Away from WWE television, reporting around Ilja Dragunov’s future has strengthened considerably, with multiple outlets now indicating the former WWE star has signed with AEW and preparations for his debut are underway.

CM Punk Drops Sami Zayn After His First Title Defense

Sami Zayn defeated Kevin Owens to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship in Friday’s SmackDown main event, but the match became increasingly chaotic as Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae and CM Punk became involved. Punk ultimately struck Owens with the WWE Championship before delivering Go To Sleep to both Owens and Zayn after the match.

That immediately establishes that Zayn’s second championship reign will not be defined by the justice narrative he used while chasing Punk. Sami now has the belt, but Punk has not accepted the way he lost it, Owens already received a championship match and Gargano still believes Zayn owes him an opportunity.

The crowded championship picture may actually help Sami because WWE does not need to manufacture one obvious challenger immediately. There are already several people with legitimate grievances, and Friday made it clear that possessing the championship has not given Zayn the authority he expected.

WWE SmackDown Results — September 18, 2026

Friday’s SmackDown produced Sami Zayn’s first successful championship defense and added two more wrestlers to the Money in the Bank Ladder Matches. Trick Williams and Jacy Jayne both advanced by taking advantage of opportunities created by somebody else’s offense.

SmackDown also kept several stories interconnected without forcing another title change. Sami retained, Punk remained dangerous, Owens has a legitimate complaint and Gargano is still waiting for the championship match he believes he was promised.

Ilja Dragunov Reportedly Signs With AEW

Ilja Dragunov has reportedly signed with All Elite Wrestling following his departure from WWE. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that promotional materials for Dragunov’s arrival are already being prepared while visa-related details are being finalized, and Fightful has also reported throughout the week that Dragunov is AEW-bound.

That moves the story considerably beyond the earlier expectation that Dragunov would eventually sign. There is still no announced debut date, but preparing promotional materials suggests AEW is planning for his arrival rather than simply negotiating about the possibility.

Dragunov also fits AEW unusually well from an in-ring standpoint. The roster is crowded, but his physical intensity gives him immediate potential opponents ranging from Will Ospreay and Jon Moxley to Konosuke Takeshita, Kyle Fletcher, Gabe Kidd and Kazuchika Okada.

AEW does not need another wrestler simply to fill television. Dragunov is somebody worth creating television time for.

Trick Williams Steals His Way Into Money in the Bank

United States Champion Trick Williams qualified for Money in the Bank by defeating Randy Orton and Rey Fenix after allowing Orton to hit Fenix with an RKO and then stealing the pin. Trick later teased the possibility of adding another championship to the one he already carries.

That finish fits Trick better than simply having him dominate two highly established opponents. He leaves with the accomplishment while Orton and Fenix both retain reasons to argue that the result did not establish Trick as definitively better than either man.

Money in the Bank is also an interesting environment for Trick because his personality may benefit as much as his wrestling. The briefcase gives somebody permission to become an ongoing nuisance, and Trick hardly needs encouragement in that department.

Jacy Jayne Joins the Women’s Money in the Bank Match

Jacy Jayne qualified by defeating Jade Cargill and Alexa Bliss, stealing the pin on Bliss immediately after Cargill appeared positioned to win. The Women’s United States Champion now joins Sol Ruca and Lola Vice in the developing Ladder Match field.

The first three qualifiers create a noticeably different Money in the Bank lineup from the usual collection of former world champions. WWE appears willing to use the match as an actual opportunity to elevate somebody rather than simply giving established stars another premium live event appearance.

Jacy carrying one championship into a match that could potentially give her access to another one also provides an easy character motivation. She already believes she belongs at the top of the division, and the briefcase would give her the power to prove it whenever she chooses.

Flip Gordon Re-Enlists in the Army National Guard

Former ROH and current CMLL wrestler Flip Gordon revealed that he has re-enlisted in the Army National Guard, returning to military service after previously leaving to focus on professional wrestling. Gordon emphasized that the decision does not mean his wrestling career is over and said he intends to return to CMLL after completing the transition into this next phase of his military career.

Gordon explained that wrestling took him around the world over the last 11 years but that military goals remained unfinished after he initially chose wrestling when his career began gaining momentum. His family recently returned to the United States after his wife received her green card, creating an opportunity for Gordon to revisit that part of his life.

The update also explains his recent absence from CMLL, where Gordon had become a regular presence and recently completed a nearly 600-day reign as CMLL World Historic Middleweight Champion.

Cody Rhodes Says Betrayal Is Changing Him

Cody Rhodes used Friday’s sit-down interview with Michael Cole to address Randy Orton’s actions and the growing number of people around him who have turned against him. Cody acknowledged that those betrayals are beginning to change the way he approaches relationships and competition.

That gives the Orton story more useful material than simply arranging another match between two major names. Cody’s WWE character has been built heavily around trust, gratitude and emotional connections, which gives repeated betrayals a logical reason to change his behavior.

The interesting part will be how far WWE actually takes that evolution. Cody becoming slightly less trusting is meaningful; completely abandoning the qualities that made audiences connect with him would be something else entirely.

Darby Allin Defends the TNT Championship Tonight

AEW Collision tonight will feature two championship matches one week before All Out. Darby Allin will defend the TNT Championship against Myron Reed after Reed signed Darby’s open contract, while Andrade El Idolo puts the AEW National Championship on the line against Daniel Garcia.

The larger intrigue now hangs over Ilja Dragunov. AEW has not announced when he will appear, but once promotional preparation begins, every major television show becomes a plausible landing spot.
