Bandwagon Nerds News Report (9/4/2026): Final Fantasy Gets Its Date, Wolverine Gets Ready & The Kane Chronicles Lives Again
Final Fantasy VII Revelation gets a release date, Wolverine drops its launch trailer, Kane Chronicles moves to Disney+ and Lanterns keeps growing.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation gets a release date, Wolverine drops its launch trailer, Kane Chronicles moves to Disney+ and Lanterns keeps growing.
PlayStation apparently decided September needed about 30 more stories.
Thursday’s double State of Play delivered the release date for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a launch trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, Until Dawn 2 news, another Metro game, a LEGO PlayStation and enough announcements to fill an entire report by itself.
Away from gaming, Rick Riordan’s Kane Chronicles has found another chance at Disney+, while Lanterns continues doing something every television series wants to see after its premiere: growing.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for September 4, 2026!
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Arrives April 8
Square Enix announced during Thursday’s State of Play that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch April 8, 2027, on PlayStation 5, completing the three-game Final Fantasy VII remake project. The presentation showed expanded exploration involving the Highwind, grapple guns and chocobos along with additional looks at the game’s combat and synergy systems.
After years of wondering how Square Enix could possibly remake Final Fantasy VII across three enormous games, there is finally a date attached to the ending.
Revelation now has an unusual challenge. It needs to function as the conclusion of the Remake trilogy while simultaneously reaching the portion of the original game where expectations about what “remake” actually means become increasingly complicated.
Remake taught players that history could change. Rebirth made the consequences even harder to interpret.
Revelation finally has to provide answers.
April 8 is when we find out whether Square Enix spent three games retelling Final Fantasy VII or building something that ultimately becomes its own story.
Marvel’s Wolverine Gets Its Launch Trailer
Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine received a new launch trailer during State of Play ahead of its September 15 release on PlayStation 5. The footage provided additional looks at Logan’s relationship with Jean Grey, members of Team X and several allies and enemies appearing in the game.
At this point, Wolverine doesn’t need another giant reveal. It needs to be good.
The long marketing cycle has already established the violence, Japan setting, supporting characters and Insomniac’s willingness to make Logan feel substantially different from Spider-Man. The final trailer can finally stop explaining what the game is supposed to be and simply remind everyone that it’s less than two weeks away.
Until Dawn 2 Gets a January Release Date
Firesprite’s Until Dawn 2 will launch January 28, 2027, on PlayStation 5. The new trailer showed the Dead True crew investigating supernatural events at Blackwood Sanatorium and Akishima Island, with the sequel again emphasizing player decisions and their consequences. Firesprite is developing the game alongside AdHoc Studio.
Until Dawn has always worked because the player knows somebody’s terrible decision is probably coming — and occasionally gets to make it personally.
A direct sequel has to preserve that tension without simply reproducing the first game’s structure with different victims. Moving between Blackwood and Akishima immediately expands the scale, while AdHoc’s involvement is particularly interesting given the studio’s experience with choice-driven storytelling.
January also gives Sony a recognizable horror release outside the obvious Halloween window. Apparently terrible decisions can happen year-round.
Metro 2039 Sends the Series Back to Moscow
4A Games revealed PS5 Pro gameplay for Metro 2039 during State of Play and announced a February 4, 2027 release date. The single-player survival shooter follows a mysterious character known as the Stranger through post-apocalyptic Moscow, with exploration, stealth, survival and combat again forming the core of the experience.
Metro going back to Moscow feels less like retreating and more like returning home.
Exodus demonstrated that the franchise could work outside the tunnels, but Moscow remains inseparable from Metro’s identity. A new protagonist also gives 4A room to revisit that setting without simply repeating Artyom’s journey.
The best Metro games make every bullet feel valuable and every trip away from safety feel like a bad idea. A more powerful console shouldn’t make that world feel comfortable. Yes, There’s a LEGO PlayStation
Sony and LEGO revealed a 1,911-piece recreation of the original PlayStation console and controller during State of Play. The set is nearly 1:1 scale, measures approximately 10.5 inches wide when assembled and launches October 1.
This is the exact point where 1990s gaming nostalgia becomes home décor.
The original PlayStation is also an almost perfect LEGO subject because the hardware itself is recognizable without requiring an enormous display piece. Anybody who grew up putting discs into that gray box will immediately understand what it is from across the room.
The children who begged their parents for a PlayStation in 1995 are now adults who can apparently buy a second PlayStation that doesn’t actually play anything.
Sony and LEGO know exactly what they’re doing.
The Kane Chronicles Gets Another Life at Disney+
A live-action adaptation of Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles is now in development at Disney+, with Riordan and Angela Robinson attached to write and executive produce. The project previously spent years in development at Netflix as a planned film series before those plans were abandoned. The books follow siblings Carter and Sadie Kane and center on Egyptian mythology rather than the Greek mythology at the heart of Percy Jackson.
Disney is making the obvious move here.
Percy Jackson has given the company an established Riordan audience, and Kane Chronicles allows Disney+ to expand that relationship without simply producing another Percy Jackson spinoff featuring slightly different demigods.
Egyptian mythology gives the series its own identity while Riordan’s involvement provides the continuity that fans wanted from adaptations of his work in the first place.
Netflix couldn’t get the movies across the finish line. Disney now has the chance to turn Riordan’s books into an actual connected television universe.
Lanterns Keeps Getting Bigger
The third episode of DC Studios’ Lanterns drew 10 million viewers globally on HBO Max during its first three days, marking a new series high. The episode, which focused heavily on Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, continued an upward viewership trend rather than the typical post-premiere decline.
That last part is what matters.
Big franchise shows frequently premiere to enormous curiosity numbers and then spend the following weeks demonstrating how many of those people actually intend to stick around. Lanterns moving in the opposite direction suggests word of mouth is bringing people in rather than simply preventing viewers from leaving.
That’s particularly valuable for DC because Lanterns isn’t Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman.
If the broader DC Universe is going to work, characters outside the company’s three biggest icons need to become attractions themselves.
Three episodes isn’t enough to declare victory. Ten million people moving in the right direction is a pretty good start.
State of Play Had a Lot More
Thursday’s two PlayStation presentations covered more than 30 games, making several announcements worth keeping on the radar even beyond the biggest reveals.

- Maneater 2 – Coming to PS5 in 2027

What to Watch
The immediate calendar is unusually busy.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie arrives September 18, and DC celebrates Batman Day on September 19 with Batman of Two Worlds, pairing new Batman and Absolute Batman stories in one release.
Then October starts bringing the next wave of PlayStation releases and expansions revealed Thursday.
That makes September feel less like the traditional beginning of the fall entertainment season and more like somebody forgot there was supposed to be a transition period.
Thursday’s State of Play was the biggest story dump, but the more interesting developments may be happening elsewhere. Kane Chronicles getting another opportunity shows Disney recognizing that Percy Jackson can potentially become a larger mythology franchise, while Lanterns increasing its audience gives DC evidence that its universe can generate interest without leaning exclusively on Batman and Superman.
And gaming has moved beyond wondering when Wolverine is coming. It’s eleven days away.
For once, the biggest games in a presentation weren’t distant promises. Several are close enough that we’ll know very soon whether the excitement was justified.
