CM Punk defends against Sami Zayn in Mexico City, Oba Femi creates backstage discussion and TripleManía begins its historic two-night run.
CM Punk defends against Sami Zayn in Mexico City, Oba Femi creates backstage discussion and TripleManía begins its historic two-night run.
Friday is going to be busy.
WWE brings SmackDown to Mexico City with CM Punk defending the Undisputed WWE Championship against Sami Zayn, while AAA begins the first two-night TripleManía in company history several hours later in Las Vegas.
Away from the advertised cards, Oba Femi generated some unexpected backstage discussion this week and WWE is letting fans choose one of the faces of WWE 2K27.
It’s the Chairshot Wrestling News Report for September 11, 2026!
CM Punk Defends Against Sami Zayn in Mexico City
CM Punk will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Sami Zayn tonight when SmackDown airs from Arena CDMX in Mexico City. The show will also feature Chelsea Green defending the Interim WWE Women’s Championship against Nia Jax, Paige facing Nikki Bella, War Raiders defending the AAA World Tag Team Championship against Damian Priest and R-Truth, and Ricky Saints challenging Rey Fenix for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship.
- Undisputed WWE Championship – CM Punk (c) vs. Sami Zayn
- Interim WWE Women’s Championship – Chelsea Green (c) vs. Nia Jax
- Paige vs. Nikki Bella
- AAA World Tag Team Championship – War Raiders (c) vs. Damian Priest & R-Truth
- AAA World Cruiserweight Championship – Rey Fenix (c) vs. Ricky Saints
Punk-Zayn has moved from disruption to championship match remarkably quickly. Sami spent weeks inserting himself into Punk’s business until the champion finally decided to stop arguing and give him exactly what he claimed to want.
The location makes it feel larger. WWE has treated Mexico City as a destination throughout this stretch rather than simply another television stop, and putting a world championship defense at the top reinforces that.
Oba Femi’s Raw Reaction Wasn’t Scripted?
Oba Femi brushing Bronson Reed’s foot off his body during Monday’s Raw attack was not scripted and reportedly caught people backstage by surprise. WrestleVotes reported through Fightful Select that several people noticed the moment and that some were unhappy with Femi’s reaction.
The moment worked perfectly for Oba’s character because The Ruler refusing to allow somebody to pose over him feels completely believable.
Professional wrestling requires enough trust that wrestlers can finish a segment exactly as planned, particularly when somebody is physically standing on or around another performer. Even a reaction that looks great on television can create frustration if the person doing it changes the planned choreography without warning.
This probably becomes much less interesting if everybody involved moves on. It becomes considerably more interesting if WWE incorporates that tension into the Femi-Reed story.
WWE Fans Get a Say in WWE 2K27
Club WWE members will vote on a Superstar who will appear on one of the covers of WWE 2K27. The ballot includes Bron Breakker, Fatal Influence, Je’Von Evans, Oba Femi, Penta, Sol Ruca, Stephanie Vaquer and Trick Williams, with voting beginning September 11.
The candidate list is more interesting than the vote itself.
WWE could have filled the ballot with Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes and the other established faces who already dominate company branding. Instead, nearly every name represents somebody WWE appears to view as part of its next generation.
That makes this as much a marketing experiment as a cover vote. WWE gets an inexpensive piece of information about which emerging performers generate enough enthusiasm for people to actively support them.
Omos Says His AAA Run Has Been “Nothing Short of Amazing”
Omos said his experience working in AAA has been “nothing short of amazing” ahead of tonight’s TripleManía match with Rey Mysterio. Omos has become heavily involved in AAA programming this year, aligning with Dominik Mysterio and Dorian Roldán while increasingly functioning as a major attraction within the promotion.
His size immediately makes him feel unusual in any environment, but lucha libre gives that size an even stronger visual contrast. Instead of simply being another giant on WWE television, Omos becomes a touring attraction whose opponents have to solve a physical problem completely different from what they normally encounter.
The arrangement also gives Omos meaningful repetitions without forcing WWE to find television time for him every week.
His comments suggest he understands the opportunity. AAA has given him something more valuable than occasional appearances: a role.
TripleManía 34 Begins Tonight in Las Vegas
AAA begins the first two-night TripleManía in company history tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas before concluding Sunday at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. Night 1 is headlined by Rey Mysterio against Omos, with Omos required to leave AAA permanently if he loses.
- Rey Mysterio vs. Omos – Omos must win to be reinstated in AAA
- AAA Latin American Championship – La Parka (c) vs. Mr. Iguana vs. Laredo Kid
- AAA World Trios Championship – Los Psycho Circus (c) vs. Los Perros del Mal
- AAA Reina de Reinas Championship No. 1 Contender – Nattie vs. Faby Apache vs. La Hiedra vs. Roxanne Perez
- Fraxiom vs. Los Americanos vs. Tokyo Bad Boys vs. The LWO – Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Elimination Match
- Mascarita Sagrada, Mini Vikingo & Adelicious vs. Jack Cartwheel, Mini Abismo Negro & Lady Shani
The expansion from one TripleManía into two nights in two countries tells us more about WWE’s ambitions for AAA than almost anything else that has happened since the partnership deepened.
AAA’s biggest show is no longer being presented exclusively as a Mexican wrestling event. WWE is testing whether it can become a broader international property while still keeping the lucha identity that made TripleManía valuable in the first place.
Friday Is Essentially One Long WWE-AAA Event
The schedule creates an unusual night. SmackDown begins from Mexico City at 8 p.m. ET, while TripleManía Night 1 begins in Las Vegas at 10 p.m. ET. WWE and AAA have effectively built a continuous block of wrestling across two countries.
That is a much bigger statement about the partnership than simply putting AAA wrestlers on WWE programming.
Rey Fenix and the War Raiders defend AAA championships on SmackDown before TripleManía even begins. Hours later, WWE names including Rey Mysterio, Nattie and Roxanne Perez are part of AAA’s biggest annual event.
The lines between the companies continue getting thinner.
Friday may be the clearest example yet of what WWE actually wants this relationship to become.
