New reporting indicates Sami Zayn’s defense against Kevin Owens was supposed to end on the initial CM Punk-assisted pin attempt, only for the referee to continue the match after an apparent timing error. WWE now moves into Raw with another pair of Money in the Bank qualifiers, including AAA Reina de Reinas Champion La Catalina against Roxanne Perez and Iyo Sky.

Sami Zayn-Kevin Owens Finish Reportedly Went Off Script

The controversial finish to Friday’s Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens WWE Championship match was reportedly caused by a referee mistake rather than Owens failing to kick out as some viewers initially assumed. Fightful Select reported, via Cageside Seats, that the match was intended to end when CM Punk struck Owens with the championship and Sami covered him, but the referee did not call for the bell after counting three, forcing Zayn and Owens to continue improvising until another finish could be reached.

That explanation makes the strange final minutes considerably easier to understand. Owens appeared to lose on the first cover, but the match continued long enough to create confusion about whether the kickout had happened late or whether television had simply caught something WWE never intended viewers to question.

The more impressive part is how smoothly Zayn and Owens recovered. Live television gives performers very little room to stop and reset when something goes wrong, and both men were able to keep the match moving long enough to arrive at another usable conclusion without completely exposing the mistake.

La Catalina Steps Into a Money in the Bank Qualifier

AAA Reina de Reinas Champion La Catalina will compete on Raw tonight against Roxanne Perez and Iyo Sky in a Women’s Money in the Bank qualifier. The match continues Catalina’s WWE crossover after her NXT appearance last week and places her against the woman already scheduled to challenge her for the AAA championship at Worlds Collide.

That makes the qualifier useful beyond simply filling another ladder-match slot. Catalina and Roxanne already have a championship issue waiting for them, so every interaction on Raw can advance Worlds Collide even if neither woman ultimately qualifies.

Iyo also prevents the match from becoming too narrowly focused on AAA. She gives WWE an established main-roster name who can win without disrupting the Catalina-Perez story or lose without weakening either side of it.

Dominik, Dragon Lee and Solo Fight for MITB

The men’s qualifier on Raw will feature Dominik Mysterio, Dragon Lee and Solo Sikoa. Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams have already qualified for the men’s Ladder Match, leaving the second half of the field still to be determined.

Dominik enters with the most complicated recent history after losing the AAA Mega Championship to El Grande Americano at TripleManía, while Dragon Lee continues trying to convert strong performances into something larger. Solo brings the clearest physical contrast and gives the Triple Threat somebody capable of changing the match simply through size and power.

The current Money in the Bank fields have been noticeably younger than usual. WWE appears to be using the qualifiers to create opportunities rather than filling the matches exclusively with former world champions.

LA Knight Speaks Before Roman Reigns

LA Knight is scheduled to address the audience tonight after attacking Roman Reigns following last week’s Raw in Mexico City. WWE has already made Knight vs. Reigns official for the World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank on October 10.

Knight does not need another tournament or No. 1 contender match to establish why he belongs opposite Roman. The audience relationship is already there, and the BFT after Reigns survived Penta gave the champion a direct reason to take him seriously.

What Raw needs now is substance beyond the attack. The next several weeks have to explain why Knight believes this opportunity will end differently from the previous major title chances that slipped away.

Penta Remains a Major Raw Focus

WWE continues prominently featuring Penta following his World Heavyweight Championship loss to Roman Reigns in Mexico City. Raw General Manager Adam Pearce highlighted Penta again while previewing tonight’s show, keeping him visible after the performance that reportedly elevated his standing internally.

That is the correct follow-up if WWE genuinely came away from Mexico City viewing Penta as a long-term top-level attraction. Losing one world-title match does not matter if the company continues treating him like somebody who belongs close to that championship tier.

The next program becomes important because momentum can disappear quickly when a major showcase is followed by weeks of directionless television. WWE has already done the difficult part by establishing that Penta can work in a major-event environment.

NJPW Loads Destruction in Kobe

New Japan Pro-Wrestling confirmed the complete card for Destruction in Kobe on September 27. Yota Tsuji will defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Hirooki Goto, Gabe Kidd defends the Global Heavyweight Championship against former War Dogs partner Drilla Moloney and Konosuke Takeshita puts the NJPW World Television Championship on the line against Shun Skywalker.

The card also includes Jeff Cobb against Callum Newman and Shingo Takagi against Claudio Castagnoli, giving the event several matches built around personal issues rather than championships alone. Cobb’s match is particularly useful after his recent interviews explaining his WWE departure and the reception he received upon returning to Japan.

Destruction now looks much more substantial than a bridge show between larger NJPW events. Tsuji-Goto gives the card a legitimate championship main event, while the supporting matches draw from NJPW, AEW and several ongoing faction stories without overwhelming the company’s own roster.

All Out Adds Andrade-PAC and More

AEW continued expanding the September 26 All Out lineup after Collision. Andrade El Idolo will defend the National Championship against PAC, while the Tailgate Brawl will feature Jay White, Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn and Ace Austin against Wheeler Yuta, Daniel Garcia, David Finlay and Clark Connors, along with Jack Perry facing Katsuyori Shibata.

Andrade-PAC has enough history to work without a long build, while the pre-show additions give several faction stories somewhere meaningful to land. AEW also avoids forcing every active rivalry onto the primary pay-per-view card simply because All Out is approaching.

The entire weekend is increasingly crowded with All Out and WWE x AAA Worlds Collide both occupying the Chicago market. That puts pressure on both companies to make every announced match feel purposeful rather than simply increasing volume.

Raw Preview — September 21, 2026

Monday Night Raw airs tonight from San Antonio with Money in the Bank qualifying, LA Knight addressing Roman Reigns and Bayley again facing Lyra Valkyria. WWE is also continuing to spotlight Penta after his Mexico City performance.

Friday’s strange championship finish also guarantees that Sami Zayn’s story will remain part of the broader conversation even on a Raw-centered Monday. WWE escaped the production mistake without damaging the result, but the crowded title picture around Sami continues growing more complicated.
