Netflix spent years trying to establish itself in gaming. This week, its most-watched piece of programming was about a game somebody else made.

Grand Theft Auto VI produced an enormous audience for its extended preview, Marvel added another actor to Avengers: Secret Wars and Insomniac revealed how a research trip through Japan helped shape Marvel’s Wolverine.

GTA VI Becomes Netflix’s Most-Watched Title

Rockstar Games’ 27-minute Grand Theft Auto VI extended preview generated 31.1 million views on Netflix during its first week, making it the streaming service’s most-watched title globally for the period. The gaming presentation finished ahead of every movie and television series on Netflix’s weekly rankings.

There are video game trailers that generate enormous numbers on YouTube, but putting a nearly half-hour gameplay presentation at the top of Netflix’s global rankings changes the scale of the conversation.

Netflix has spent years trying to establish a meaningful position in gaming through mobile releases, acquisitions and cloud technology. Rockstar just demonstrated another possibility: gaming events themselves can become streaming programming.

The number also reinforces how unusual GTA VI has become as a cultural event. Rockstar can release 27 minutes of people talking about and demonstrating a video game and compete directly with television shows and movies for attention.

Noah Jupe Joins Avengers: Secret Wars

Noah Jupe has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars in an undisclosed role. The A Quiet Place and Hamnet actor becomes the latest addition to the second half of the Russo brothers’ two-film Avengers event.

The undisclosed character immediately creates the usual Marvel guessing game, particularly for a movie expected to pull characters from multiple generations and corners of the Marvel universe.

Jupe is also young enough that Marvel could be thinking beyond Secret Wars. The MCU is gradually introducing another generation of characters alongside its established stars, and casting an actor with Jupe’s résumé in a mystery role naturally raises questions about whether this is intended as a one-movie appearance or the beginning of something larger.

Secret Wars already carries the burden of resolving a massive multiverse story. Every new casting announcement makes the movie feel even bigger, which is exciting right up until Marvel has to make all of those characters fit inside one coherent film.

Insomniac Took Wolverine to Japan

Insomniac Games revealed that members of the Marvel’s Wolverine development team traveled through Japan to scan locations, textures and environmental references for the upcoming PlayStation 5 game. The research included capturing real-world architecture and natural environments that could be incorporated into Logan’s journey.

Wolverine and Japan have decades of comic-book history together, so using the country as more than an interchangeable action-game backdrop matters.

Physical reference gathering can also provide the environmental details players notice without consciously recognizing them. Streets, vegetation, buildings and surfaces feel more believable when artists are working from actual locations instead of approximating what they think Japan should look like.

Insomniac already demonstrated with Spider-Man that understanding a location can become part of understanding the superhero who moves through it. Wolverine gives the studio an opportunity to apply that philosophy somewhere far removed from Manhattan.

Halloween: The Game Reveals East Haddonfield

IllFonic provided the first detailed look at East Haddonfield, one of the maps in Halloween: The Game. The asymmetrical horror game allows players to either become Michael Myers or work together as residents attempting to survive him, with East Haddonfield designed around residential spaces, backyards and locations that can turn familiar suburban environments into hunting grounds.

Michael Myers works because Haddonfield never feels like somewhere people should be fighting a supernatural killer. It looks like somewhere people should be walking dogs and handing out candy.

That makes environmental design unusually important here. A Halloween game filled with generic horror corridors would miss the entire appeal of the property, while ordinary houses, fences, streets and backyards can create tension simply because players understand exactly how little protection those places provide.

Asymmetrical horror games have become crowded territory, so the license alone will not carry Halloween. Making Haddonfield itself part of the experience gives IllFonic a better chance of separating Michael Myers from the killers already stalking multiplayer lobbies.

Tulsa King Season 4 Sets October Premiere

Paramount+ announced that Tulsa King Season 4 will premiere October 16 and released the first teaser for the next chapter of Sylvester Stallone’s crime series. Stallone returns as Dwight Manfredi as the series continues expanding the criminal organization he built after being exiled from New York.

Tulsa King has become one of the more durable pieces of Taylor Sheridan’s television machine because it does not pretend Stallone is anything other than the reason people showed up initially.

The series then built enough characters and relationships around him that Dwight’s operation became larger than the original fish-out-of-water premise. Season 4 now has the challenge of keeping that expansion interesting without turning every year into another slightly larger collection of enemies.

October gives Paramount+ another established franchise during a crowded fall television season, and Stallone remains one of the easiest faces in streaming to market.

Moana Heads Home in September

Disney’s live-action Moana will become available to buy or rent digitally on September 8, followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on October 6.

The window between theatrical release and home availability continues shrinking into something audiences can almost plan around. Successful movies can spend months accumulating theatrical revenue while studios simultaneously prepare the next monetization cycle.

Moana is especially suited to that model because Disney is not relying on a single viewing. Families repeatedly watching the movie at home are part of the long-term value of the property, just as they were with the animated version.

The physical release also remains relevant for Disney’s largest franchises even as streaming dominates everyday viewing. Collectors may be a smaller market than they once were, but movies like Moana are exactly the titles studios still have incentive to package for them.

Elden Ring Arrives on Switch 2

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition launched September 1 for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing FromSoftware’s open-world RPG to Nintendo hardware with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, additional armor and new Torrent customization options included.

The important part is not that Elden Ring exists on another platform. It is what games like Elden Ring appearing on Switch 2 say about Nintendo’s new hardware.

The original Switch frequently received compromised versions of major third-party games, late ports or nothing at all because developers could not reasonably make the hardware accommodate them. Switch 2 has an opportunity to change that relationship.

If demanding games can arrive without feeling like technical curiosities, Nintendo becomes much easier to consider as a primary console rather than the machine players keep beside another platform for exclusives.

September Starts Fast

The first weeks after Gamescom have immediately shifted attention from demonstrations toward releases and concrete announcements. GTA VI turned a gameplay presentation into Netflix’s biggest program of the week, Wolverine continues revealing how Insomniac is constructing its world and Elden Ring is already testing what Nintendo’s new hardware can do with one of the previous generation’s defining games.

That transition is healthy after a convention built around promises. Trailers establish possibilities; released games, audience numbers and finished products establish whether those possibilities actually mattered…and September already has plenty of both.
