Blizzard unveils Diablo V

Blizzard unveils Diablo V and revives Heroes of the Storm, James Bond gets a first script draft and Venice crowns its 2026 winners.

Blizzard waited until BlizzCon to remind everyone how many dormant switches it could still flip.

Diablo V is officially coming in 2029, Heroes of the Storm is getting its first new character in six years and the Diablo universe is also heading to Netflix. Outside Anaheim, the next James Bond movie has completed its first script draft and Venice closed with a new Golden Lion winner.

It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for September 13, 2026!

Diablo V Is Coming in Spring 2029

Blizzard officially announced Diablo V during Saturday’s BlizzCon opening ceremony, setting a spring 2029 release window. The game begins from a radically different premise for the series: Diablo has already won, Sanctuary has fallen and players take the role of the Heir to Westmarch inside a world being actively reshaped by the Lord of Terror.

The early class lineup includes Demon Hunter, Monk and the new Plague Knight. Blizzard also says itemization will draw heavily from Diablo II, including larger inventory footprints, stat requirements, sets, Runes and Runewords.

Announcing a game this early can be dangerous, but Blizzard appears to understand that and is promising regular development updates beginning in 2027. That approach turns Diablo V into an ongoing conversation rather than asking players to survive years of silence after one cinematic trailer.

The premise is also strong enough to justify the sequel immediately. Diablo games usually revolve around preventing catastrophe, while Diablo V begins after catastrophe has already won.

Diablo Is Also Getting a Netflix Series

Blizzard and Netflix are developing an animated series set inside the Diablo universe. No release date or story details were announced, but Blizzard confirmed the project while revealing Diablo V and several other franchise plans at BlizzCon.

Animation feels like the safest possible format for Diablo because the franchise does not need to compromise its scale or visual identity around live-action production costs. Sanctuary should look grotesque, enormous and occasionally impossible.

The timing is also smart because Diablo is entering another expansion cycle instead of waiting until the games disappear from the conversation. A successful show can support the larger franchise rather than functioning as nostalgia between releases.

Heroes of the Storm Is Alive Again

Heroes of the Storm is receiving its first new hero since 2020, with World of Warcraft antagonist Xal’atath joining the game September 28 after hitting the PTR on September 14. Blizzard also teased that another new hero is planned, marking the most meaningful support the game has received since it entered maintenance mode.

Heroes never technically shut down, but six years without a new character made the game feel functionally complete. Bringing Xal’atath into the Nexus means Blizzard is willing to invest development resources into something most players assumed had been permanently placed on life support.

One hero does not automatically mean a full revival. The promise of another one makes this feel much less accidental.

James Bond Has a First Draft

Screenwriter Steven Knight confirmed that he has completed the first draft of the next James Bond movie. Knight, best known for creating Peaky Blinders, described writing Bond as something beyond a normal bucket-list project and said he has been enjoying the responsibility of taking on the franchise.

The casting discussion has dominated nearly everything surrounding the next Bond, but a finished first draft is arguably more important. The franchise cannot build its new identity entirely around whoever wears the tuxedo.

Knight’s involvement remains intriguing because Peaky Blinders demonstrated that he understands stylish characters whose charisma frequently hides uglier instincts. Bond requires exactly that balance if the next version wants to feel contemporary without sanding away everything difficult about the character.

Sandra Bullock Explains Why She Walked Away From Rom-Coms

Sandra Bullock said she deliberately moved away from romantic comedies in the mid-2000s because the genre was increasingly dismissed despite her success in it. In a conversation with Jennifer Aniston, Bullock also discussed refusing degrading audition demands early in her career and wanting to prove she could succeed dramatically.

The decision obviously worked. Bullock eventually won the Best Actress Oscar for The Blind Side while continuing to return periodically to comedy through films such as The Proposal and The Lost City.

Her comments also arrive at an appropriate moment with Practical Magic 2 returning her to one of the movies audiences continued embracing long after its original release. Bullock spent years proving she could escape the box Hollywood created for her, which now gives her the freedom to return to that kind of material because she wants to rather than because she has to.

Grounded 2 Comes to PlayStation 5

Obsidian’s Grounded 2 entered early access on PlayStation 5 on September 12 after previously launching in early access on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The survival sequel again shrinks players into a backyard ecosystem filled with insects, crafting systems and cooperative exploration.

An Xbox-published Obsidian game arriving on PlayStation barely qualifies as shocking anymore, and that may be the more important story. Microsoft’s platform strategy has shifted enough that another former Xbox-centric property appearing on PS5 increasingly feels normal.

Grounded is particularly well suited to that expansion because cooperative games benefit directly from larger player pools. The value of the property is not keeping somebody off another console; it is getting more people into the backyard.

Woman Unknown Wins the Golden Lion

May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown won the Golden Lion as the 83rd Venice Film Festival concluded Saturday. The film also earned Mathilde Arcel the Best Actress award, while John Malkovich won Best Actor for Wild Horse Nine and Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love received the Grand Jury Prize.

Venice has become one of the clearest starting points for awards-season momentum, even when the winners themselves are not conventional Hollywood titles. The festival can turn an internationally respected film into something much harder for voters and distributors to ignore.

Malkovich’s win is especially interesting because Wild Horse Nine already emerged from the festival with significant buzz. Venice did not simply close Saturday; it clarified which films will continue appearing in conversations for the next several months.

BlizzCon Continues Sunday

BlizzCon continues today in Anaheim with additional Diablo, World of Warcraft, esports and developer programming. Diablo IV’s Sunday panel will provide another look at the Amazon class, while World of Warcraft’s competitive events continue across the weekend.

Saturday already did the difficult part by giving Blizzard’s franchises a sense of forward motion. Diablo V is no longer theoretical, Heroes of the Storm is unexpectedly active again and several properties are expanding into other forms of entertainment.

That is what a successful publisher showcase should accomplish. People should leave talking about what the company is building next rather than only celebrating what it built 20 years ago.

Blizzard managed both.
