La Catalina appears on NXT, Mason Rook earns a title shot, Jeff Cobb talks WWE fans and WWE reportedly sees major upside in Penta.

AAA’s newest women’s champion wasted very little time crossing another promotional line.

La Catalina appeared on NXT Tuesday night only two days after winning the Reina de Reinas Championship at TripleManía 34, confronting Kelani Jordan before Zaria and Thea Hail joined the chaos. NXT also crowned Mason Rook as Grayson Waller’s next challenger, brought back the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and gave Myles Borne another violent turn.

Outside NXT, Jeff Cobb opened up about what he learned from WWE’s fanbase and the reception he received upon returning to New Japan, while a new report suggests WWE officials came away from Mexico City seeing Penta as a significant long-term investment.

It’s the Chairshot Wrestling News Report for September 16, 2026!

La Catalina Makes a Surprise NXT Appearance

New AAA Reina de Reinas Champion La Catalina made an unexpected appearance on NXT Tuesday, interrupting NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan after Jordan questioned whether anyone on the roster was willing to challenge her. Catalina pointed out that Jordan was not the only champion making history before Zaria and Thea Hail joined the confrontation, leading to a four-woman brawl that ended with Catalina and Hail standing tall.

The timing makes the appearance much more important than a random crossover. Catalina ended Flammer’s 1,128-day reign at TripleManía on Sunday and was already scheduled to defend against Roxanne Perez at Worlds Collide, so placing her immediately onto NXT television signals WWE and AAA see value in keeping her visible between major events.

NXT followed up by booking Catalina and Hail against Jordan and Zaria for next week. That gives Catalina something meaningful to do in WWE without immediately creating another champion-versus-champion match and keeps several women’s stories moving at once.

NXT Results — September 15, 2026

Tuesday’s NXT also produced a new No. 1 contender for Grayson Waller, another betrayal from Myles Borne and the return announcement for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Mason Rook won the main event Triple Threat after Tristan Angels prevented Saquon Shugars from securing the victory, allowing Rook to eventually pin Tony D’Angelo.

  • Kali Armstrong defeated Lizzy Rain
  • Cutler James & Osiris Griffin defeated Sean Legacy & Dorian Van Dux
  • Brad Baylor & Ricky Smokes defeated Cruz Montana & EK Prosper
  • NXT Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match – Mason Rook defeated Tony D’Angelo and Saquon Shugars

The bigger story underneath the match results may have been Borne’s supposed apology to Tavion Heights. Borne convinced Heights to forgive him, hugged his former partner and then immediately attacked him again, eventually stomping a chair wrapped around Heights’ ankle.

NXT also announced that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will return next Tuesday after a two-year absence. The tournament will feature 14 teams drawn from NXT, Evolve, AAA, Raw and SmackDown, which gives WWE another useful way to make the broader developmental ecosystem feel connected.

Jeff Cobb Says WWE Changed How He Looks at Fans

Jeff Cobb told NJPW in a new interview that his year in WWE changed the way he thinks about interactions with wrestling fans. Cobb said WWE fans would sometimes wait at airports at extremely early or late hours because they knew when wrestlers’ flights were arriving, and while he admitted those situations could be frustrating, the experience ultimately made him appreciate the effort fans make to connect with performers.

Cobb also admitted he was unsure how New Japan fans would respond when he returned after roughly a year and a half away. Instead of resentment, he said the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with fans thanking him for returning and helping reinforce his connection to NJPW.

That makes his return feel less like simply going back to a former employer and more like somebody rediscovering what he valued about that environment. Cobb said he now intends to fight both for himself and for the New Japan fans who welcomed him back, which gives his current run a different emotional foundation than his previous one.

WWE Reportedly Sees Penta as a Long-Term Money Maker

WWE officials reportedly came away from Monday’s Raw in Mexico City extremely impressed with Penta’s performance against Roman Reigns. Lucha Libre Online reported, via NoDQ, that executives backstage viewed Penta differently after seeing him work a world-title main event with an entire arena strongly behind him and now see him as a potential long-term money maker for the company.

The report also states there is internal belief that Penta could eventually become a world champion on WWE’s main roster. That does not mean a title win is imminent, but the distinction matters because Monday was not simply treated as a successful hometown-style showcase.

