Jayden Daniels may need offseason elbow surgery, the Giants release Odell Beckham Jr. and Jalen Ramsey plans to play with a broken wrist.
Washington received a complicated update on Jayden Daniels Tuesday. The Commanders still expect their franchise quarterback to return this season, but the dislocated elbow that has already cost him time may eventually require surgery.
Elsewhere, the Giants ended Odell Beckham Jr.’s second stint with the franchise after only three games, Jalen Ramsey revealed he suffered a broken wrist and Tampa Bay’s already battered offense lost Jalen McMillan for another extended stretch.
It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for September 30, 2026!
Jayden Daniels May Need Offseason Elbow Surgery
Washington’s decision not to place Jayden Daniels on injured reserve remains a sign that the Commanders expect him back relatively soon, but Tuesday brought a new long-term concern. Daniels may ultimately need surgery to repair the left elbow he dislocated in Week 2, although any procedure would be delayed until after the season.
The current plan remains for Daniels to return as soon as he is medically able. That distinction matters because surgery becoming a possibility does not mean Washington has changed its expectation for 2026; it means the organization may be managing an injury that can function well enough for Daniels to play before being fully repaired after the season.
Marcus Mariota gave Washington considerably more breathing room by throwing three touchdown passes in Sunday’s 33-31 victory over Seattle. The Commanders are 1-2 and travel to London to face Indianapolis this week, so another competent performance from Mariota would make patience with Daniels considerably easier.
Washington will already be shorthanded overseas. Guard Samuel Cosmi and safety Nick Cross have been ruled out and will not travel to London, while linebacker Leo Chenal has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a neck fracture against Seattle.
Austin Ekeler Officially Returns to Washington
The Commanders also completed the return of Austin Ekeler Tuesday, officially signing the veteran running back back to the active roster. Ekeler spent the previous two seasons in Washington before a torn Achilles ended his 2025 season after only two games.
The move had been developing Monday, but Tuesday made it official and puts Ekeler into an offense that could use another experienced outlet while Daniels remains sidelined. Washington has received 142 rushing yards from Jacory Croskey-Merritt and another 100 from Rachaad White through three games, but neither has established complete control of the backfield.
Ekeler does not need to become Washington’s primary runner to help. His receiving ability and experience in pass protection give Mariota another option underneath, and those snaps could remain useful whenever Daniels returns.
The Commanders are dealing with enough injuries elsewhere that adding a proven offensive player matters. Chenal’s season is over, Cosmi and Cross will miss London and several other defenders remain uncertain, making Washington’s depth a major Week 4 storyline.
Giants Release Odell Beckham Jr.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s return to New York lasted only three regular-season games. The Giants released the veteran receiver Tuesday after he played just 19 offensive snaps during his second stint with the franchise.
Beckham returned to the Giants during the offseason after sitting out the entire 2025 season, making his reunion with the franchise that drafted him one of the more interesting stories of training camp. It never translated into a meaningful regular-season role.
New York instead signed Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones to the active roster Tuesday. The moves continue a significant reshaping of the Giants only three weeks into the season, following the season-ending injuries to Jaxson Dart and Brian Burns and Monday’s trade for J.J. McCarthy.
Beckham’s name will naturally create interest if he wants to continue playing, but the Giants’ decision is revealing. A 2-1 team dealing with significant injuries still decided that its roster spot was more valuable elsewhere.
Jalen Ramsey Has Broken Wrist, Still Wants to Play Thursday
Pittsburgh could enter Thursday Night Football with Jalen Ramsey playing through a broken wrist. Ramsey revealed Tuesday that he suffered the injury during Sunday’s 30-27 victory over Cincinnati but still hopes to play against Cleveland.
Ramsey was listed as limited Tuesday while wearing protection on the injured wrist. The Steelers have not ruled him out, leaving his status as one of the biggest questions heading into the short-week AFC North matchup.
Pittsburgh could also be getting Joey Porter Jr. closer to his season debut. Porter was listed as a full participant for the second consecutive day as he works back from the back injury that wiped out his training camp and first three regular-season games.
Running back Rico Dowdle remains a larger concern. He was listed as a non-participant for the second straight day because of his toe injury after already missing Sunday’s victory over Cincinnati.
The Steelers are 2-1 and Cleveland is 2-1, which gives Thursday night immediate divisional significance. Pittsburgh potentially adding Porter while asking Ramsey to play through a fracture could dramatically change the look of a secondary that has spent September dealing with injuries.
Jalen McMillan Expected to Miss Six to Eight Weeks
Tampa Bay’s offensive injury situation continues to deteriorate. Jalen McMillan is expected to miss six to eight weeks after aggravating a PCL injury in his left knee during Sunday’s 23-16 loss to Minnesota.
