Chairshot Wrestling News Report (9/5/2026): Punk Wants Sami, WWE Makes Cuts & Kyoki Wins His Debut
CM Punk challenges Sami Zayn, WWE releases several developmental talents and Kyoki wins his SmackDown debut alongside Shinsuke Nakamura.
CM Punk challenges Sami Zayn, WWE releases several developmental talents and Kyoki wins his SmackDown debut alongside Shinsuke Nakamura.
Sami Zayn spent another Friday night creating problems, but this time CM Punk decided he had seen enough.
Punk survived Johnny Gargano’s hometown championship challenge before calling out Zayn for Mexico City, Kyoki won his SmackDown debut alongside Shinsuke Nakamura and WWE made a significant round of developmental roster cuts after the show.
It’s the Chairshot Wrestling News Report for September 5, 2026!
CM Punk Challenges Sami Zayn for Mexico City
CM Punk retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against Johnny Gargano on SmackDown despite interference involving Sami Zayn, Candice LeRae, Kevin Owens, Gunther and Finn Bálor. After Punk finally defeated Gargano with the Go to Sleep, the champion challenged Zayn to face him for the title next week when SmackDown heads to Mexico City.
Zayn has gone from disrupting the No. 1 contender picture to potentially becoming the contender himself, although not through any conventional route. His actions have now affected Punk, Owens, Gunther and Bálor, giving WWE several directions to take once the Mexico City title match is resolved.
Punk making the challenge himself is the right escalation. Zayn has spent two weeks forcing his way into the championship story, and the champion finally decided the easiest way to deal with him is to put the title on the line and make him answer inside the ring.
WWE Releases Jasper Troy, Wendy Choo and Several Developmental Talents
WWE parted ways with a group of wrestlers and developmental talent Friday, including Jasper Troy, Wendy Choo, Adriana Rizzo, Zena Sterling, PJ Vasa, Anya Rune and Braxton Cole. Referee Gary Wilson and recruits Ellen Akesson and Marcus Brown also departed the company.
Troy is the most surprising name because he won the first season of WWE LFG and had already held the WWE Speed Championship. Choo had been with WWE since 2019 and had worked through several different character presentations across NXT and EVOLVE.
Developmental systems inevitably involve turnover, especially with WWE now feeding talent through NXT, EVOLVE, LFG and the ID program simultaneously. Still, removing several wrestlers who had already received television exposure shows how aggressively WWE is evaluating that pipeline.
Kyoki Wins His SmackDown Debut
Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki defeated The Miz and Kit Wilson in their first match together on SmackDown. Kyoki, formerly Hiromu Takahashi, scored the pinfall with a Reverse Stunner after several weeks of Nakamura introducing his new partner to WWE audiences.
The presentation has moved quickly from mystery to establishing Kyoki as somebody capable of contributing immediately. Pairing him with Nakamura also removes the need for WWE to explain everything about the character at once.
The more interesting question is how far WWE intends to take the team. Nakamura and Kyoki have already stated their interest in the tag-team division, and a convincing first victory gives WWE an easy path toward moving them quickly into contention.
Chelsea Green Cleared, Gets Nia Jax in Mexico City
Interim WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green was medically cleared to compete while continuing to wear a protective mask for her healing orbital fracture. Nick Aldis subsequently announced Green will defend against Nia Jax next week in Mexico City after Jax defeated Tiffany Stratton and later ripped Green’s protective mask from her face.
Green returning to active competition allows WWE to stop treating the championship situation as something being held in place while she recovers. Putting Jax across from her immediately also gives the injury protection a natural role in the match without needing to manufacture another vulnerability.
Mexico City now has two significant championship matches established between Punk and Zayn and Green and Jax, giving SmackDown’s international episode more substance than simply moving the normal television format into a different building.
Ospreay and Moxley Are Headed for All Out
AEW established Jon Moxley as Will Ospreay’s first major pay-per-view challenger following Ospreay’s AEW World Championship victory at All In. Wednesday’s Dynamite also saw Swerve Strickland and The New Level successfully defend the AEW World Trios Championship, while Thekla interrupted Mercedes Moné’s championship celebration.
All In changed AEW’s championship landscape, but All Out now has to determine what those changes actually produce. Putting Moxley opposite Ospreay gives the new champion an opponent who immediately changes the tone of his title reign.
Ospreay defeating Kenny Omega established him as the centerpiece. Surviving Moxley would start defining what kind of champion he intends to become.
Zoey Serrano Says NXT Didn’t Prepare Her for WWE’s Main Roster
Zoey Serrano said during an appearance on Busted Open Radio that she does not believe NXT fully prepares wrestlers for WWE’s main roster. Serrano explained that NXT offered extensive guidance from coaches and producers on matches and promos, while the main roster required wrestlers to adjust much more independently and described the transition as essentially learning to “sink or swim.”
Serrano’s perspective is especially interesting because she experienced both systems before leaving WWE and joining TNA. NXT is designed to prepare talent for WWE television, but preparation and replication are two different things.
The comment also helps explain why wrestlers who appear completely comfortable in NXT sometimes need another adjustment period after being called up. The main roster brings different expectations, less rehearsal and considerably more responsibility for making ideas work in real time.
That is the type of insight worth pulling from interviews because it adds something beyond promoting an upcoming match or repeating storyline talking points.
Giulia and Blake Monroe Still Haven’t Had Their Match
Giulia and Blake Monroe once again failed to make it to their scheduled SmackDown match after Giulia attacked Monroe during a backstage interview. Their brawl ended with Giulia landing the Arrivederci Knee directly to Monroe’s jaw before officials separated them.
Twice delaying the actual match can work when the confrontation feels increasingly personal rather than simply postponed. WWE has effectively used the cancellations to establish that neither woman is interested in waiting for a referee and a bell.
Eventually the match has to happen, but delaying it another week gives WWE the opportunity to attach a stipulation or higher stakes that match the level of hostility they have established.
WWE SmackDown Results — September 4, 2026
Friday’s SmackDown moved several championship stories forward while putting Kyoki into the ring for the first time on WWE television.
- Charlotte Flair & Tatum Paxley defeated Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid
- Nia Jax defeated Tiffany Stratton
- Bakusai defeated The Miz & Kit Wilson
- Undisputed WWE Championship – CM Punk (c) defeated Johnny Gargano
SmackDown accomplished considerably more than simply preparing for Sunday Night’s Main Event. Punk and Sami now have a destination, Chelsea Green is cleared to defend her championship and Kyoki has moved from an intriguing character introduction into an actual part of WWE’s tag-team division.
The developmental releases also provide a reminder that WWE’s expanding talent pipeline creates pressure at the other end. More recruits, more programs and more avenues into the company inevitably mean more frequent decisions about who remains part of the system.
That combination makes September interesting. WWE is simultaneously adding new faces to major television, deciding which developing wrestlers remain in the organization and moving established names into an increasingly crowded championship picture.