Penta already had merchandising strength, recognizability and a character that translated almost immediately to WWE television. A strong main event against Reigns gives WWE evidence that those qualities can survive higher on the card.

Roman Reigns vs. LA Knight Is Official for Money in the Bank

WWE has officially announced Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against LA Knight at Money in the Bank on October 10 in New Orleans. The match was made after Knight attacked Reigns following Raw in Mexico City, escalating an issue that continued after Reigns had already survived Penta.

That gives WWE its first announced championship match for Money in the Bank and provides Reigns with another challenger who already has established audience support. Unlike Penta, Knight does not need the match itself to prove he belongs at that level because WWE audiences have been waiting for him to receive another major opportunity.

The challenge now is giving the feud enough substance between Mexico City and New Orleans. A post-show attack is enough to start the match, but the next several weeks need to establish why Knight believes he can succeed where Penta failed.

AEW All Out Is Reportedly Sold Out

AEW’s All Out pay-per-view on September 26 is sold out according to WrestleTix, giving the company another strong live-event result following All In. The card is being built around Will Ospreay defending the AEW World Championship against Jon Moxley, with several other programs continuing to develop across Dynamite and Collision.

Selling out All Out matters because AEW is trying to sustain momentum rather than relying on one massive event. All In established the new championship landscape, but the next pay-per-view has to demonstrate people are interested in following those stories forward.

Ospreay and Moxley already provide a strong centerpiece. The larger question is whether the rest of the card can make All Out feel like its own major destination instead of simply the next show after All In.

Allstate Arena May Have Spoiled Several Worlds Collide Matches

The Allstate Arena is advertising several possible WWE x AAA Worlds Collide matches for September 26 that WWE has not yet officially announced.

The listings include:

  • CM Punk, Rey Mysterio & El Grande Americano vs. Omos, JD McDonagh & Dominik Mysterio
  • Penta & Rey Fenix (The Lucha Bros) vs. Perros del Mal
  • Las Tóxicas vs. Fatal Influence
  • Dragon Lee vs. Jack Cartwheel
  • AAA Reina de Reinas Championship – La Catalina (c) vs. Roxanne Perez

Catalina vs. Perez remains the only match officially announced for the event so far. CM Punk has been confirmed for Worlds Collide, which gives the advertised six-man tag some additional credibility, but the arena listings should still be treated as potential spoilers until WWE or AAA formally confirms them.

If the listings are accurate, the card would continue several stories that came directly out of TripleManía. Dominik, Omos and El Grande Americano would remain connected after the AAA Mega Championship change, while Penta and Rey Fenix teaming together against Perros del Mal gives WWE another obvious way to spotlight its lucha stars in Chicago.

It also makes the September 26 wrestling landscape even more interesting. Worlds Collide is running the same night in the Chicago area as AEW All Out, which has already sold out, so WWE and AAA appear to be assembling a card designed to feel much larger than a developmental crossover show.

AEW Dynamite Continues the Road to All Out Tonight

AEW Dynamite airs tonight from Norfolk, Virginia, with Will Ospreay, Andrade El Idolo and Francesco Akira facing Jon Moxley, PAC and Gabe Kidd. Chris Jericho will also face Nick Wayne as their rivalry continues toward All Out.

  • Will Ospreay, Andrade El Idolo & Francesco Akira vs. Jon Moxley, PAC & Gabe Kidd
  • Chris Jericho vs. Nick Wayne
  • Jamie Hayter vs. Lena Kross

The six-man tag is doing several jobs at once because Ospreay and Moxley already have the world-title match waiting while Andrade and Gabe Kidd remain connected to separate issues around them. AEW has also announced Blood & Guts for November, so any continued friction between United Empire and the Death Riders is worth watching beyond All Out itself.

Tuesday’s wrestling cycle worked well because NXT provided the anchor without becoming the entire report. Catalina’s appearance, Rook’s title opportunity and the Dusty Classic created immediate television consequences, while the Cobb and Penta stories widened the scope beyond one show.

That balance is useful going forward. NXT can own the top of Wednesday’s report when the show produces meaningful developments, while the remaining space continues tracking the larger wrestling world instead of becoming a two-hour recap in article form.
