Sunday’s entertainment cycle was quieter than the previous few days, but the stories that did break carried some weight.
Avengers: Endgame proved a six-year-old superhero movie can still dominate theaters, Robert Pattinson gave a fairly clear explanation for why his Batman belongs outside James Gunn’s wider DC Universe, and Anna Kendrick confirmed she is moving deeper behind the camera with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Gaming also offered a smaller horror release worth watching while Monday brings a strong combination of anime, television and Minecraft.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for September 28, 2026!
Avengers: Endgame Wins the Weekend Again
Avengers: Endgame Encore topped the domestic box office with approximately $26 million, turning Marvel’s theatrical re-release into considerably more than a nostalgia screening. The movie also generated roughly $86 million worldwide during its return, adding another sizable chunk to one of the highest-grossing theatrical runs in history.
That is a substantial jump from the Thursday preview numbers we discussed in Saturday’s report and makes the re-release worth revisiting. Audiences did not simply show up for one night; they treated Endgame like a legitimate weekend event despite the movie being widely available at home for years.
Marvel could not have asked for a cleaner piece of marketing ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. Endgame remains the clearest example of what the MCU looks like when years of interconnected storytelling successfully converge, and Disney just received another reminder that the attachment to that era has not disappeared.
Robert Pattinson Does Not See His Batman Joining the DCU
Robert Pattinson said it would be difficult to move his version of Batman into the larger DC Universe being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Pattinson pointed specifically to the distinctive tone of Matt Reeves’ Batman films, arguing that this interpretation of Bruce Wayne is heavily tied to the world surrounding him.
That position matches DC Studios’ current approach. Reeves’ Batman universe remains an Elseworlds property separate from the continuity that includes Superman, Lanterns and the eventual Batman planned for The Brave and the Bold.
The occasional speculation about merging the two versions probably will not disappear, particularly while Pattinson remains one of DC’s most visible stars. His comments nevertheless reinforce why separating them makes creative sense: Reeves built Gotham around a very specific crime-noir atmosphere, and suddenly dropping that Batman beside gods, aliens and Green Lanterns could fundamentally change what makes those movies distinct.
Anna Kendrick Is Directing The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Anna Kendrick confirmed at the Zurich Film Festival that she is directing Netflix’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Kendrick described herself as “over the moon” about the project, which follows her directorial debut on Woman of the Hour.
Liz Tigelaar is attached to the screenplay, with Francesca Sloane contributing revisions and Reid involved as an executive producer. The adaptation has been one of Netflix’s more closely watched book projects because the novel has maintained an enormous readership well beyond its original 2017 publication.
Kendrick moving directly into another substantial directing assignment is arguably more interesting than attaching another recognizable actor to the movie. Woman of the Hour established that she was not treating directing as a novelty, and Evelyn Hugo gives her something significantly different in scale, period storytelling and emotional structure.
Shinjuku Anomaly Turns Night Photography Into Horror
AMATA Games announced that Shinjuku Anomaly will launch for PC via Steam on September 30. The short horror visual novel puts players into a nighttime photography job in Shinjuku where they must document supernatural anomalies while following a handful of deceptively simple rules.
The central mechanic is built around deciding how closely to approach whatever abnormal thing appears before taking the photograph. Get close enough to capture evidence, but not so close that the anomaly becomes the bigger problem.
It is a much smaller release than most games featured in these reports, but the premise is exactly the kind of focused horror concept that can travel quickly through streaming and social media if it works. Games such as Exit 8 demonstrated how effective ordinary Japanese urban spaces can become when something slightly wrong begins appearing inside them.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Comes to Netflix and Hulu Monday
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle begins streaming Monday on Netflix and Hulu in the United States. The film continues directly from the Hashira Training Arc and launches the trilogy intended to bring the anime’s central story toward its conclusion.
Infinity Castle arrived with considerably more importance than the usual anime movie because it is not a compilation or side story. It advances the main narrative, meaning anyone following Demon Slayer eventually has to watch it rather than treating the theatrical release as optional material.
The streaming debut also gives the movie another enormous audience after its theatrical run. Demon Slayer has already demonstrated that anime films can operate as legitimate global box-office events, and moving Infinity Castle onto two large American streaming platforms extends that reach considerably.
Minecraft Dungeons II Arrives as a Big Week of Games Begins
Minecraft Dungeons II is scheduled to launch Monday across Xbox platforms with Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere support, beginning a crowded week that also includes TOEM 2, Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, End of Abyss and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve over the following several days.
Dungeons II becomes more interesting after Mojang’s weekend reveal of the Sift, the new Minecraft dimension we covered in yesterday’s report. The sequel will effectively provide the first opportunity to explore that environment before a version of the Sift eventually reaches the main Minecraft game.
September has been unusually dense for game releases because publishers are trying to create distance from Grand Theft Auto VI later this fall. The final few days of the month are not easing off much, and the transition into October is even busier.
What to Watch Monday
Monday also brings the Season 14 finale of Futurama on Hulu, giving the revived series another stopping point before its next batch of episodes. Hulu will also carry the latest It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode Monday night, while Demon Slayer provides the largest new movie arrival of the day.
There is enough happening Monday to justify the viewing section this time. Demon Slayer is the obvious centerpiece, but the Futurama finale creates a second recognizable genre title without forcing a collection of minor streaming additions into the report.
Sunday’s news ultimately had a strong theme running through it: established properties deciding how much of their identity should remain intact as they move forward.
Pattinson sees Reeves’ Batman as something that works because of the world surrounding him. Kendrick is taking on a hugely popular novel that already arrives with a very defined audience. Even Endgame’s re-release succeeded because people wanted to revisit a version of Marvel that felt complete rather than simply sampling another superhero movie.
The interesting challenge for all of these franchises is the same. Familiarity can bring people back, but keeping them requires understanding which parts of the original appeal cannot simply be swapped out.
