Friday the 13th finally has its next television form, and the first full trailer makes clear that Peacock is not treating Crystal Lake like a quiet nostalgia exercise.
Practical Magic 2 also opened the fall box office with a respectable but complicated $30 million start, while Game Freak used the weekend to announce something nobody had on the bingo card: a mobile game about doing laundry.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for September 14, 2026!
Crystal Lake Finally Shows Its Hand
Peacock released the full trailer for Crystal Lake, the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series starring Linda Cardellini. The series premieres October 15 and explores events surrounding Crystal Lake before the familiar story of Jason Voorhees became the center of the franchise.
The franchise has spent years trapped in legal complications and stalled projects, which makes simply having a finished television series feel significant. The trailer suggests the producers understand that audiences already know what eventually happens at Crystal Lake, so mystery alone cannot carry the show.
The real opportunity is atmosphere. Friday the 13th has always had an iconic setting but surprisingly little mythology beyond the Voorhees family itself, giving television considerably more room to build a community around the lake before everything goes wrong.
Practical Magic 2 Opens to $30 Million
Practical Magic 2 opened with $30 million domestically from 4,146 theaters and reached $46 million worldwide. The Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman sequel reportedly carries a production budget around $75 million, leaving Warner Bros. and Alcon dependent on strong audience legs after critics responded much less enthusiastically than moviegoers.
That opening is neither a disaster nor an automatic victory. The original Practical Magic became beloved long after its theatrical run, so the sequel was always selling nostalgia to an audience whose affection grew over decades rather than through enormous initial box-office numbers.
The encouraging sign is the audience response. Stronger viewer scores suggest the people who actually wanted another trip into this world are much happier than critics, which could matter more over the next several weekends than the opening number itself.
Spider-Man Is About to Pass The Force Awakens
Spider-Man: Brand New Day added another $8.4 million domestically during its seventh weekend, pushing its total to $935.1 million. That leaves the film positioned to pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the highest unadjusted domestic box-office total in history.
The remarkable part is how quietly the milestone approached after the initial launch frenzy. Box-office records usually dominate conversation during opening weekends, but Brand New Day has continued accumulating money deep into its run while newer releases arrived around it.
Passing The Force Awakens would also demonstrate just how durable Spider-Man remains as a theatrical property. Superhero fatigue may be real for individual projects, but the biggest characters still operate on an entirely different commercial level when audiences believe the movie is worth leaving home to see.
David Corenswet Goes From Superman to Mr. Irrelevant
Paramount released the first trailer for Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story, starring David Corenswet as the final pick of the 1983 NFL Draft. Michael Shannon plays Giants coach Bill Parcells, with Isabel May and David Krumholtz also appearing in the film ahead of its Christmas Day theatrical release.
Tuggle’s story almost feels designed for a sports movie. He went from the novelty of being the final draft pick to earning a roster spot with the Giants before receiving a cancer diagnosis that ultimately ended his life in 1986.
Corenswet moving from Superman into a grounded sports drama is also smart career management. Playing the Man of Steel can dominate an actor’s identity very quickly, and a film built around vulnerability and perseverance gives him something dramatically different without abandoning the qualities that made him convincing as Superman.
Game Freak Announces a Laundry Game
Game Freak announced Ame no Chi Hare Onna, a free-to-play mobile game for iOS and Android centered around laundry. Pokémon series veteran Shigeru Ohmori is directing and producing the project, which is being developed jointly with CHRONOGATE and is scheduled to launch this winter in Japan.
There is something encouraging about a studio associated almost entirely with one of the largest franchises in entertainment deciding to make something this strange. Game Freak has occasionally experimented outside Pokémon, but a game literally built around laundry is about as far away from catching monsters as possible.
Whether the concept has enough mechanical depth to sustain a full game remains to be seen. The announcement itself is a reminder that developers sometimes produce more interesting ideas when nobody expects the project to become the next billion-dollar franchise.
Genshin Impact 7.1 Arrives September 23
HoYoverse confirmed Genshin Impact Version 7.1, titled A Rekviem for the Underworld, will launch September 23. The update continues the Snezhnaya storyline while introducing additional characters and anniversary rewards, including opportunities to invite two five-star characters.
Six years into Genshin’s life, the scale of these updates remains impressive. HoYoverse has effectively turned what began as a live-service RPG into a serialized fantasy universe whose major updates function almost like seasonal television premieres.
The anniversary rewards are equally important because long-running gacha games eventually have to solve the problem of new and returning players feeling impossibly far behind. Giving players meaningful roster help is one way to make another year of content feel approachable.
tinyBuild Connect Takes Over Monday
tinyBuild will hold its 2026 Connect presentation today at 11 a.m. ET, promising new announcements, demos and trailers. Kingmakers will receive a 10-minute gameplay presentation, while The Lift, Graveyard Keeper 2, Hozy, Of Ash and Steel and SAND: Raiders of Sophie are also scheduled to appear.
Kingmakers remains the obvious centerpiece because its combination of medieval warfare and modern weapons generated immediate attention when it was revealed. The long gameplay segment should provide a much better indication of whether the idea functions beyond the absurdity of watching somebody bring automatic weapons into a medieval battle.
The wider lineup matters too. Publisher showcases work best when the recognizable project brings people in and the smaller games leave with new audiences, which gives tinyBuild several opportunities to turn Monday into more than one long Kingmakers commercial.
The weekend produced a useful snapshot of how entertainment properties survive. Crystal Lake is expanding a horror franchise that has existed for nearly half a century, Practical Magic returned because its audience never stopped loving the original and Spider-Man is approaching another historic theatrical milestone.
Game Freak represents the opposite instinct. Instead of reaching backward, it announced a laundry game because apparently somebody decided that sounded fun enough to build.
Both approaches can work. Familiarity gets attention, but weird ideas are often what keep the larger entertainment landscape from becoming nothing but sequels.
