly used the leverage created by John Wick to participate in projects beyond simply showing up as the star, giving him more influence over the kinds of stories attached to his name.
At this stage, that is probably more valuable than another franchise paycheck.
Amazon Tests AI Lip-Syncing on Maxton Hall
Amazon plans to use new AI-assisted lip-syncing technology for dubbed versions of Maxton Hall Season 3. The system is designed to make translated dialogue better match actors’ mouth movements while preserving the dubbed vocal performances.
This is one of the more practical applications of generative technology in entertainment because the objective is easy to understand.
Traditional dubbing requires translators and performers to balance meaning against visible mouth movement. If technology can improve the visual match without replacing the performers themselves, it could make international television feel considerably less distracting.
The concern will be how far the technology expands.
There is a large difference between adjusting lip movement to fit a human performance and deciding eventually that the human performance is the expensive part that can also be replaced.
Carrie Gets Bloody in First Trailer
Prime Video released the first trailer for Mike Flanagan’s television adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan among the principal cast, and the new version incorporates modern elements including cyberbullying into the familiar story.
Carrie does not exactly suffer from a lack of adaptations. That puts the burden on Flanagan to explain why this version deserves several hours rather than another feature-length retelling.
Cyberbullying is an obvious update because Carrie’s isolation and humiliation translate almost too easily into the modern environment. The danger is making the adaptation feel like somebody simply added smartphones to scenes everybody already knows.
Flanagan’s strongest Stephen King work has understood the emotional architecture underneath the supernatural material. Carrie will need the same treatment.
SNL Sets Its First Season 52 Hosts
Saturday Night Live announced Jalen Brunson, Dakota Johnson, Shane Gillis and Inde Navarrette among the hosts scheduled for Season 52. Musical guests include Katseye, Turnstile, Rosalía and Gracie Abrams.
Athletes hosting SNL can produce either unexpectedly memorable television or ninety minutes where everybody works extremely hard to hide the limitations. The lineup around him is much more conventional.
Johnson and Gillis both have extensive comedy experience, while Navarrette arrives as her profile continues rising through larger film and franchise roles.
The variety is exactly what SNL should be chasing after more than half a century: recognizable names without every week feeling like it was cast from the same part of Hollywood.
Nintendo’s Direct Changed the Switch 2 Conversation
Wednesday’s presentation also included Kirby and the World Beyond, Persona 4 Revival, Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Resident Evil releases, Metal Slug Ultimate Collection and additional content for Mario Kart World and Pokémon Pokopia.
Nintendo demonstrated that Switch 2 can support a winter and spring calendar containing its own major franchises while also carrying games from Atlus, Capcom, Square Enix and other publishers that traditionally required another platform.
That does not guarantee every port will perform well. It does change the buying decision. The original Switch was often the machine people owned alongside something else. Switch 2 increasingly looks capable of becoming the machine some people simply own.
