Resident Evil heads toward a franchise-record opening, Tokyo Game Show cancels its final day and Prime Video drops Ride or Die.
Resident Evil has officially moved beyond a promising preview night and into legitimate breakout territory.
Zach Cregger’s reboot posted a franchise-record opening day and is now tracking toward nearly $60 million for the weekend, while Tokyo Game Show has been forced to cancel its planned fifth day because of an approaching typhoon. Prime Video also pulled the plug on Ride or Die after one season.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for September 20, 2026!
Resident Evil Heads Toward a Franchise Record
Resident Evil earned approximately $26 million on Friday and is now projected to open between $53 million and $60 million domestically. Either end of that range would establish the largest opening weekend in the history of the Resident Evil film franchise.
That result would validate Sony’s decision to approach the adaptation differently. Zach Cregger built the movie around horror and atmosphere rather than trying to revive the action-heavy style of the earlier films, giving longtime game players something that feels more recognizably connected to Capcom’s original identity.
The real test comes after Sunday. Strong previews and an opening-day rush show curiosity, but a sustained theatrical run would demonstrate that audiences believe this version deserves to become the new foundation for the movie franchise.
Tokyo Game Show Cancels Its Planned Fifth Day
Organizers canceled Tokyo Game Show’s September 21 programming because an approaching typhoon is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and potential disruption to public transportation around Chiba. The fifth day had been added as part of the show’s 30th-anniversary expansion, making 2026 the first planned five-day Tokyo Game Show.
Canceling a major trade-show day is expensive and disruptive, but the reasoning is straightforward when hundreds of thousands of people could be trying to leave Makuhari Messe during deteriorating weather.
The cancellation also puts more pressure on Sunday’s schedule because it unexpectedly becomes the final day. Publishers that planned demonstrations, meetings or audience engagement for Monday now have considerably less room to work with.
Persona 4 Revival Shows More of Inaba
Atlus used its latest Persona 4 Revival broadcast to reveal additional characters, locations and Location Episodes for the remake. The presentation continued the company’s slow rollout of a game that is rebuilding one of Persona’s most beloved casts for modern platforms.
The Location Episode system is particularly interesting because Persona 4’s appeal has always been tied as much to spending time around Inaba as solving the central murder mystery. Expanding those interactions gives Atlus a way to make the remake feel richer without fundamentally rewriting the story people already love.
That balance will determine whether Revival feels necessary. Better graphics alone would not justify rebuilding Persona 4 again after Golden remained widely accessible for years, but additional character material potentially can.
Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered Gets a Demo
Koei Tecmo will release a demo for Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered on September 24. The publisher also confirmed a post-launch update will add online two-player functionality to the rebuilt version of the classic musou game.
Dynasty Warriors 3 remains one of the entries most responsible for defining what the series became, which gives this remaster more historical value than simply polishing another old sequel.
Online co-op is also a smart addition because the repetitive chaos of Dynasty Warriors becomes much easier to appreciate when another person is sharing the battlefield. That feature may ultimately do more to modernize the experience than the visual overhaul.
Prime Video Cancels Ride or Die
Prime Video canceled Ride or Die after one season. The action-adventure series starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer is reportedly being shopped to other platforms by Paramount Television.
The cast makes the cancellation notable because Waddingham and Spencer gave the series recognizable stars before it ever premiered. That was not enough to guarantee another season in a streaming environment increasingly driven by completion rates, cost and subscriber impact rather than name recognition alone.
Being shopped elsewhere at least leaves the door slightly open. Streaming cancellations no longer automatically mean a project is completely dead, although finding another buyer is considerably more difficult than the phrase makes it sound.
Sweet Magnolias Ends After Five Seasons
Netflix canceled Sweet Magnolias after five seasons as showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson shifts toward another drama project at the streamer. JoAnna Garcia Swisher is reportedly being considered to lead the new project, Ladies of the House.
Five seasons is a substantial run in the current streaming environment, where many shows struggle to survive long enough to develop that kind of continuity. Ending Sweet Magnolias while maintaining the creative relationship with Anderson suggests Netflix views the partnership as more valuable than extending one franchise indefinitely.
That is closer to how traditional television studios once worked with successful producers. The show may end, but the people responsible for keeping audiences engaged remain part of the system.
HBO Orders The Spread With Javier Bardem
HBO ordered The Spread, a new drama starring and executive produced by Javier Bardem. The series is set in a rapidly changing Miami financial world where enormous wealth, hedge funds, competition and nightlife collide around a powerful billionaire.
The project sounds designed for the audience that helped make Succession and Industry successful without simply copying either one. Money provides the setting, but the real appeal will depend on the personalities operating inside it.
Bardem immediately gives the series a recognizable center. HBO winning a bidding war also suggests the network views The Spread as something more ambitious than another slot-filling drama.
Saturday produced a strange combination of expansion and contraction across entertainment. Resident Evil is suddenly positioned to grow into another major horror franchise, Persona 4 is being rebuilt with additional content and Dynasty Warriors is modernizing an old favorite.
At the same time, a typhoon literally shortened Tokyo Game Show while two streaming series learned that recognizable casts and established audiences do not guarantee indefinite runs.