McMillan originally injured the knee during the summer and had yet to record a reception through two appearances this season. The latest setback now removes another receiving option from an offense that is already preparing to play without Baker Mayfield for at least three weeks because of his dislocated thumb.
Emeka Egbuka leads Tampa Bay with 13 catches for 141 yards, and his role should continue growing while the Buccaneers attempt to piece together an offense around rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels.
Tampa Bay also agreed to a one-year deal with safety Ifeatu Melifonwu Tuesday and brought quarterback Brett Rypien in for a visit. At 0-3, the Buccaneers are already facing an uphill climb, and the number of injuries surrounding the offense is making the margin for recovery even smaller.
Patriots Lose Another Offensive Lineman
New England placed veteran guard Greg Van Roten on injured reserve Tuesday after he suffered a thigh injury in Sunday’s 35-6 loss to Jacksonville. Van Roten had stepped into the lineup after Mike Onwenu suffered a broken ankle the previous week.
That means the Patriots have now lost consecutive starting guards to injured reserve in a two-week span. Van Roten must miss at least four games, further weakening an offensive line that was already one of New England’s biggest concerns.
The Patriots are 1-2 and head to Buffalo this weekend against a Bills team that has opened 3-0. Asking Drake Maye to operate behind another reshuffled offensive line makes an already difficult road matchup considerably tougher.
New England’s 35-6 loss in Jacksonville was ugly enough without additional consequences. Losing the replacement for an injured starter illustrates how quickly depth can disappear when injuries begin stacking at the same position.
Vikings Put Josh Oliver on Injured Reserve, Add Kyle Van Noy
Minnesota placed tight end Josh Oliver on injured reserve Tuesday following the arm injury he suffered against Tampa Bay. Oliver will miss at least four games, creating another offensive absence for a Vikings team already monitoring Justin Jefferson’s sprained ankle.
Minnesota also added veteran edge rusher Kyle Van Noy to the active roster and promoted quarterback Max Brosmer. The Van Noy signing gives the 3-0 Vikings another experienced pass rusher as they attempt to build on the league’s best possible start.
Jefferson avoided a major ankle injury and remains a possibility for Sunday against Miami, but Minnesota has little reason to force the issue if he is not ready. The Vikings have already built a three-game cushion over .500 and face a Dolphins team that has opened 0-3.
That is a much different position than Tampa Bay or Miami currently occupies. Minnesota has injuries to manage, but its undefeated start gives the coaching staff room to make decisions based on October and November rather than desperation in Week 4.
Panthers Lose Damien Lewis for Multiple Weeks
Carolina will be without starting left guard Damien Lewis for at least the immediate future after he suffered a UCL injury in his elbow during Sunday’s 21-18 loss to Cleveland. Lewis is expected to miss multiple weeks.
The Panthers host Detroit on Sunday night before entering their bye, creating a natural recovery window. There is optimism that Lewis could potentially return in Week 6 against Philadelphia if his rehabilitation progresses well.
Carolina promoted Torricelli Simpkins III from the practice squad Tuesday to help address the offensive-line depth. Lewis has started every game he has played since entering the NFL in 2020, so replacing him involves more than simply finding another healthy lineman.
The Panthers are 1-2 and now face a Detroit team that has won consecutive games after dropping its opener. Protecting Bryce Young was already central to Carolina’s ability to compete; losing one of the line’s most dependable veterans makes that job harder.
Thursday Night Football Begins to Take Shape
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns — Thursday, 8:15 PM ET
Week 4 begins with an AFC North matchup between two 2-1 teams, but both enter the short week with significant injury questions.
Cleveland center Elgton Jenkins missed Tuesday’s practice estimate because of a concussion, while wide receiver Tylan Wallace also remained out with a knee injury. Tytus Howard, Teven Jenkins, Tyson Campbell and Grant Delpit were listed as limited.
Pittsburgh’s attention will center on Ramsey’s broken wrist and whether Porter can make his season debut. If both cornerbacks are available, the Steelers’ secondary could suddenly look considerably stronger than it did through the opening weeks despite Ramsey playing through an obvious limitation.
Three weeks of football have already changed what several teams thought their seasons would look like. Washington is balancing Daniels’ short-term return against a possible offseason surgery, Tampa Bay has lost its starting quarterback and another receiver, and New England is running out of healthy answers along the offensive line.
The Giants may be the clearest example of how quickly plans can change. Dart and Burns are done for the year, McCarthy arrived Monday and Beckham was gone Tuesday.
Week 4 begins tomorrow night, and roster depth is no longer an abstract preseason talking point. For several teams, it has already become the defining issue of the season.
